In a recent address to its congregation, the International House of Prayer (IHOPKC) disclosed that certain instances of misconduct in the past were “likely not handled properly.”
The organization, renowned for its round-the-clock prayer services, has vowed to institute comprehensive reforms in its policies and structures.
Speaking on Sunday, IHOPKC spokesperson Eric Volz shared that a review of past misconduct reports revealed that “a few” cases were “likely mishandled,” most of which occurred “under the watch of leaders who are no longer here.”
This announcement comes in the wake of the resignation of IHOPKC leaders Stuart Greaves and David Sliker. Clarifying the matter, IHOPKC leaders have asserted that the acknowledgment of mishandling reports does not pertain to Greaves or Sliker. Notably, the movement’s founder, Mike Bickle, faced allegations of sexual misconduct last year from former IHOP leaders. Bickle has admitted to some “moral failures” but vehemently denied the more serious sexual allegations.
In December, IHOPKC severed all ties with Bickle after an independent investigation substantiated allegations of sexual misconduct against him.
During Sunday’s address, Volz stated that the Lathrop Group, an independent entity, would “independently and directly” release the findings of its report to the public. IHOPKC has committed to implementing “any and all policy changes, procedures, and cultural changes” necessary to prevent a recurrence of such issues.
Volz extended an invitation to alleged victims, urging them to contribute to the investigation, emphasizing IHOPKC’s dedication to uncovering the truth. The organization aims to foster transparency and accountability throughout the process.
IHOPKC’s decision to sever ties with Bickle after a thorough investigation underscores the organization’s commitment to addressing issues of misconduct seriously. The acknowledgment of past mishandlings is a crucial step towards accountability and transparency within the organization.
The departure of leaders Greaves and Sliker, though not linked to the acknowledged mishandling, raises questions about the internal dynamics of IHOPKC. However, the organization’s commitment to an independent review and its promise to implement necessary changes signal a proactive approach to reforming its structure.
In his address, Volz reassured the congregation that the Lathrop Group’s report would be released directly to the public, minimizing any concerns about potential biases or cover-ups. This move aligns with IHOPKC’s commitment to openness and rectification.
IHOPKC’s call for alleged victims to participate in the investigation is a crucial aspect of their commitment to justice. By actively seeking input from those who may have been affected, IHOPKC aims to ensure a thorough and unbiased examination of the reported incidents.
As IHOPKC navigates this challenging period, the congregation and the public will likely be closely watching the developments. The organization’s transparency in addressing past issues and its commitment to reforming policies and structures demonstrate a proactive stance toward creating a safer and more accountable environment within the church.
