New gift aid plan simplifies donations for hundreds of Christian charities

Gift Aid is a scheme where the government adds 25p to every pound given to a charity if the donor is a UK tax payer.

When a person donates, they usually have to state whether they are eligible for the charity to claim gift aid on their donation from the government.

However, normally the original donations and the gift aid amount enter the accounts of the charities separately, making it confusing to keep records.

To tackle this, Stewardship, who encourage Christian giving and help Christian groups with their donations, plans to introduce an ‘Instant Gift Aid’ plan on all gifts of up to £25,000, rather than have the delay on the gift aid amount being received.

CEO of Stewardship, Stewart McCulloch said: “One of our goals is to make it easy for Christians to give to the causes they care about.

“Currently, our givers experience a delay distributing funds to good causes because of the different clearance periods – one for their payment and second for the claimed Gift Aid. This makes for a slightly complicated user experience, but our team have been working hard over the past year to find a way to make this simpler and so to improve the giving process.”
