Pope Francis Baptizes Ukrainian Baby Zakhariy, Bringing Joy Amidst Crisis

Pope Francis performed a heartwarming baptism ceremony for a three-month-old Ukrainian baby, Zakhariy, in the chapel of his Casa Santa Marta residence on Monday afternoon, November 6.

This tender moment brought immense joy to the baby’s family, who have been facing tough times.

Zakhariy’s parents, Vitaly, 37 years old, and Vita, 35 years old, are from Kamianets-Podilskyi, a town in western Ukraine, far from the conflict zone created by Russia’s invasion last year. The couple is blessed with ten children, consisting of seven boys and three girls.

They follow the Neocatechumenal Way and have experienced God’s providence during numerous family difficulties, which were further exacerbated by the ongoing war. Vita expressed their enduring faith, saying, “We endure everything thanks to God, because God always takes care of our family. There is war in the country, and it is very difficult. Everyone is praying for this war to end soon, for all the prisoners to return home and for there to be no more killing.”

The baptism of their youngest child, Zakhariy, was a profound blessing. Vita shared her astonishment, saying, “The Baptism was a great gift for our family. I could never have even dreamed that we could be with the Holy Father and that he could baptize our son. But God is making such a wonderful story with us, which we still do not fully understand.”

The Latin rite bishop of Kamianets-Podilskyi, Bishop Leon Dubrawski, also attended the liturgy and accompanied the family to the Vatican. He emphasized the importance of passing down God’s love through generations within the family.

Pope Francis, known for his compassion and empathy, continues to draw the world’s attention to the ongoing struggles of the Ukrainian people. He has consistently expressed his solidarity with the “martyred Ukrainian people.”

The baptism of little Zakhariy serves as a source of renewed hope for this resilient family. Despite the hardships they’ve faced, they maintain their faith in a peaceful future. The war remains an indelible part of their lives, but they look forward to brighter days ahead.

In a world filled with complex challenges, this heartwarming event reminds us of the power of faith, family, and hope. In a time of conflict and uncertainty, the simple act of baptizing a child symbolizes the enduring strength of the human spirit.

WHAT DO YOU THINK?

- We have all sinned and deserve God's judgment. God, the Father, sent His only Son to satisfy that judgment for those who believe in Him. Jesus, the creator and eternal Son of God, who lived a sinless life, loves us so much that He died for our sins, taking the punishment that we deserve, was buried, and rose from the dead according to the Bible. If you truly believe and trust this in your heart, receiving Jesus alone as your Savior, declaring, "Jesus is Lord," you will be saved from judgment and spend eternity with God in heaven.

What is your response?

If you are not a Christian, and would like to become a Christian. Simply say - "LORD Jesus, thank you for forgiving me of my SINs, today I am deciding to follow you. Accept me into your family, in Jesus name I pray. Amen "
