What do you know about the Methodist choir performing at Glastonbury?

Langa Methodist Choir are taking the main stage on the Sunday morning at 11am, just hours before Kylie, Miley Cyrus and The Cure perform there.

The choir are from a suburb of Cape Town in South Africa and were discovered by festival founder Michael Eavis when he went there to see how Oxfam were using the money donated by Glastonbury festival.

 

 

On 1st April Mr Eavis wrote to the authorities who will be looking at the choir’s passports and visas, asking for their applications to be looked upon ‘favourably’.

He said: “While in Cape Town, I sat in on a practise of the Methodist Church Choir singing traditional Wesley hymns.

“My family have been involved with Methodism for a couple of hundred years, so I was very familiar with these hymns – but this singing was absolutely amazing – I have never seen anything like it before in my life!

 

 

“I instantly wanted to invite the choir to England to bring their phenomenal sound to our festival audience.”

He went on to say that his team have arranged a week-long stay for the choir, including accommodation and travel, all paid for.

The Langa Methodist Choir’s performance will be broadcasted live on the BBC 11:00-11:45 before Mavis Staples

The choir are having a ‘Send off to the UK’ concert at the local high school in the Langa township on 22nd June before they perform in the west country on Sunday 26th June.
