World leaders met at the United Nations in New York. Pope Francis and former President Bill Clinton joined in a virtual meeting organized by the Clinton Foundation. They discussed major global problems.
The meeting, called the Clinton Global Initiative (CGI), took place over two days, focusing on topics like climate change, the refugee crisis, and children’s well-being.
Al Gore, Bill Clinton’s former Vice President, talked about the environment, while Hillary Clinton, former Secretary of State and Bill’s wife, discussed children’s welfare. Other guests included U.S. Treasury Secretary Janet Yellen, Barbados Prime Minister Mia Mottley, and influential business leaders, actors like Orlando Bloom, Matt Damon, and Ashley Judd, and philanthropists.
The CGI returned after a six-year break. Its goal is to get commitments from these leaders to tackle significant global issues, such as climate change, healthcare, violence against women, and the Ukraine conflict. Pope Francis spoke to Bill Clinton via video. He talked about a problem he called ‘indifference’ and said the world is going through big changes. The Pope emphasized the need for everyone to take responsibility for the world’s problems and work together to solve them. He said, “We can’t overcome challenges alone. We must do it together as one human family.”
The Pope also spoke about how difficulties can bring out both the best and worst in us. He encouraged everyone to choose generosity and humility over selfishness and division. He emphasized the importance of unity and finding the path to peace.
Pope Francis used his speech to address the issue of migration, asking people to see the humanity in refugee children who need care and education.
