House Sends Impeachment Articles to the Senate, Trial Date Is Set


The United States House of Representatives has transmitted its article of impeachment against President Donald Trump to the Senate, setting up a landmark trial.

A resolution cementing the decision was passed almost completely along party lines with a vote of 228-193. Rep. Collin Peterson, D-Minn., was the only Democrat who chose to vote against the action, which comes just a month after articles of impeachment were introduced against the President in relation to his dealings with Ukraine. Trump is accused of pressuring the Ukrainian President to open up an investigation into his political rival and 2020 Democratic candidate for President, Joe Biden.

“We are here today to cross a very important threshold in American history,” Speaker of the United States House of Representatives, Nancy Pelosi, proclaimed ahead of the vote, according to Fox News.

“When someone is impeached, they are always impeached,” added the California Democrat. “It cannot be erased.”

Not everyone agreed with Pelosi’s sentiments, however. House Minority Leader Kevin McCarthy, R-Calif., slammed the Democrats for becoming obsessed with the process, which many have called a partisan “sham.”

“This is not a moment this body should be proud of. As Pelosi says, impeachment is a national civics lesson. Let’s use this blunder as a teachable moment,” McCarthy said.
