Christian charity welcomes government plans to end homelessness by 2027

Housing Justice, who help co-ordinate night shelters for anyone who needs it, said it is good the issue is being addressed by the Conservatives.

Their director, Jacob Quagliozzi, told Premier: “I think it’s encouraging to hear the government talking about rough sleeping and homelessness first of all and restating their commitment to doing something about it.

“We join in the kind of consensus really from the wider homelessness sector which is that this is on the right trajectory but there’s a lot more to do if we’re going to be serious about doing anything long term.”

Quagliozzi praised the fact the plans recognise the complexities of the issue – that it’s not simply about providing a roof but working on prevention as well.

Speaking of which issues the government will need to address if they want to prevent homelessness in the first place, he said: “There’s no getting away from the fact that the single biggest cause of statutory homelessness in England and Wales is the end of a tenancy in the private rented sector and we’ve got to do something about that.

“Partly, that is a reflection of a systemic problem in the UK housing market – that there’s not enough homes that people can afford in a sustainable way so tenancies are ending but also there’s a question about how sustainable those tenancies are.”
