Russian businessman and investor, Dmitry Rybolovyev, did own one of the most expensive art collections ever. But a huge divorce settlement between him and his wife Elena Rybolovyev is one of the reasons he has decided to sell the panting.

The artwork, Salvator Mundi (Saviour of the World), is the last Leonardo Da Vinci in private hands and will go on sale in Christie’s auction house in New York next month. It shows a typical Renaissance portrayal of Jesus from that period of him as a white man with long hair. Dmitry Rybolovyev bought it for $127.5 million.

The painting was created for Louis XII of France in the 16th century and belonged to Charles I in 1649, the year he was executed.

However, in 1958 it was bought for £45 as the artist was unknown. Its authenticity wasn’t discovered until 2011.
