How to lower your cholesterol and why it is important to do so.

Cheryl Lythgoe, Matron at Benenden Health, discusses the difference between good and bad cholesterol and shares her tips for reducing cholesterol levels.

Your body naturally produces cholesterol and it is also found in certain foods. While some is vital for healthy cell function, too much cholesterol in the blood can increase the risk of heart and circulatory disease, so it is important to be in the know when it comes to your own levels.

What is good and bad cholesterol?
Cholesterol teams up with proteins in the blood to carry it around the body. When the two are combined, these are called lipoproteins and there are two types: LDL (low-density lipoprotein), which is often known as ‘bad cholesterol’ because if you have more than you need it builds up on the artery walls. HDL (high-density lipoprotein) or ‘good cholesterol’, returns surplus cholesterol from the bloodstream to the liver, where it is removed.

Most people will benefit from lowering their total cholesterol levels as high levels can lead to hypertension (high blood pressure) which can cause strokes, heart attacks and narrowing of the arteries.

To read more about what a high blood pressure reading could mean for you, visit Benenden Health’s blood pressure tool .

How you can reduce your cholesterol levels:
• Eat a healthy balanced diet with a wide variety of fruit, vegetables, and lean meat, and which is low in fatty food (especially those containing saturated or trans fats).
• Eat plenty of wholegrain cereals as well as pulses. These are high in soluble fibre, which helps to lower ‘bad’ cholesterol.
• Get or remain active. The British Heart Foundation suggests 150 minutes of activity a week at a minimum, such as brisk walking or cycling. BHF says that being active can increase the level of ‘good cholesterol’ in your blood. It can also help lower your blood pressure and help you to maintain a healthy weight.
• Cut down on saturated fats and replace with monounsaturated and polyunsaturated fats. Monounsaturated are found in olive and rapeseed oils, avocados, nuts and seeds. Polyunsaturated fats are also found in nuts and seeds, as well as in corn oil and oily fish such as salmon and sardines.

What should your cholesterol level be?
Blood cholesterol is measured in units called millimoles per litre of blood, often shortened to mmol/L. According to the NHS, and as a general guide:
• Total cholesterol levels should be: 5mmol/L or less for healthy adults (4mmol/L or less for those at high risk).
• LDL levels should be 3mmol/L or less for healthy adults (2mmol/L or less for those at high risk).
• An ideal level of HDL is above 1mmol/L. A lower level of HDL can increase your risk of heart disease.
• Your ratio of total cholesterol to HDL is your total cholesterol level divided by your HDL level. Generally, this ratio should be below four, as a higher ratio increases your risk of heart disease.

Do your genes affect cholesterol levels?
Certain families are at greater risk of high cholesterol. It is best to speak to your doctor if a close relative developed heart disease before 55 if a man, or 65 for a woman.

Make sure you visit your GP when it is offered as your cholesterol levels will be assessed as part of this.

US Churches Steps Up to Pray for Abused Children

Churches across America will be praying on the last Sunday of April which is Blue Sunday.  On this day they will remember the millions of children who need prayers and support. What will your church do?

Who: The Faith Community

What: A Day to pray for the millions of victims of child abuse and for those who rescue them.

Where: Churches across our nation

When: Sunday, April 24, 2022

Why:  April is Child Abuse Prevention Month. It began when a report about abused and neglected children caught the attention of President Ronald Reagan in1983. Sadly, since that first Child Abuse Prevention Month, the number of abused victims has grown from half a million children to over six million new reports of abuse along with 1600 child abuse related deaths annually.

One is too many.

Faith Community we must face the facts:

  • One in four girls and one in six boys will be sexually abused before their 18th birthday.
  • Most child abuse incidents are drug and alcohol related.
  • Within one year of aging out of the foster care system, 66% of victims will be homeless, in jail or dead.
  • There are over 100,000 children waiting for adoption in the United States.

How to pray for abused children on Blue Sunday:

  1. Pray they will be rescued
  2. Pray they are placed with caring people
  3. Pray their minds and bodies can heal
  4. Pray they find hope
  5. Pray for those who rescue them

Let’s pray, educate ourselves, and volunteer until black and blue are just colors in a child’s crayon box.

Blue Sunday Child Abuse Prevention Initiative is dedicated to helping communities reach out to abused children and to support those who rescue them. We are a faith based 501c3 nonprofit organization.

Washington D.C. Temple is now open for Public Tours

The Open House and Temple Rededication

Those coming to the Washington D.C. Temple open house should understand that Latter-day Saints consider temples to be the most sacred space in the world. Ceremonies in each temple teach the purpose of life and unite families, past and present. The mere presence of temples in communities around the globe reminds Latter-day Saints of the importance of having faith in the common Father of all humanity, the need for constant improvement of the soul, the possibility of family relationships that reach beyond the grave, and the salvation that comes only through the grace of Jesus Christ.

The Washington D.C. Temple open house will begin with private tours for invited guests from April 19 to April 27. A public open house will start on April 28 and extend for several months (excluding Sundays). Open house ticket information is available at dctemple.org.

A youth devotional will be held on August 13, followed by the temple rededication on August 14 in three sessions. The youth devotional and rededication will be broadcast for all congregations in the Washington D. C. Temple district.

What Was Renovated?

The temple first opened in 1974 and closed in March 2018 for a significant renovation. Energy-efficient mechanical, electrical and lighting systems throughout the 160,000-square-foot structure have been installed, as has new plumbing.

Dan Holt, project manager for the Washington D.C. Temple renovation project, said the intent was to “bring the building back to its original glory” as a midcentury modern structure. A gothic arch motif that directs eyes heavenward is prevalent throughout — in altars, carpeting, gold leafing and the reframed stained glass windows (now backlit with LED lights for more prominence) on the east and west of the temple. The windows’ colors become lighter as they near the spire. This design, Holt said, signifies the “brighter light we have and the knowledge we receive from the gospel as we learn and grow and ascend to be more like our Heavenly Father.”

The temple exterior is made of Alabama white marble, quarried in Sylacauga, Alabama. Soon after the building was completed in 1974, Alabama quarries stopped producing retail slab marble, making it impossible to find replacement marble of the same color should the Church ever need it as the temple aged. But in 2016, a marble quarry reopened, allowing the Church to purchase the stone that matches the temple’s exterior. This marble, Holt said, has a silver veining that turns gold over time as it oxidizes and is exposed to water and sunlight. Over time, the newly installed marble will assimilate with the rest of the original temple stone.

A Symbol of the Church’s Future

The Washington D.C. Temple was the Church’s first temple built east of the Mississippi River since the Nauvoo Temple more than a century earlier. Most major Church history sites — including Palmyra, Kirtland and Nauvoo — are within the original boundaries of the Washington D.C. Temple district.

The groundbreaking for the temple was held in 1968, and construction began in 1971. This house of the Lord was dedicated in 1974 by President Spencer W. Kimball and became the faith’s 16th operating temple.

The Washington D.C. Temple shares some features with the Church’s iconic Salt Lake Temple: six spires and a similar footprint. This was by design.

“It was intended to be that way, with the idea that the Salt Lake Temple represented the foundation of the Church, and the Washington, D.C. Temple represented the international future of the Church,” Holt said.

At the time of the temple’s dedication, the temple district included about 300,000 people living in the eastern United States, eastern Canada and the Caribbean. Church members in South America were also assigned to the temple. About 20,000 church members lived in the Washington, D.C., area. Many of these members were converts, reflecting Church growth in the 20th century. More than 750,000 people toured the temple during the open house in 1974, including many national government leaders.

As the temple opens its doors to the public a second time, Latter-day Saints hope visitors will sense its sacredness and encounter Christ-centered peace and hope.

“From the outside, everyone sees [the temple] on the [Capital] Beltway, and it’s bright at night and it’s beautiful. But it’s even more beautiful on the inside,” said David Oryang, a local Church leader in the Washington D.C. Temple district. “We invite everyone to come to the open house and feel the Spirit here.”

Evangelical leads March of the Living

Evangelical leader Mike Evans the founder of the Friends of Zion Heritage Center in Jerusalem was asked to join in leading the march of the Living with the Mayor of JerusalemMoshe Lion

The 2022 March of the Living is taking place on April 28, after a two-year hiatus due to the COVID-19 global pandemic. Evangelical leader Mike Evans was asked to join in leading the march with the Mayor of JerusalemMoshe Lion

Evans is the first Evangelical asked to lead the March of the Living. He has devoted his life to combating antisemitism, after he was strangled and left for dead by his father when he attempted to defend his Jewish mother from his abuse. Evans was nominated for a Nobel Peace Prize in January for his lifetime of work combating anti-Semitism.

Evans came to the March of the Living from Ukraine, where he had been helping Holocaust survivors get out of Ukraine and back to Israel. He said he received a phone call from Knesset Member Sharren Haskel asking him if he could get a Holocaust survivor family of seven out of the Russian-controlled town. Amazingly, Evans succeeded.

Viktor, the Director of Evans’ work in Ukraine, and also a refugee, has been feeding impoverished Holocaust survivors and Jewish orphans in Ukraine for over a decade. Evans said, “The only place Viktor could find a home to run our operation after the war began was Auschwitz, which makes leading The March of the Living even more meaningful.”

Evans rescued Last week a Holocaust survivor from Kharkiv by the name of Shelia. She arrived in Israel just before the March of the Living. Evans said that when he saw Sheila, she said to him, “I was born in war and I thought I would die at war. But I put my faith in God and you came for me.”

Evans has gone into Ukraine three times in the last five weeks with more than 60 tons of food, bringing it to the Jewish community and to churches. Evans’ son, Michael David Evans, just came out of Kharkiv, delivering food into that war zone and other cities in the east. His son will join him in the March of the Living.

“The Jewish community and Christians are going through unspeakable agony,” said Evans. “The relentless shelling lights up the sky as soldiers go house to house terrifying and even killing innocent civilians. Families live underground in the cold and filth, surviving on dried pasta and raw grains. Even venturing out to find water could mean death for many. When they go out into the streets they can see and smell death and view buildings on fire, knowing that a lot of their dear friends are dead.”

“We will go back in two more weeks and bring more Jewish Holocaust survivors out. Then we will go back two weeks later with another 40 to 60 tons of food, taking it into these bombed cities,” Evans said.

When asked why at 74 years of age that a number-one New York Times bestselling author with 108 published books is putting his life and his son’s life at risk, Evan said, “Our lives are not our own. The key to happiness is committing your life to a cause greater than yourself. I have such a cause.” He added, “God created me to combat anti-Semitism and to comfort his people. I’m only doing what I was created to do. And so it is with my son. The life of every Jewish person is just as precious in God’s eyes as my life and in my opinion, more precious are the children of the Holocaust. Love is not something you say. It’s something you do.”

“When I became conscious after my father strangled me and left me for dead and I had vomited all over myself at the age of 11, I shook my fist at God in anger and screamed in the dark, ‘Why was I born?’ I was angry because I was alive. In my mind, my mother was being abused because of me. My father would always call her a Jewish whore when he would beat her and say that I was not his son. He believed she had an affair with a Jewish man and my father never called me son, never said he loved me, and never affirmed me. He only abused me violently from the age of four.

“But when I asked why was I born, I knew the answer. I couldn’t defend one Jew against a Jew-hater. My life’s call was to defend all the Jews and that gave me great hope.

“I consider it an honor to be one of the leaders of the March of the Living and I proudly say ‘never again’ as I stand with the Jewish people, especially with the Jewish people of Ukraine in their time of need.”

American Pastor Concludes 40 Day Water-Only Fast for Ukraine

Dr. Pastor William Devlin, who traveled to Lviv and Kyiv Ukraine from March 12 to March 23, 2022, began a 40 Day Water-only Fast for Ukraine on his first day in Ukraine on Saturday March 12, 2022.

Devlin’s Fast, consisting only of water, commenced on March 12 and concluded on Wednesday, April 20, 2022 at midnight. Upon arriving in Lviv Ukraine, Devlin, who, along with being an urban pastor and international humanitarian, has an earned doctoral degree in Urban Emotional Trauma, was heartbroken after hearing of the suffering of the women and children of Ukraine. It was at that time he then decided to begin a 40 Day Water-only Fast as well as calling others to fast and pray for Ukraine.

Dr. Pastor William Devlin, volunteer CEO of www.WidowsAndOrphans.info and REDEEM! 501(c)3 non-profit: said “Upon crossing the border from Poland into Ukraine at 2am in the morning on March 12, 2022, I witnessed some 20 buses leaving Ukraine and crossing the border into Poland. As I peered from my commercial bus into the passing buses, each bus was filled with women and young children. I also witnessed young mothers walking into Poland from Ukraine, pushing strollers with young children and babies, along with dragging suitcases behind them. It was a truly heartbreaking moment. It was at that time that I decided to begin my 40 Day water-only Fast, calling upon God to help and have mercy upon these young Ukrainian mothers and their babies.

Over these past 40 days, I have also called upon God to cease the Russian invasion of Ukraine and called upon thousands of good people around the world to join me in this Fast. Fasting is a time-honored tradition within the Christian faith community, a discipline we as Followers of Jesus Messiah have learned from our Jewish sisters and brothers, like Queen Esther who called upon the expatriate Jewish community in Persia to Fast and Pray so that the Jewish community would not be extinguished. Many others from around the world joined me in portions of the Fast for which I am grateful. During my two weeks in Lviv and Kyiv, I witnessed the oppression of the Ukrainian people first-hand, sleeping in a bunker in Kyiv while ministering to the citizen soldiers of Territorial Defence Force, Legion D. We hope and pray for the cessation of conflict in Ukraine. May God have mercy.”

Devlin, for the past 10 years, beginning in 2012, goes on a 40- Day Water-Only Fast, calling out to God for a resolution to a particular conflict, be it gun violence, poverty or injustice.
