The Episcopal Church interspersed Beyoncé songs with readings from the Psalms and Luke and a sermon by a theology lecturer who teaches the class ‘Beyoncé and the Hebrew Bible’.
The guest preacher, Reverend Yolanda Norton, is the Assistant Professor of Old Testament at San Francisco Seminary. She told Fox KTVU: “We’re just saying let’s use that as a conversation piece to talk about god. This is a worship service. I know people think this is a gimmick, that we’re worshipping Beyoncé. None of that is true.”
The order of service featured the Beyoncé songs ‘Survivor’ followed by prayer, ‘Listen’ before a reading of Psalm 137 and ‘Freedom’ with ‘I Was Here’ to end before the Benediction.

The regular pastor, Revd Jude Harmon said: “”We thought it would be kind of a small exploration as a community about what it means to lift up black female voices because traditionally the church hasn’t done a great job of that.”
