Democratic Unionist, Jim Shannon, who is a Christian, tabled an early day motion (EDM), which formally called for Westminster to acknowledge that prayer can help people.

The motion follows research by the Christian humanitarian charity Tear Fund, which suggested adults in the UK are praying more.

The survey Premier reported on, found that 51 per cent of adults in the UK pray.

Mr Shannon was supported by six other politicians that signed the EDM that welcomed the report’s encouragement for “people to recognise that prayer can help to restore strength, enables people to be closer to God and focuses their heart and mind; and believes that prayer can, and does, change things”.

Fellow Democratic Unionist members Gregory Campbell, Paul Girvan, Ian Jnr Paisley, and David Simpson signed along with Fiona Bruce from the Conservative party and Martyn Day from the Scottish National party.
