Russian Orthodox bishop says he can’t vote for Putin again

It is the first time the bishop from Ishim has spoken out against the regime, describing some of the President’s comments as ‘utterly blasphemous’.

He was referring to Putin’s comments where he compared Lenin’s tomb to holy relics and thus seemed to equate communism with Christianity.

Bishop Kurochkin wrote his comments on his page on the Russian social media website Vk.

He said: “An obstacle arose in my desire to vote for Putin. The obstacle was that Vladimir Vladimirovich made a rather malicious remark about Pyotr Arcadievich Stolypin.”

Stolypin was a monarchist from the early 1900s.

Kurochkin also reported that Putin said in a TV documentary: “Look, Lenin was put in the mausoleum. How is this different from the relics of saints for Orthodox believers or for Christians?”

Putin said in the programme that was aired at the weekend: “Communist ideology is very similar to Christianity, in fact, freedom, equality, brotherhood and justice – all of that is laid out in Scripture.”
