Churches are busy. Some are too busy for their own good. So today, we discuss what a zero-based church schedule might look like and how to practice the exercise on your own.

Some highlights from today’s episode include:

  • Most churches have not made the crossover from the program-centered church to the current reality of church schedules.
  • Don’t let the church calendar become the end instead of the means.
  • When it comes to church events, churches add, but they rarely subtract.
  • The most precious resource you have in your church is the time of the members.
  • It’s often better to invest more time in fewer things than less time in more things.
  • Churches should be good stewards of time.

The six points we cover are:

  1. Most churches have too many activities and programs and ministries for their members.
  2. Over the years, those churches have added many things to the calendar without subtracting many or any.
  3. Attempt this exercise. Start with a blank calendar.
  4. Now, fill in the calendar with only those activities you feel will really move the church forward.
  5. Look at those activities that didn’t make the cut.
  6. If you do this every year, your leadership will become more and more aware of how precious the resource of time is for your members.
