Tim Farron pulls out of Christian Northern Men’s Convention, citing concerns over publicity material

The Christian politician, who resigned as Liberal Democrat leader last year following controversy over his views on sexuality, also said he was “saddened” by publicity circulated by the Northern Men’s Convention.

Writing on Twitter, he said: “I agreed many months ago to attend a church-organised event but just today I’ve seen promotional material for it which contains things I’m deeply concerned and saddened by.

 

“As a result, I have withdrawn from the event.”

The Westmorland and Lonsdale MP was due to appear alongside Christian speaker Rupert Bentley-Taylor during the event at Holy Trinity Platt Church on Saturday.

In the welcome section of the conference’s website, organisers warn that “assaults on orthodox Christian teaching, and morality, especially in the area of sexuality, seem to have increased at an alarming rate”.

 

They continue: “The leadership from those in authority in the denominations who should be the guardians of Biblical truth has been muted to say the least and even in Bible-teaching churches many appear to be wavering under the onslaught of the gay lobby.”

Suggesting that Christians are being increasingly marginalised, they also said believers “fear… standing up and speaking out” about their faith.
