After large scale protests in the Central American country, a commission set out to find out if there were human rights abuses.

The Inter-American Commission confirmed there had been 76 deaths and more than 800 people injured.

They also found evidence of torture, random arrests and censorship of the press.

In a statement, Karol Balfe from Christian Aid said: “Christian Aid strongly condemns any and all violations of human rights in Nicaragua.

“The preliminary report by the Inter American Commission set up to investigate the situation, is very worrying. Urgent measures must be taken to ensure that human rights in Nicaragua are protected.”

“We welcome the recommendations of the commission and strongly support the dialogue as a way to reach a peaceful and democratic solution to the conflict.”

The charity work in Nicaragua with other groups to try to tackle inequality and defend human rights.
