Garbage men dance to the delight of many: The impact of choosing joy

Adobe Stock

In the days of cameras on every phone and doorbells that record anyone who approaches a house, it seems like there’s always someone watching. Usually that’s a scary thought, but as three New Jersey garbage men remind us, it can also be a blessing.

The trio was recently caught dancing down the street to the “Cupid Shuffle” while picking up trash cans. The video went viral.

As William Watson, one of the three men, described it, “I was kind of going through something, and I’m looking around, everybody’s moping, and they’re sad. I started dancing. Then he started dancing, then he started dancing . . . We didn’t even know we were being recorded.”

Rodrick Samuels, another of the workers, started bringing a music speaker along their route the previous month because, in his view, the music “gets you through your day. Especially rain, cold weather.”

And the impact hasn’t gone unnoticed by those they serve. As one resident described, “They are the best garbage men ever. Ever. Hands down. The best. And they boost up your spirits all day, every day.”

“Let us rejoice”

While there may be a bit of exaggeration in that last statement, it just demonstrates the infectious quality of joy. When we live with joy, we can inspire others to do the same. The reason is that joy is a choice rather than merely the product of our circumstances.

As Watson pointed out, all three of the garbage men were having a pretty rough day before they started dancing. They could have simply gone about their business, got through the day, and hoped for a better tomorrow.

Instead, they chose to approach their remaining tasks with a different mentality. They chose joy, and that decision has brightened the day of countless others who saw the video.

Each of us has that same potential.

While most of us are probably not going to make it onto a viral video anytime soon, we each have the potential to help…

Patricia Heaton Warns Christians of Incoming ‘Onslaught’ of Arrogance, Ignorance following Trump’s SCOTUS Pick

Patricia Heaton Warns Christians of Incoming ‘Onslaught’ of Arrogance, Ignorance following Trump’s SCOTUS Pick

Patricia Heaton, who is best known for her role in the hit sitcom Everybody Loves Raymond, warned of an imminent anti-religious onslaught as President Trump plans to announce a Supreme Court nominee in the wake of the passing of the late Justice Ruth Bader Ginsburg.

“Friends, be prepared for social media to be filled with an onslaught of arrogant pronouncements based on breathtaking ignorance of religion in general, Christianity specifically and Catholicism in particularly by people who wouldn’t recognize God if He bit them on the bum.” Heaton, a professing Catholic, seemingly wrote in regards to the impending nomination on Sunday.

Faithwire reports that President Trump has confirmed that his nomination will be a woman. Many have pointed to Amy Coney Barrett, a circuit judge on the Chicago based U.S Court of Appeals for the Seventh Circuit as a potential successor to Ginsberg’s seat on the Supreme Court.

Barrett had previously served as a law clerk to the late Justice Antonin Scalia and as a law professor at Notre…

‘Put Faith in the Public Square,’ Secretary of State Mike Pompeo Encourages Christians

‘Put Faith in the Public Square,’ Secretary of State Mike Pompeo Encourages Christians

On Sunday, Secretary of State Mike Pompeo delivered remarks at Jack Graham’s Prestonwood Baptist Church in Plano, Texas. As a Christian himself, Pompeo encouraged believers not to shy away from expressing their faith in the public square despite opposition from critics.

Pastor Jack Graham, who leads the Texas-based megachurch, highlighted Pompeo’s resume and his Christian faith as “a follower of the Lord Jesus Christ and a believer in our Savior.”

According to The Christian Post, Pompeo stated that the eyes of the world are on America for direction and the world must know “America’s foundation as a Judeo-Christian nation.”

“Faith in the public square is not only lawful but righteous. This faith is not only powerful, but required by the American tradition,” he said.

Pompeo also quoted George Washington, America’s first president and one of the Founding Fathers: “Of all the dispositions and habits which lead to political prosperity, religion and morality are indispensable support.”

Regarding the Founding Fathers, Pompeo noted that they “put protection of human dignity and human freedom at the heart of our founding documents … To this day, America reflects this.”

The Secretary of State added that the work of the State Department must likewise reflect it.

Pompeo proceeded to highlight China’s oppression of Uyghur Muslims as an example of what a…

‘Parents Are Waking Up’: School Fires Christian Worker for Criticizing LGBT Curriculum

‘Parents Are Waking Up’: School Fires Christian Worker for Criticizing LGBT Curriculum

A British woman who was fired from her school assistant position for raising concerns about LGBT and sex education appeared before a tribunal Monday and told the court she was “shocked” when she was dismissed.

Kristie Higgs, a Christian and a mother of two, had worked for six years as an assistant at Farmor’s School in Fairford, Gloucestershire when she raised concerns on Facebook about the government’s Relationships and Sex Education (RSE) curriculum, which includes transgender and LGBT sex education. Her son attended the school, which is run by the Church of England.

According to Christian Concern, an anonymous person saw the Facebook posts and reported them to the school’s headteacher, who eventually dismissed Higgs. The mother reportedly was told the posts could “[bring] the school into disrepute.”

Christian Legal Centre is representing Higgs in her case to the employment tribunal.

“I have been punished for sharing concerns about relationships and sex education,” Higgs said in a news release. “I hold these views because of my Christian beliefs, beliefs and views which are shared by hundreds of thousands of parents across the U.K. My number one concern has always been the effect that learning about sex and gender in school will have on children at such a young age. I am determined to fight this case and to stand for Christians and all parents…

Biden Won’t Reveal if He Backs ‘Court-Packing,’ Says Trump Is Violating ‘Constitutional Principle’

Biden Won’t Reveal if He Backs ‘Court-Packing,’ Says Trump Is Violating ‘Constitutional Principle’

Democratic presidential nominee Joe Biden refused Monday to say whether he supports proposals by several prominent Democrats to add seats to the U.S. Supreme Court if President Trump and Republicans fill the vacancy left by the death of Justice Ruth Bader Ginsburg.

Trump said Tuesday he would announce his selection at the White House Saturday.

Although the U.S. Constitution sets the rules for court appointments – the president nominates and the Senate confirms new justices – it does not offer guidance on how many seats the court should have, leaving that up to Congress. Since 1869, the court has had nine seats.

U.S. Sen. Ed Markey (M.A.) said in a tweet that if Republicans fill the vacancy and Democrats take the Senate, “we must abolish the filibuster and expand the Supreme Court.” Such a move often is called “court-packing.”

When asked if Democrats would add seats to the high court if they win a majority, Senate Minority Leader Chuck Schumer (N.Y.) said that “everything is on the table.”

Democratic Rep. Alexandria Ocasio-Cortez (N.Y.) also said she supports court-packing.

Any…

America Is ‘Crumbling,’ Only God Can Fix It, Franklin Graham Says

America Is ‘Crumbling,’ Only God Can Fix It, Franklin Graham Says

In an interview with The Christian Post last Thursday, Evangelist Franklin Graham, President and CEO of humanitarian aid organization Samaritan’s Purse, discussed his upcoming prayer march, the current political atmosphere and national unrest.

“I think there’s kind of a boiling point here with many people. We have seen injustice on our streets and some of our communities. The frustration that people aren’t heard, that people are marginalized. It seems that all of this is boiling at the same time,” Graham said.

The evangelist added that politicians often exploit the current events, especially ahead of the upcoming presidential election. Nevertheless, Graham stressed that neither party can resolve the issues at hand.

“Republicans cannot fix it; Democrats cannot fix it. Only God can,” he asserted.

As God continues to be omitted from government, schools and society, Graham stated that it is a sign that the U.S. is “crumbling.”

“I don’t see our nation able to go much further unless we repent and call upon the name of Almighty God,” he said.

Regarding the state of many churches today, Graham also noted that it is difficult to determine whether or not the church will see another Great Awakening.

“For many in the church today, they’re comfortable and a lot of our pastors don’t want to rock the boat,” Graham stated.

The evangelist also discussed his upcoming prayer march, which will take place…

US at precipice, ‘dangerous moment’ unless nation returns to God: Jonathan Cahn

Unsplash/NeONBRAND

A Messianic Jewish rabbi believes the United States is in the midst of great shaking where the nation may soon pass the point of no return absent large-scale repentance.

In a Friday interview with The Christian Post, author Jonathan Cahn explained that his latest bookThe Harbinger II: The Return, is a follow-up of sorts to his previous book, The Harbinger: The Ancient Mystery That Holds the Secret of America’s Future, which explains the template for national judgment and begins with a strike on the land. For the United States, he believes that strike was the events of September 11, 2001.

That would be followed by a window of time where a nation has time to repent and turn back to God. Yet when the window closes, divine judgment is imminent. Ever since the publication of The Harbinger, he has been calling for and envisioning an event like The Return, a gathering of mass repentance that began on Sept. 18 and will last until Sept. 28. A Global Day of Prayer is planned for Sept. 26, along with a prayer march in Washington, D.C.

Together with Kevin Jessip, who is the president of the Global Strategic Alliance, Cahn felt strongly that 2020 was the year for this event to…

What Ruth Bader Ginsburg wrote when she was thirteen years old: The privilege of declaring and defending biblical truth

This week, Justice Ruth Bader Ginsburg will become the first woman in history to lie in state at the US Capitol. Her casket will be placed in the National Statuary Hall on Friday, where a formal ceremony for invited guests will be conducted.

Beforehand, her body will lie in repose at the Supreme Court Wednesday and Thursday. A private ceremony attended by her fellow justices, relatives, and close friends will be held in the Great Hall of the court building at 9:30 a.m. tomorrow. Her casket will then be brought outdoors for a public viewing under the Portico at the top of the front steps. Next week, her remains will be interred alongside her late husband in a private ceremony at Arlington National Cemetery

After her death last Friday, I read My Own Words, a collection of her most significant writings. The first piece in the compilation was published in her school newspaper in June 1946. She described and assessed “four great documents” that have changed the world: the Ten Commandments, the Magna Carta, the 1689 Bill of Rights in England, and the Declaration of Independence. She then affirmed the Charter of the United Nations as a fifth.

She was barely thirteen years old at the time.

Later that month, she published in the bulletin of her local Jewish Center an article which concludes: “There can be a happy world and there will be once again, when men create a strong bond towards one another, a bond unbreakable by a studied prejudice or a passing circumstance. Then and only then shall we have a world built on the foundation of the Fatherhood of God and whose structure is the Brotherhood of Man.”

How many of us could have written that paragraph when we were thirteen years old?

How her husband described her

The more I read about Ruth Bader Ginsburg, the…

David Platt calls for prayers as pastors struggle more than ever during pandemic

David Platt, pastor of McLean Bible Church near Washington, D.C., and founder of Radical, a resource ministry that serves churches, preaches during the second session of the two-day 2019 Pastors’ Conference held June 9-10 at the Birmingham-Jefferson Convention Complex. | Baptist Press/Adam Covington

Megachurch pastor and popular author David Platt will hold a special night of prayer for pastors this week as some church leaders he’s spoken with during the COVID-19 pandemic have told him they are struggling more than ever.

“Most every pastor I talk to is struggling. Including some who don’t want to go on,” Platt, the lead pastor of McLean Bible Church in Vienna, Virginia, wrote on Twitter last Thursday.

“If you’re a pastor, I want to pray for and encourage you specifically.”

In a short video message included with his tweet, Platt says that pastors are struggling in a variety of ways.

“Some say [they are] struggling more than they’ve ever struggled in life and ministry,” he stressed.

Some of them have even “served for decades,” the Radical author pointed out.
