Topic: Bridle Your Tongue [Saturday, 29th April 2017]
He that keepeth his mouth keepeth his life: but he that openeth wide his lips shall have destruction. Proverbs 13:3
Most of us have heard the saying that “it is he who tells the king that someone said the king’s mouth smells that actually said the king’s mouth smells.” The words of our mouth can either push us forward or bring us down. I had an experience some days back, that if only I had kept my mouth shut for just a few minutes, things would have ended well. At one point or another in our small lives, we’ve had times we deeply regretted something we said. Well, we’re not alone. The wisest man ever before Jesus came had a lot to tell us about the words of our mouth, and how to speak. We’ll pick just two.
Proverbs 16:10 says – “a divine sentence is in the lips of the king: his mouth transgresseth not in judgement.” Now we know as believers that we are king’s and priests (1Peter 2:9). A King is the ultimate judge of his people. His judgements cannot be appealed against because they are final. While a priest has the final word from God. The message he gives must be abided by God because they are from the Creator. Now, King Solomon tells us that the mouth of a King transgresses not in judgement. That means if we do not bridle our tongues, we will transgress in judgement, and the lives of those beneath us will be destroyed. Why? As kings, our judgements are final, and cannot be appealed against.
Proverbs 17:27 says – “he that hath knowledge spareth his words: and a man of understanding is of an excellent spirit.” This is simple and straight forward. It is not in every situation that you open your mouth. There are times, you need to just keep mute. While growing up we were always told that silence is the best answer for a fool. Verse 28 of Proverbs 17 emphasizes this thus: “even a fool, when he holdeth his peace, is counted wise: and he that shutteth his lips is esteemed a man of understanding.” Wow! “I will take heed to my ways, that I sin not with my tongue: I will keep my mouth with a bridle, while the wicked is before me.” (Psalms 39:1). It seems simple but is of great consequence, a man that controls his tongue has control of his life. Bridle your tongue.
Keep winning daily.
Prayer:
Dear Father, thank You for the power placed in me by virtue of my tongue. Help me therefore to use it wisely, and choose life daily, in Jesus’ Name. Amen.
