DC church, vandalized during riots, offers message of ‘togetherness’ with racial justice-themed murals

In September 2020, a group of volunteers painted murals on the protective plywood panels placed at St. John’s Episcopal Church in Washington, D.C. Racial justice was a major theme of the work. | Rob Fisher

A historic Washington, D.C., church that was the subject of arson and graffiti during the summer riots recently had its protective plywood panels painted with racial justice imagery.

St. John’s Episcopal Church of Lafayette Square, a congregation located not far from the White House, had the murals painted onto the panels, which had been installed to protect their windows from vandalism, at an event on Saturday.

The Rev. Rob Fisher, rector at St. John’s Church, told The Christian Post in an interview on Tuesday that the event was coordinated with a local arts group called the P.A.I.N.T.S. Institute and with the DowntownDC Business Improvement District.

Fisher said that the event was aimed at turning “something that is a bit of an eyesore” into “colorful images offering message of love, healing, togetherness and peace in Jesus’ name.”

“The artists really put their hearts and souls into the works they created. Many expressed to me what an honor it was to decorate the…

Omission of Christianity as School Subject in Sudan an Error, Official Says

Omission of Christianity as School Subject in Sudan an Error, Official Says

JUBA, South Sudan, September 9, 2020 (Morning Star News) – The head of the body responsible for curricula in Sudan announced that a previous directive omitting Christian education as a subject for primary schools was in error, according to a new letter to educational directors.

Omer Ahmed al-Garay, director general of the National Centre for Curriculum and Educational Research (NCCER), wrote in the new letter that the body had not intended to omit Christianity from school subjects in the previous directive.

“In reference to our previous letter dated Aug. 23, 2020, regarding the school subjects, we wish to consider the new timetable attached,” Al-Garay wrote. “The old timetable had unintended error.”

The official document sent to directors of education in various states of Sudan directed them to reconsider omitted Religion Education subjects for primary schools in the newly introduced curriculum.

Al-Garay said he had received many calls from Christians asking why Christianity had been omitted from the list of school subjects.

“I apologize to Christian brothers who called asking why Christianity was dropped out from the school subjects,” Al-Garary wrote.

Church leaders in Sudan, however, met the new directive with skepticism. The Rev. Yahia Abdelrahim Nalu of the Sudan Presbyterian Evangelical Church (SPEC) told Morning Star News that Christianity will continue to be…

LGBTQ+ Group Threatens to Burn Down Church after Pastor Says Homosexuality Is a Sin

LGBTQ+ Group Threatens to Burn Down Church after Pastor Says Homosexuality Is a Sin

UK Pastor John Williamson of Newquay Baptist Church is facing violent threats from members of the LGBTQ+ community for insisting that homosexuality is a sin.

According to Christian Concern, a UK based watchdog organization, Williamson simply wrote, ”wonderful news!” in response to a news article that stated that the Cornwall Pride Parade was canceled. The festivities were originally scheduled to take place on August 29.

When an online user asked Williamson why he celebrated the cancellation, the pastor replied, “because I don’t think sin should be celebrated.”

Williamson proceeded to use Scripture to defend his stance on homosexuality. He cited the books of John, James, and 1 Corinthians 6:9-11.

The pastor then shared the article on his personal Facebook page, noting that his church had previously prayed for the cancellation of the parade.

“We also prayed that the Lord would save the organisers. One prayer answered, now we wait for the second prayer to be answered,” he added.

But the parade organizers caught wind of Williamson’s page, took a screenshot of his post, tagged his church and posted it together with anti-LGBTQ+ comments by online users.

The names of the users were blocked out by Cornell Pride, in order to make it seem like Pastor Williamson was the one behind the negative comments.

Williamson’s wife received online threats as her husband’s head was…

A Texas church has installed a 45-foot tall cross that weighs around 35,000 pounds as the first step in building a new prayer park.

Katy Community Fellowship, a nondenominational congregation that has around 500 members, held a ceremony on Tuesday for the installation of the large cross.

Attendees for the lifting up of the cross included many church members, members of the community, the builder of the cross John King, and about 35 of his employees.

Pastor Tim Barker, who helped found Katy Community Fellowship back in 2000, told The Christian Post that the cross was erected as the first phase of an “acre prayer park next to our facility.”

Barker noted that the cross was made from corten steel which is expected to change into a reddish color over time and has 280 nails, according to Barker.

Shark kills surfer on protected beach: The frailty of life and urgency of compassion

Adobe Stock

Nick Slater, age forty-six, was fatally mauled Tuesday off a beach protected by shark netting. His death is only the second fatal shark attack at one of the eighty-five beaches in Queensland, Australia, that have been protected by nets and drum lines since 1962. Sharks can swim under and around the nets, which is apparently what happened this week.

In other news, a dentist in New York City is seeing an epidemic of cracked teeth, sometimes six in a day. She attributes this to pandemic-induced stress, working from home with bad posture (which produces nerve problems in our jaws), and teeth-grinding during restless sleep at night.

On a more positive note, guitar sales are booming. Fender is seeing the biggest year of sales volume in company history, and interest in guitar lessons on video is surging. The reason: as people are staying home during the pandemic, they are looking for something therapeutic to do. According to one neuroscientist, learning the guitar kindles hope and optimism, which helps regulate stable mood chemicals like serotonin and dopamine.

What do these stories have in common?

How much is Zoom up this year?

I recently participated in a Forbes webinar on digital transformation stocks. The presenter highlighted stocks in a variety of areas that illustrate the massive, disruptive changes happening right now as a result of digital technology.

For example, he stated that Netflix has grown from a mail-order DVD company to a streaming giant whose shares are up 11,390 percent since 2009. The company added twenty-five million subscribers just during this year’s pandemic. (That’s a population larger than every American state except California and Texas).

Other examples:

  • Zoom video is up to three hundred million users, with shares up 307 percent since last year.
  • Teladoc Health shares are up 156 percent in 2020.
  • Peloton, the at-home workout platform, has grown 120 percent this year.
  • Apple’s…

Butter It, Tofu It, Dip It. But Don’t Boil It.

Corn, off the cob and into a world of possibilities.

The post Butter It, Tofu It, Dip It. But Don’t Boil It. appeared first on TASTE.

Creating a Structure for Digital Church

By now you are tired of hearing how much has changed since March. I will spare you the grandiose talk of “unprecedented times” and all of that. What has amazed me is how quickly churches have made the pivot to online ministry in such a short period of time. I’m convinced that we have done ten years’ worth of innovation in six months. Let that sink in, and then own the fact that you have led well in this season.

Now that many churches have reopened and routes forward are being plotted, we are repeatedly hearing leaders wrestle with how to continue to gain momentum with their virtual ministries while at the same time continuing to grow their in-person experiences. This isn’t easy.

So, where do we start? I am convinced that we need to begin by defining how we are going to do virtual ministry. As we have learned from churches and researched best practices, we have determined that there are 5 models for doing virtual ministry:

  • The Old Normal: These are churches who want to get back to the way things were in January. The goal is to have everyone back together in the sanctuary and to move forward from there. These churches will have recorded sermons on their website in an on-demand format, but not much else.
  • The Simul Service: These churches have the goal of everyone being together, in-person, on Sunday mornings but will live stream their services so that those who are on vacation, sick, or otherwise indisposed on Sunday morning can have a ‘second-best’ option for attendance.
  • The…

Unplanned Producer Highlights President Trump’s Faith in Upcoming Film, The Trump I Know

Unplanned Producer Highlights President Trump’s Faith in Upcoming Film, The Trump I Know

In a recent interview with The Christian Post, Christian filmmaker Joe Knopp discusses his latest release, The Trump I Knowwhich humanizes the president through conversations with his family members and several women from the Trump Administration.

Knopp explained that the idea for the new documentary was sparked when he befriended Lara Trump, the President’s daughter-in-law, after he premiered his wildly popular pro-life film Unplanned for White House staffers.

“My passion for this story began when I met Lara Trump and she shared stories of the first family that I never heard before,” Knopp told The Christian Post last week. “Instantly, those stories humanized the family for me and I feel God wanted me to share the ‘why’ behind their stories.”

He continued, “God takes us on journeys usually in preparation for future events. When I listened to Lara, I began to understand why God placed their family in the White House during the most critical years our country has faced in decades, if not a century.”

The film will feature conversations that Knopp had with Lara, Kellyanne Conway, Mercedes Schlapp, Katrina Pierson, Kimberly Guilfoyle, Paula White Cain, and White House Press Secretary Kayleigh McEnany.

President Trump himself is also slated to appear in the film as well as his sons, Don Jr. and Eric Trump.

“There is definitely a thread of faith that…

5-Year-Old Boy Prays with National Guard Member amid Kentucky Derby Protests

5-Year-Old Boy Prays with National Guard Member amid Kentucky Derby Protests

During the Kentucky Derby Protests, a national guardsman was found on camera kneeling with a 5-year-old boy in prayer. The powerful moment reportedly brought “strength” to the soldiers there.

The national guardsman, Dan Otterson, told Fox News that he was in tears. “God sent a 5-year old boy to strengthen soldiers, and that’s something you can’t ever replicate,” he said.

After the prayer, Otterson went to talk with fellow soldiers about the interaction. He also posted a photo of him praying with the 5-year-old on his Facebook account, with a long explanation of what happened and why it came at a time that truly mattered for him and others. So far it has been shared nearly 600 times.

On his Facebook post, Otterson noted that his military unit had been regularly sent out to assist the local police department with monitoring heavily armed protestors and counter-protestors. One day, amid a crowd of protestors, Otterson noticed “an older black lady who had 3 very small children with her. She hung towards the back, was quiet, not saying anything towards my team or LMPD and waited for the majority of the protestors to thin out.”

Otterson then shared that “The lady approached our fence line and said that the youngest boy … wanted to pray for us.

“I could see he was timid so I approached him, got down on one knee, introduced myself and asked if he wanted to pray. What…
