According to the Telegraph, the gay Anglican vicar said: “I used to think the BBC should include same sex couples on Strictly but now I’ve done it I can see why it might choose not to.

“There’s a complementarity when men and women dance together which is different when the couples are same sex.

“Different is fine, and I have no objection to it, and would happily dance my legs off with everyone from AJ to Anton, but I get the aesthetic argument.”

Rev Coles added that he hasn’t felt “the slightest twinge of homophobia” from the show.

His comments come after BBC announced that it has no plans to feature same-sex couples on the dance show and it will stick to its traditional format.

Last year Rev Coles said it makes “no sense” that anyone would resist having same-sex couples taking to the dance floor in the show.

He was speaking after fellow contestant Susan Calman, who is a lesbian, had been criticised on social media for not having a female professional partner.
