Sir David Attenborough joins scientists in calling for end to teaching creationism in Welsh schools

The Welsh Government is currently consulting on a new national curriculum that will drastically overhaul education in Wales and unlike in England, it does not currently explicitly prohibit teaching creationism.

Sir David Attenborough has joined around 50 scientists who’ve signed a petition calling for the teaching of creationism to be banned.

 

In a joint letter called ‘Teach evolution, not creationism’ in Wales’, they said “nothing in biology makes sense except in the light of evolution”.

A Church of England priest and the Christian think tank Ekklesia have also signed the petition.

Geologist historian Rev Michael Roberts told Premier teaching creationism in a Science class doesn’t make sense.

“It has simply has no scientific credibility whatsoever as it’s based on a misunderstanding and misrepresentation of what science says, not only biology, but particularly geology with the vast age of the earth.”

He added that although he believes God is the creator of everything, science teachers should be neutral on whether there is a creator.

Creationist John MacKay disagrees with the view and says it’s important for creationism to be included in the classroom.

“It’s nonsense to say we’ve got to leave creation out because it’s the concept of creation and the creator that gave rise to the belief that there are rules and laws.”
