How Involved Should the Lead Pastor Be in the Selection of Worship Songs?

A church with one service a week will likely sing over two hundred songs in a year. Our church has five services in two languages at two sites on Sunday. We also have Wednesday night programming. Throw in the student service and children’s ministry, and we probably sing close to two thousand songs in a year (obviously some are sung more than once).

Songs elicit emotion. That’s how the art form works. Worship is no exception. Most have a favorite worship song. Most will have a few worship songs they don’t like. One song can mean something different to two people standing next to each other in the same service. A worship pastor can craft an excellent plan of two thousand songs in a year and still receive complaints about “that one song.” In my pastoral experience, people care more about song selection than they do church doctrine.

Given the acute attention to worship songs, I asked a question of the Church Answers community and posted the same question on Twitter. The poll was done more for fun than science, but over three hundred people responded.

How involved should the lead pastor be in the selection of worship songs?

The Church Answers community provided a lot of clarification around these percentages in Church Answers Central, our coaching and consulting forum.

The level of involvement should be higher with a less experienced worship pastor. A long-tenured lead pastor will have more oversight with a new, inexperienced worship pastor. An inexperienced and young lead…

9 Reasons Churches Stop Evangelizing Well

In reviewing a church’s history, it’s much more likely to find them an evangelizing church during their early years than their later ones. Frankly, most churches lose the evangelistic passion that marked them in their beginning. Here are some reasons why:

  1. In their early days, reaching lost people is part of their vision – but that focus decreases as the church grows. No longer are they driven to evangelize as much once the church reaches critical mass.
  2. As the church matures, leaders give their attention to internal matters. Questions like what type of polity will we have, when will we build (if we do), what curriculum will we follow, and others divert attention from evangelism.
  3. Pastoral care requires more time as the church grows. It’s really a simple formula: more people in the congregation = more needs to meet and more requests for care. It’s tough to meet those needs and evangelize, too.
  4. Leaders fail to equip others to help them do ministry. Instead of delegating work so they can keep casting vision for evangelism, they wind up carrying all the responsibilities themselves. Evangelism almost always takes a back seat then.
  5. Fellowship—as great as it can be—becomes self-protective. That is, the church loves to be together because it feels like a “safe place” from a messed-up and chaotic world. Churches in protection mode seldom invite outsiders to join them.
  6. Transfer growth takes their attention off evangelism. The church might well be growing, but it’s growing by…

Around 270 Whales Stranded on Sandbar Off Australia’s Tasmania – Urban Christian News

SYDNEY (Reuters) – Marine biologists were planning the rescue of around 270 whales stranded on a sandbar off the remote west coast of the Australian island of Tasmania on Monday.

Government scientists said it appeared that at least 25 of the animals, believed to be pilot whales, had already died. Pilot whales are a species of oceanic dolphin that grows 7 metres (23 ft) long and can weigh up to 3 tonnes.

“While strandings are not uncommon in Tasmania, and while strandings of this scale aren’t (unprecedented), we certainly haven’t had one for at least 10 years,” Nic Deka, a regional manager for Tasmania Parks and Wildlife Service, said.

Tasmania’s Department of Primary Industries, Parks, Water and Environment said the whales were stranded in three groups in shallow water at Macquarie Heads, some 200 kms (120 miles) northwest of the state capital Hobart.

Rescuers with specialised equipment arrived at the site on Monday afternoon to assess the situation. They were expected to regroup on the shore as it grew dark to discuss a rescue strategy.

Officials usually respond to reports of strandings of dolphins and whales in Tasmania once every two or three weeks, on average.

Government scientists had first thought the mass stranding involved about 70 whales when it was viewed from the air, but a closer inspection revealed the larger number.

The last mass stranding off the coast of Tasmania was in 2009, when around 200 whales beached themselves. In 2018, more than 100 pilot whales died after beaching themselves off the coast of New Zealand.

It is not known why whales, which travel.… Read More

Christian Killed in Fulani Herdsmen Ambush in North-Central Nigeria

Christian Killed in Fulani Herdsmen Ambush in North-Central Nigeria

JOS, Nigeria, September 21, 2020 (Morning Star News) – Fulani herdsmen on Thursday (September 17) shot a Christian who was riding on a motorcycle with a policeman in north-central Nigeria, sources said.

Sati Bulus, a member of the Church of Christ in Nations (COCIN) in Malul village in Bokkos County, Plateau state, was ambushed and shot to death by Fulani herdsmen at about 8:30 p.m. as he made his way home from Bokkos town, said area resident Christopher Luka. The Fulani are predominantly Muslims.

The Rev. Samuel Matawal, a COCIN pastor in Bokkos town, confirmed the killing in Daffo District in a short text message to Morning Star News.

“A member of our local congregation at Malul village was ambushed and shot dead by some Fulani herdsmen on Thursday, Sept. 17,” Pastor Matawal said.

The assailants reportedly killed the policeman riding with Bulus. Nigerian news outlet MK-Reporters added that Fulani herdsmen leaders had met on Sept. 14 in Fass, Barkin Ladi County, to plan resumption of hostilities in Daffo District and three other areas in Plateau state before December.

Donations of 1.3 million naira (US$3,378) for the purchase of weapons were raised at the meeting, the outlet reported.

Prior Attack

Herdsmen had attacked predominantly Christian Malul village in February, killing one Christian and injuring another, Luka said.

“At about 9:30 a.m. on Feb. 14, a group of seven armed Fulani…

40 Days for Life Prayer Vigil to Have Record Participation despite COVID-19

40 Days for Life Prayer Vigil to Have Record Participation despite COVID-19

40 Days for Life, a pro-life prayer vigil campaign, is set to have record participation due to having the most participating cities this year. The prayer vigil, which will take place from Sept. 23 through Nov. 1, has 588 participating cities, the most since the campaign was first held back in 2007.

Shawn Carney, the president and CEO of 40 Days for Life, told The Christian Post that “Many thought that the pandemic and civil unrest in our streets would be a deterrent, but I am so proud of the local leaders who came out in droves to apply, train, and lead their campaign locally.”

“The desire to help women and their unborn children is at an all-time high despite nearly five decades of legalized abortion. The pro-life movement gets larger and younger by the day and that is illustrated in this record,” he continued. He also said he wasn’t going to let the pandemic stop the prayer vigil. He trained his staff to be ready to take all the necessary precautions to ensure it’s not going to be shut down by the government.

40 Days for Life is a pro-life organization that is working to end abortion by holding prayer vigils and taking pro-life conversations to the streets via community outreach. The organization goes door-knocking to gather signatures for petitions and to inform people on the truth about abortion and why it is wrong and needs to end. They also hold 40-day campus outreaches…

Saudi Arabia, Israel Making Progress on Peace

Saudi Arabia, Israel Making Progress on Peace

Peace talks between Saudi Arabia and Israel are reportedly progressing, The Times of Israel reports.

Israel has expressed openness to peace with Saudi Arabia, but Saudi Arabia is having a bit of infighting between the older leader, King Salman, and his 35-year-old son, Mohammed bin Salman.

The King, who is 84 years old, is skeptical of a peace deal with Israel over what he sees as national sovereignty and security issues. Meanwhile, the son is pro-peace with Israel.

The main issue is the Palestinians. Salman believes The Palestinians are a good ally for Saudi Arabia, while his son believes they are not as good an ally as Israel. This is because Iran is being seen as a rising force in the region, and Israel has proven a strong partner in helping to curb Iran’s force with other Arab nations. But many seem to agree with the crown prince instead of his father, according to New York-based rabbi, Marc Schneier, who told The Times Of Israel “It’s no secret there’s a generational conflict … for the Saudis, it’s not a question of ‘if,’ it’s a question of ‘when.’ And there’s no doubt that they will establish relations with Israel.”

But not everyone is so quick to dance to that tune. One other ruler in the region, Turki al-Faisal, told The Times of Israel that “any talk of a rift between the king and the crown prince is mere speculation. We’ve seen none of that.”

But either way, sources confirm…

American Sign Language Bible Translation Completed after 39 Years

American Sign Language Bible Translation Completed after 39 Years

After 39 years, a translation of the Bible in American Sign Language has been completed.

The final books needed, Isaiah, Jeremiah and Ezekiel, were completed this fall.

According to Christianity Today, work on translating the Bible into ASL started in 1981 with Duane King, a minister in the Independent Christian Church.

King, who is hearing, had learned to sign after meeting a deaf Christian couple in 1970. The couple told King they avoided going to church because they did not understand what was going on. King said he felt he needed to help the deaf community.

King and his wife, Peggy, then started a church and a mission for the deaf in Iowa. In 1981, King started work on an ASL Bible.

“Most hearing people don’t understand how difficult it is to learn to read what you cannot hear,” King said in 2019. “Deaf people rely so much on their eyesight that they want everything to be tangible—they want to be able to see everything.”

Translation to sign language begins with the adaptation of the English words to a “front translation,” a version that uses a word order and vocabulary that corresponds to sign language.

Harold Noe, a Hebrew and Greek scholar who worked with Deaf Missions, said in an interview in 2004 that the translation can be difficult because ASL has a different syntax than English.

“The same sign used for `resurrection’ is the sign for `stand up,'” Noe said. “I recall working…

Tim Keller Encourages Christians to Vote Their Conscience, Stop Demonizing Other Political Parties

Tim Keller Encourages Christians to Vote Their Conscience, Stop Demonizing Other Political Parties

In a recent string of Twitter posts, author and pastor Tim Keller exhorted Christians to vote with a “liberty of conscience,” rejecting the idea that Christians must vote for a specific candidate.

According to The Christian Post, Keller shared that though the Bible teaches Christians important principles, it does not tell us how to carry out these ideas in our current political structure.

“The Bible binds my conscience to care for the poor, but it does not tell me the best practical way to do it,” he said. “Any particular strategy (high taxes and government services vs low taxes and private charity) may be good and wise and may even be somewhat inferred from other things the Bible teaches, but they are not directly commanded and therefore we cannot insist that all Christians, as a matter of conscience, follow one or the other.”

He continued to explain the same idea with immigration. The tweets spurred heavy debate amongst Twitter users who argued that Keller was loose on abortion.

“Some folks are missing the point of…

That’s So Raven Star Finds Sobriety through Christian Recovery Program

That’s So Raven Star Finds Sobriety through Christian Recovery Program

Rapper and former That’s So Raven actor Orlando Brown says a Christian recovery program has helped him break his addiction to drugs.

According to The Christian Post, Brown, who is most famous for his role as Eddie Thomas on the Disney Channel show That’s So Raven, will be graduating from Rise Discipleship in November.

Rise Discipleship is a 6-month in-patient recovery program for men struggling with addiction, homelessness and other issues. The program is sponsored by Rise Church in Abilene, Texas.

“I can tell you that I’m OK. I’m alive. I was in an unsafe position and it has been shaky but at the end of the day all I can tell you is I’m OK and I’m graduating and I will be getting married,” he said.

Brown, 32, was first arrested in February 2016 for domestic battery, obstruction of justice, drug possession with intent to sell and possession of contraband.

In 2018, he tried a rehabilitation facility, but was later arrested for drugs and prostitution charges.

Then this year, he claimed television host Nick Cannon once performed fellatio on him while dressed as a woman. Cannon denied the claims.

Also this year, Brown said actor Will Smith raped him as a child.

In a fundraising video for Rise Discipleship, Brown said he found acceptance “for who I am.”

“My fiancée told me about this place and when I came it was amazing,” he said. “I had a blast. These brothers…
