Simon Hoare who is also the Parliamentary Private Secretary to Home Secretary Sajid Javid said faith schools were the ‘jewel in the crown’ of the education system.

He was speaking at an event at the Conservative party conference hosted by the Catholic Bishops’ Conference and the Catholic Education Service.

He said his party was committed to continuing support for Catholic education and spoke positively on the how the Government is working to secure the long-term future of Catholic education.

He also talked of the need to promote the fact that Catholic schools offer a high quality education for pupils of all faiths and none – referencing the quarter of a million pupils in Catholic schools who are not of the Catholic faith.

His comments come just months after the government announced it would not follow through with a previous promise to allow faith schools more freedoms with their admissions policies.

The plan received criticism as it would have meant schools would no longer need to adhere to the rule of only admitting 50 per cent of pupils who shared the school’s faith.

There are more than 2,200 Catholic schools in England and Wales educating over 850,000 pupils.
