The renowned filmmaker initially shared his intention to tackle a project about Christ after a meeting with Pope Francis last year, and he has now disclosed that the screenplay is complete with production on the horizon.

Speaking to the Los Angeles Times, Scorsese expressed his goal to make this exploration of Jesus more accessible and to shift away from the negative connotations associated with organized religion. The director aims to delve into the core teachings of Jesus, emphasizing a fresh perspective on these principles.

Unlike his recent lengthy films, Scorsese revealed that this project will be a concise 80 minutes. He stated, “Right now, ‘religion,’ you say that word and everyone is up in arms because it’s failed in some ways. But that doesn’t mean necessarily that the initial impulse was wrong. Let’s get back. Let’s just think about it. You may reject it. But it might make a difference in how you live your life – even in rejecting it. Don’t dismiss it offhand. That’s all I’m talking about.”

Scorsese drew parallels with his previous works, such as ‘Kundun,’ ‘The Last Temptation of Christ,’ and ‘Gangs of New York,’ expressing that these projects aimed to explore redemption, the human condition, and our ability to transform. The director touched on societal fears and cultural corruption due to a lack of grounding in morality and spirituality, differentiating spirituality from organized religion.

“It’s finding my own way in a… if you want to say the term ‘religious’ sense, but I hate to use that language because it’s misinterpreted often. But there’s a basic fundamental belief that I have – or I’m trying to have – and I’m using these films to find it,” Scorsese added.

In essence, the movie seeks to challenge preconceived notions surrounding religion and invites viewers to reflect on their beliefs and values. Scorsese’s approach aims to foster a dialogue about spirituality and morality, steering away from a rigid religious interpretation.

As anticipation builds for the filming of this distinctive project later in the year, movie enthusiasts and fans of Scorsese’s work can look forward to a thought-provoking exploration of Jesus’ teachings in a compact yet impactful cinematic experience.
