Christian charity warns about latest climate change forecasts for UK

The Environment Secretary, Michael Gove on Monday called for urgent action on climate change, as the new forecasts predict warmer and drier weather in the UK.

It’s projected that summer temperatures could be hotter by up to 5.4 degrees Celsius by 2070 – and average summer rainfall could fall by nearly half.

Sea levels are also projected to rise over the 21st century.

Andy Lester, Conservation Director with A Rocha UK told Premier that the new figures are worrying.

“We’re facing a new reality, and that is that within many people’s lifetimes, the impact of climate change will have a day-to-day effect on many of our lives, which in some cases will make the difference between life and death.”

The Department for Environment, Food and Rural Affairs said in a statement: “The UK already leads the world in tackling climate change with emissions reduced by more than 40 per cent since 1990. However these projections show a future we could face without further action.”

Further predictions are that the chance of a summer as hot as 2018 is around 50 per cent by 2050, sea levels in London could rise by up to 1.15 metres by 2100 and average summer rainfall could decrease by up to 47 per cent by 2070, while there could be up to 35 per cent more precipitation in winter.

Nevertheless, Lester told Premier that the UK and individual Christians can still make a difference.
