The Ofcom Online Nation study revealed the average adult spent around three hours 15 minutes a day on the internet last year.
Guy Brandon, a Christian author who wrote Digitally Remastered: A Biblical Guide to Reclaiming Your Virtual Self, told Premier: “There is never going to stop being new content and new information and it’s very easy to let it just come to us.
“It’s not simply the quantity of time, the thing that we need to be careful about is the nature of that time,” he added.
The report also found around a quarter of children have experienced cyber-bullying and unwelcome friend requests in the last 12 months.
Guy Brandon questioned our approach to online communication, highlighting the dangers of building superficial and self- serving connections: “Are we using it to passively consume updates, or is this something that we use to actively engage other people, further our relationships, do something good and productive?
“Very often on the web, it tends to be a sort of one-way process of consumption,” he said.
As digital technology continues to progress, Mr Brandon is encouraging Christians to be more intentional in cultivating healthy relationships online.
