The Salvation Army to Host Virtual Estate and Charitable Gift Planning Institute

Press Release –  The Salvation Army USA Eastern Territory is once again hosting a free symposium for attorneys, financial planners, and other professional advisors. This year’s event will take place on Tuesday, May 17th, and will be virtual, so that participants can attend from a place of their convenience. The program scheduled from 9:00 am until 3:25 pm will offer continuing education credits, including CPE, CTFA, CFP, CLE, and CE for Insurance. Those interested can register by May 16th at TSALegacy.org/advisors.

“This is a great way to stay up-to-date on new tax laws impacting charitable donations,” said Michael Freeman, Director of Gift Planning for The Salvation Army in Cleveland, Ohio. “There have never been more tools and resources than there are now for individuals looking to maximize short and long-term plans for charitable contributions. With options like charitable remainder trusts, different types of gift annuities, trusts, donor-advised funds, and others, there are tremendous opportunities for folks to accomplish their legacy goals,” continued Freeman.

This year’s symposium will feature industry experts including:
• Jack N. Alpern, founder and shareholder in the Warren, Ohio law firm of Jack N. Alpern Co., L.P.A. Mr. Alpern has presented estate planning seminars on behalf of financial institutions for attorneys throughout Eastern Ohio. Most recently, he has served as an instructor for Chautauqua Institution in western New York, teaching a course entitled, “The Inheritance We Leave to Our Heirs…a Blessing or a Curse.”
• Steve Hartnett brings a broad range of educational and professional experiences to the Academy. Mr. Hartnett has practiced estate planning in a large law firm, managed a closely held business, and taught law in both academic and professional settings.
• Barry H. Zimmer, founder of the Zimmer Law Firm (est. June 1993), is a specialist in the areas of Estate Planning, Estate Administration, and Business Succession Planning. His goal was and continues to be to help clients understand and de-mystify the often-confusing world of Estate Planning in an ever-changing society and to implement effective Estate Planning with minimal effort and time investment.
• Heather J. Rhoades serves as Chairman of Cummings & Lockwood’s Private Clients Group and is Partner in Charge of the West Hartford office. She practices in the areas of estate planning, estate settlement, trust administration, and charitable planning. Heather is a member of the Firm’s National Charitable Planning Group.

“Not only will participants gain a deeper understanding of how to meet their clients’ philanthropic needs, but they will also be able to ask questions of our panelists, who are some of the nation’s top estate planning attorneys,” said Freeman.

Topics covered will include:
• Session I: “To Trust, or Not to Trust”

Groundbreaking Good Friday and Passover Interfaith Service

St. Michael’s Episcopal Church and the The Jewish Community of Kauai welcome innovative dialog, collaborative teaching and learning at Easter and Passover.

St. Michael’s Episcopal Church and the The Jewish Community of Kauai will bring together their communities for innovative dialog, collaborative teaching and learning at Easter and Passover. The public is invited to participate.

This is a milestone event emanating from a strong and enduring partnership between the Jewish Community of Kauai and St Michael’s over more than thirty years.

Rev. Andrew McMullen of St. Michael’s and Rabbi Rob Kvidt of the Jewish Community of Kauai are co-creating unique interfaith events for their communities that will culminate in a dual-community interfaith service on April 15, which is both Good Friday and the day on which Passover begins at sundown.

The workshop series will be an amalgamation of ideas and presentations from Rabbi Rob and Rev. Andrew. There will be time for community dialog and questions. There is no RSVP required, and the in-person workshops are open to everyone.

The April 15 service will be presented both in-person and broadcast on Zoom. Both the April 3 and 10 workshops are in-person only and offer time for community dialog and questions.

ZOOM LINK: https://us02web.zoom.us/j/85445569826

APRIL 3: ORIGINS OF THE PASSOVER SEDER AND LAST SUPPER

Are the Passover Seder and Last Supper in some way related to one another? If so, how? What might these faithful observances have to say to one another? How might they guide the Jewish, Christian and people of all faith traditions moving forward in our time and place? We will explore these questions, the underlying foundations of each and the common themes that they present, and invite open reflections and conversations during our time together.

APRIL 10: PASSOVER AND EASTER ARE CELEBRATIONS OF HOPE AND TRANSFORMATION

These are the two holidays in Judaism and Christianity that have the theological power to bring us together in a dynamic way. Our discussions and exchange of ideas may help us learn from each other as we all strive for the betterment of the world, which Jews refer to as Tikun Olum.

APRIL 15: GOOD FRIDAY AND PASSOVER INTERFAITH SERVICE

You won’t want to miss this groundbreaking event, either in-person or on Zoom, which will bring together both communities in unique trans-religious worship.

Michigan Mediator Launches Initiative to Help More Divorcing Families Find Peace Outside of Court

The Divorce Preacher, a private practice domestic relations service in Saginaw, MI, will host its first quarterly informational webinar for separated and divorcing individuals titled “So You Want to Get Divorced.” This 60-minute virtual event is designed to answer frequently asked questions about mediation and provide families with alternative options for divorce and coparenting issues outside of traditional litigation.

With at least ½ all of marriages in the U.S. ending in divorce, and courthouses across the country being bombarded with new petitions for family law disputes every day, The Divorce Preacher provides affordable consulting, coaching and non-court ordered mediation services for parties seeking professional assistance with divorce, custody, and child access.

The owner, Erinna McKissick, a 37-year-old leadership consultant and native of Saginaw, MI, decided in January 2022 to expand her entrepreneurial endeavors and open her own domestic relations private practice after completing the Michigan requirements for mediators and becoming certified through Citizens Mediation in St. Joseph, MI. McKissick holds a Bachelor of Arts degree in Communications from Howard University and a Master of Arts degree in Ministry Leadership from Cornerstone University.

McKissick, also an author and ordained reverend, has spent the last 20 years of her life providing pre- and post-marital counseling to couples, officiating weddings across the country, and helping save dozens of marriages from ending in divorce. However, the divorced mother of two also knows that there are times when divorce is unavoidable and the damaging effect that stressful court battles can have on a separating family.

“I absolutely believe that marriage is God’s divine design, but in certain circumstances divorce is a necessary evil. When that happens, helping families find peace during one of the most traumatic events of their lives is my specialty,” says McKissick.

Having divorced from an emotionally abusive marriage in 2015 and going through a devastating custody experience that resulted in her daughter threatening suicide at the age of 10, McKissick says that she lost faith in the court system and became determined to find a way to protect her children and to help make sure other families didn’t ever have to go through what she did. That’s when she discovered domestic relations mediation.

“No one cares about your family or what happens to it the way you do,” McKissick says. “I could have lost my daughter’s life because of how a family law judge mishandled my case. It’s unacceptable. I want people to know that they have other options and if they can agree to focus on the best interest of the children and moving forward in a healthy way, then they can find peace after divorce or separation.”

After years of other individuals in abusive marriages secretly reaching out to her on social media, sharing their similar nightmares and looking for her advice, McKissick says opening her private practice just made sense. In 2018 McKissick released her first best-selling book, “Leaving Egypt: From Trauma to Triumph”, which detailed the hardships she experienced during her Christian marriage and provided Biblical teaching on how abusive marriages can be better addressed by the faith-based community. Since the release of her book, she has been invited to speak about divorce and domestic violence in the church, teach classes, and to offer hope and practical life-saving tools to victims. McKissick, who considers herself a domestic wellness advocate, says that she is most looking forward to continuing to help families heal through her new business. She plans to continue to partner with churches and ministries across the U.S. to share her services with their parishioners, as well as network with family law firms and government agencies across the state of Michigan.

Individuals can register for the free 60-minute webinar on April 9 at www.thedivorcepreacher.com. Only an email address is required for registration for those concerned about confidentiality.

World Vision is providing aid to war torn Ukraine

World Vision says the escalation of conflict in Ukraine has forced more than 3.5 million people – mostly women and children – to flee to neighbouring countries. With the escalating crisis, the casualties, the number of displaced and the needs are growing by the hour. One in five Ukrainian children is now living as a refugee.

Since the conflict started, our teams have been on the ground assessing and responding to the urgent needs of those searching for safety. We are working to support refugees in Romania, Georgia and Moldova as well as internally displaced people in Ukraine.

Our response to date includes providing food, water, hygiene kits to affected families in Ukraine and Romania and we are mobilising teams to meet the needs of growing refugee populations in Georgia and Moldova.

The impact of the crisis will be far-reaching. Both Russia and Ukraine are global suppliers of gas and commodities such as grain. Conflict will create economic shockwaves around the world which could result in significant shortages causing prices to spike, hurting those already struggling to survive.

World Vision promise to continue to call on all sides to promote peace

East Brunswick Community Church Launches

East Brunswick Community Church is a non-denominational congregation inspired by grace, not driven by guilt, that is working for the good of its community.

Started with the purpose of being a truly local church committed to the well-being of the community, Point Community Church East Brunswick took its final step of the journey by incorporating in October of 2021 as East Brunswick Community Church. EBCC is an independent non-denominational congregation whose mission is to restore people’s faith in God and to work for the good of its community.

In our quick-moving, rapidly-changing, and increasingly isolated culture, it’s easy to feel disconnected to everything and everyone. We want to change that by restoring people’s faith through a relationship with God and others. We are a church that celebrates our diversity, practices hospitality, and strives to provide this world a reason to believe in Jesus by the way we live, love, and serve others. Far too many people have a negative experience with religion and church. At EBCC, we want to change that. We want every person to feel loved by God and welcomed by us the moment they arrive.

Our worship service is causal and lasts about 75-90 minutes. We sing contemporary worship songs and hymns led by our worship team. We start at 10AM but come early or stay late to enjoy some coffee and pastries in a casual and friendly environment. A children’s program is available during our teaching time. Plan to hang around after the service to meet and connect with new people.

EBCC also partners with local organizations like the East Brunswick Interfaith Council, Aldersgate Outreach Community Center, Raritan Valley YMCA, Interfaith-Rise in Highland Park, and Urban Revival in New Brunswick. Additionally, they regularly participate in township sponsored events like the Unity Walk, East Brunswick Day, and local cleanup projects.

Our Sunday worship service takes place at 144 Tices Lane at 10AM but our offices and gatherings such as Youth Group, Men’s Group, and other gatherings happen at 568 Ryders Lane. You can find additional information about us at www.myebcc.org and on Facebook under EBCC or East Brunswick Community Church. Please join us for a special celebration on Sunday April 17, 2022 at 10AM for a Spring Festival, Egg Hunt and Easter Celebration. A schedule of that morning’s events can be found on our Facebook page and website. It’ll be a morning of great fun.
