Reverend, now Lord McCrea of Magherafelt and Cookstown, has made the number of DUP members of the House of Lords four.
When someone joins either House in parliament they are asked to give their maiden speech as a setting-out of their main interests and their aims while they are there.
Lord McCrae told the peers in his: “I believe it is also important that I nail my colours to the masthead. For 50 years I served as a Christian minister in Magherafelt and only recently stepped down from my responsibilities there.
“With deep humility, I thank God for all the years He has given me as a preacher of the Gospel of the Lord Jesus and, by His Grace, I will seek to take my stand for Him in this House.”
The new peer did theology training with Free Presbyterian Church of Ulster in Belfast, which was founded by Iain Paisley MP.
McCrea then received an Honorary Doctorate of Divinity from Mariette Bible College in Ohio.
He represented Mid Ulster as an MP for the Democratic Unionist Party between 1983-1997 and South Antrim twice after 2000.
He was also ordained as the minister of Calvary Free Presbyterian Church in Magherafelt and recorded Christian music.
