Tabitha Nazir Gill, a 32-year-old Christian nurse, has shared her relief and joy after narrowly escaping perilous danger in Pakistan over blasphemy charges and starting a new life in North America.

Ms Gill gained international attention in 2021 when a video of her being violently attacked by her colleagues went viral.

The incident unfolded when Ms Gill witnessed a woman accepting a bribe from a patient at the Sobhraj Maternity Hospital and reported it. In response, the accused individual invoked blasphemy as the reason behind Ms Gill’s allegations, a charge that carries the death penalty under Section 295C of the Pakistan Penal Code.

As tensions escalated, a mob of colleagues attacked Ms Gill, putting her life in grave danger. However, she credits her faith for her survival. Recalling the harrowing experience, she said, “The mob wanted to kill me, but I kept praying to Jesus, and I opened my eyes and I felt I saw angels, and from that moment, I knew that I would be saved.”

Expressing her gratitude, Ms Gill stated, “I am thankful to Jesus Christ, my Lord and my God, for giving me my freedom. Jesus is mighty to save.” She has now been relocated to a undisclosed location in North America, where she and her husband, Sohail Almas, along with their two sons, have been granted immigrant visas.

Mr Almas expressed his family’s deep gratitude, saying, “We are so thankful to be where we are now. We know we will never be able to go back to Pakistan.” Due to security concerns, the specific country where they now reside cannot be disclosed.

Taking the opportunity to show solidarity with her fellow Christian nurses in Pakistan, Mariam Lal and Newosh Arooj, who are currently in hiding after facing blasphemy charges, Ms Gill conveyed a heartfelt message. She said, “I want them to know that we are praying for them and that we stand with them. I will work for persecuted Christians until I take my last breath.”

Blasphemy accusations in Pakistan have often been misused to target religious minorities and settle personal disputes. Such cases can lead to mob violence and vigilante justice, putting innocent lives at risk. Ms Gill’s escape from this precarious situation and her new life in North America provide hope for those facing similar persecution.

Her story highlights the importance of international efforts to protect and support individuals facing blasphemy charges unjustly. Organizations advocating for religious freedom and human rights continue to raise awareness and work toward a world where individuals can practice their faith without fear of persecution.

As Tabitha Nazir Gill embarks on her new journey, she remains steadfast in her commitment to standing up for persecuted Christians and promoting justice for all. Her bravery and resilience serve as an inspiration to many, reminding us of the importance of safeguarding religious freedom and fighting against injustice.
