TOPIC: Modern-Day “Corinthians” (Mountain Of Fire And Miracle Ministries Sunday, 2 September 2018)

FIRE SCRIPTURE: 1 Corinthians 10:12

MEMORY VERSE: “Wherefore let him that thinketh he standeth take heed lest he fall.”1 Corinthians 10:12

The MESSAGE:

Corinth was a prosperous, but sin-filled city. This did not stop Paul from preaching the gospel in such a polluted environment, proving that where sin abounds, grace did much more abound (Romans 5:20). People living in such a sinful environment today also need the same four exhortations Paul gave to the Corinthian Christians. Paul pointed out that the Corinthian church was guilty of the same sins that the Jews committed because of their lust for evil things like immorality and idolatry. They, like the children of Israel in the wilderness, murmured against God. Paul, however, beseeched and charged them firstly to beware of idolatry. There is a trap about idolatry, as we tend to conform to the values of our society. Paul used the illustration of the Israelites in the wilderness where they “offered burnt offerings, and brought peace offerings: and the people sat down to eat and drink, and rose up to play” (Exodus 32:6).

The Israelites initiated the false worship of the people around them rather than wait for Moses to come down from the mountain with God’s instructions. Believers are in the world but must not conform to the standards of the world. Believers must be environmental transformers rather than conformers. The second charge is to beware of fornication. Our society is inundated with sexually-explicit messages that urge instant carnal gratification. Paul referred to the time of Israel’s stay in Shittim where the men were enticed by the women of Moab into committing fornication and later idolatry (Numbers 25: 1,2).

The third charge is to beware of a complaining attitude. Many Israelites were destroyed by “fiery serpents” when they blamed God and Moses for the poor diet in the wilderness (Numbers 21:4-6). We must be grateful to God in all situations we face. Grumbling provokes divine anger and it is a ticket to sudden destruction. The fourth charge is to beware of discontent and ingratitude. Because of Israel’s negative attitude to God in the wilderness, despite His provision for them, God allowed none of them to enter into the Promised Land except Caleb, Joshua, and those under 20 years of age (Numbers 14:22-30). What an admonition to Christians today! We must not think because the Jews were under the Law, that their sins were worse than ours, and therefore, dealt with more severely. Sin in the church today is far more serious because we have Israel and other biblical examples to learn from. In addition to these, we are living “at the end of the ages”. To sin against the law is one thing, to sin against grace is quite something else. Hence we must be careful not to be contemporary Corinthians!

MOTIVATIONAL QUOTE:
BEWARE OF DISCONTENTMENT AND INGRATITUDE; IT PROVOKES DIVINE ANGER AND JUDGEMENT.
