Rev Peter McConnell allegedly touched a man on-board an overnight British Airways flight from Philadelphia to Heathrow last March, Newcastle Crown Court was told.

The 63-year-old vicar of St Helen’s Church in Longhorsley denies one charge of sexual assault.

The court heard that Rev McConnell moved to a seat next to the alleged victim and tried to engage in conversation, making “odd” comments which made him feel “very uncomfortable”.

The American student claimed the vicar had been drinking “pretty heavily”.

The court was also told Rev McConnell “apologised profusely” after the alleged incident.

Rev McConnell said he neither touched the alleged victim nor engaged in graphic conversation with him.

The trial continues.
