Christian Post Report – Jordan Smith, season 9 winner of “The Voice,” sings “Mary, Did You Know?”
Jordan Smith, who won last year’s “The Voice,” asked his coach Adam Levine for marriage advice, and received this suggestion: “Listen to the woman, man. She’s always right.”
Smith, 22, who sang several gospel songs during “The Voice” competitions, got engaged with his girlfriend Kristen Denny a few weeks ago, and wanted Levine, the lead vocalist for the Los Angeles pop rock band Maroon 5, to give him some advice before he gets married.
“Hey Adam, I’m getting married. Got any marriage advice for me, coach?” Smith, 22, says in a clip obtained by PEOPLE.
“Congratulations entering the world of marriage, Jordan Smith,” Levine, who’s married since 2014, responds. “Listen to the woman, man. She’s always right. Even when you don’t always think that’s the case, make her feel like it is. Trust me.”
At a press conference last week, Smith, a vocal Christian who attended the evangelical Lee University in Tennessee, said he wants to use his fame to glorify God.
“I had this dream in my heart to be a part of the show and I thought that I was meant to do it. I really thought for a very long time, for a few years, that I was meant to do this. When I auditioned and didn’t make it, it was a little devastating,” Charisma News quoted him as saying.
“I’m a very firm believer that even the right thing at the wrong time can be the wrong thing for you,” he added.
“It’s very important for me to keep that foundation so I have that to build everything else on. It allows me not to get caught up in this whole whirlwind … It’s easy to get caught up in that and become stressed and worried but … once I prepare myself in that way, I go into every situation feeling already prepared, already ready, knowing where my strength comes from, knowing where my help comes from.”
Speaking about his second audition for “The Voice,” Smith said he did that prayerfully. “I said, ‘I don’t want to use God’s name to promote my position, but I will use what position I have to promote Him and His name.’ When I started gaining this platform, that was something I had to keep reminding myself of,” he said.
In December, Smith, a Kentucky native, performed at Saddleback Church’s Lake Forest campus to kick-off its Christmas season services.
Smith has publicly credited his musical accomplishment to the training he received at Lee University. In addition to the Lee Singers, Smith was also director of Second Edition, a six-voice ensemble with band, and an active member of the worship team that leads campus chapel services.
