3 Misconceptions About Credit Card Minimum Payments

Most people consider paying bills a less-than-fun pastime — to put it politely. Making
purchases on credit is convenient in the moment, but the statements always arrive in the mail  like clockwork. And, for the sake of your credit history, it’s very important to stay on top of these payments.

On your statements, you’ll notice there is a new balance and a minimum payment due, along with a date by which to pay. Depending on your financial situation, you may be tempted to pay the minimum amount due instead of wiping out a larger portion, or all, of this month’s balance. While this keeps your account from accumulating a late fee or slipping into delinquency, it’s not a sustainable habit.

Understanding credit card minimum payments can help you decide the best amount to pay.

Here are three common misconceptions to get you started.

Myth #1: All credit card minimums are the same.
Credit card minimums are not universal. You’ll need to check your cardholder agreement to
discover exactly how your issuer calculates yours. If you have multiple cards across a handful of credit card companies, you will likely notice a difference in the minimum calculations.

Some card issuers charge a small percentage of the account balance, typically between one to three percent. Other companies charge a percentage of the current balance, plus accrued interest and late fees. Sometimes you’ll owe a low flat fee, like $15 or $25. Again, the best way to determine how much you’ll owe on your balance is to look at the fine print in the terms of the card in question.

Myth #2: Paying the minimum stops interest from accruing.
While paying the minimum does press pause on late fees and account delinquency, it does not stop interest from building up in the background. In fact, as NerdWallet points out, sometimes making the minimum payment will “barely wipe out last month’s interest.”

In this way, continuously compounding interest can turn your balance into a treadmill — you’re “running” constantly but never getting ahead, financially speaking.

Myth #3: Paying the minimum is an effective way to eliminate debt.
Perhaps the most dangerous misconception, thinking paying the minimum can put a real dent in your debt is a mistake. While it’s definitely better than paying nothing, it tends to
significantly draw out the amount of time and money it takes to satisfy a debt.

Say you’re facing down a $1,500 credit card balance with an annual percentage rate (APR) of 18percent. Your minimum payment is $30, or two percent of the total balance. It’ll take 231months — nearly 20 years — to pay off the balance completely, making only the minimum payment due, according to a Bankrate calculator. Even more horrifying is the fact you’ll end up paying nearly $4,400 when all is said and done, thanks to the interest you allowed to flourish during that time span.

Now let’s compare this tactic to other debt repayment strategies. Debt consolidation loans
typically operate on fixed payments for 24 to 60 months. A debt relief program can address
debt in 24 to 48 months, although the exact timeline depends on the amount of debt enrolled and the settlement agreements reached. Debt management programs generally last three to five years. Even do-it-yourself debt repayment tends to go much faster than paying the minimum because you’re throwing your money at your debts systematically to chip away at it.

It’s nice to have the option to pay the credit card minimum when money is tight, but it’s best not to do so. As you can see from myth busting these misconceptions, it’s an expensive and long-lasting way to tackle debt.

Over half of US Christians believe good works will get them into Heaven: study

Less than half of U.S. Christians expect to experience eternal salvation because of their confession of sin and acceptance of Christ as their Savior, while a larger number of professing Christians believe good works will get them into Heaven, a new survey has found.

The American Worldview Inventory 2020 survey conducted by the Cultural Research Center at Arizona Christian University found that a majority of people who describe themselves as Christian (52%) accept a “works-oriented” means to God’s acceptance.

In contrast, a minority of adults (46%) who describe themselves as “Christian” expect to experience eternal salvation because of their confession of sin and acceptance of Christ as their savior.

The study also found that “huge proportions of people” associated with churches whose official doctrine says eternal salvation comes only from embracing Jesus Christ as savior “believe that a person can qualify for Heaven by being or doing good.” That includes close to half of all adults associated with Pentecostal (46%), mainline Protestant (44%), and evangelical (41%) churches. A much larger share of Catholics (70%)…

‘Not the America I’ve known’: Pastor John MacArthur doubles down on COVID-19 defiance

Pastor John MacArthur of Grace Community Church in Sun Valley, California, is defying state orders that his church remain shuttered during the ongoing coronavirus pandemic — and the move is sparking intense discussion and debate.

The preacher spoke about his decision in a recent episode of the “Edifi With Billy Hallowell” podcast, explaining that Grace Community Church initially complied with California’s restrictions before changing course in recent weeks.

“I’ve been here 50 years; the church is 63 years old, and this church has never had any kind of mandate from the government to close,” MacArthur said. “So when they came up with this mandate it seemed to be so rare and so unusual that we were listening.”

Upon hearing dire predictions about the death toll, MacArthur said it was “enough to make anybody with common sense” pause and take steps to ensure no one was endangered. The church initially moved to a live stream model and closed down in-person services — but within a few weeks, MacArthur said parishioners started showing up again.

Listen to MacArthur explain why his church is defying orders:

“They were beginning to realize that it wasn’t what they said it was going to be,” he said of the COVID-19 impact, estimating that about…

Summit Church to meet in homes for rest of 2020 due to COVID-19: JD Greear explains why

Southern Baptist Convention President J.D. Greear speaks at the SBC Annual Meeting in Birmingham, Alabama, on June 11, 2019. | LifeWay

The Summit Church, a Southern Baptist congregation in Durham, North Carolina, whose pastor is the denomination’s president, won’t be holding services for the remainder of the year due to COVID-19. Instead, they will be hosting small home-based gatherings in a push toward making disciples.

In recently posted guidelines on its website, the church noted that the central idea “is to equip you to be the church in your homes, in your communities, and online in order for you to continue being disciple-making disciples. So even when you can’t come to church, you can still be the church.”

Greear said he believes the shift toward home-based gatherings amid the pandemic is rooted in loving one’s neighbor.

“In North Carolina, our state has done a good job of respecting the First Amendment right of churches,” Greear told The Christian Post. “We’ve also learned from other churches exercising responsibility in the decisions they are making in regards to their own gatherings. Our church has used state guidelines to inform our decisions in order to protect our congregation and…

“Absolute chaos in downtown Chicago”: Why a “theology of exile” is empowering for Christians today

Chicago police shot and wounded a young man Sunday afternoon after he fired at them while trying to evade arrest. Though he was in his twenties, a rumor spread in the neighborhood that officers had shot a child. A mob then laid siege to Chicago’s downtown commercial district.

Stores were looted and windows were smashed. Two people were shot, thirteen police officers were injured, and more than one hundred arrests were made. The city then halted public transportation and raised the bridges that lead to downtown. Access was restricted to the area again last night.

“Absolute chaos in downtown Chicago,” one reporter wrote on Twitter

The night before the riots in Chicago, a seventeen-year-old in Washington, DC, was killed in a shooting and twenty others were injured. Meanwhile, according to the New York Post, New York City is on track to have more shootings and victims this year than in 2019 and 2018 combined

A radio question

If you don’t live in Chicago, New York City, or Washington, DC, you might shrug your shoulders at today’s news with gratitude that you don’t live in these cities. But in a very real sense, you do. So do I.

What we need is a biblical approach to our broken culture that balances grief and hope.

I was interviewed by Kim Weir for her radio broadcast Sunday night. At one point, she asked me to address the discouragement so many evangelicals feel with the moral trajectory of our culture. As she knows, it is tempting to withdraw from the world, to stop caring about people who don’t seem to care about us or our biblical convictions.

But this is precisely the wrong way for believers to respond to the issues of our day.

Why we are “elect exiles”

1 Peter 1 begins: “Peter, an apostle of Jesus Christ, To those who are…

Franklin Graham Invites Christians to Attend Prayer March in Washington D.C.

Franklin Graham Invites Christians to Attend Prayer March in Washington D.C.

In a video announcement posted to Twitter on Saturday, Evangelist Franklin Graham encouraged fellow Christians to mark their calendars for a September prayer march.

“I’m announcing today that on Sept. 26, I’m going to be in our nation’s capital to pray – & I hope thousands of families, pastors, & churches will join me,” Graham, the son of the late Billy Graham, captioned the video.

“Our nation is in trouble, & we need God’s help,” he urged.

In the video announcement, Graham shared that the prayer march will start at noon at the Lincoln Memorial and marchers will walk the length of the national mall.

“I hope that you’ll join me on the 26th of September. Noon, okay? And we’re gonna march from one end of this mall to the other, it’ll take us about two hours,” Graham said.

“We’re gonna pray for this nation. Our only hope for this country is God,” he added.

Prestonwood Baptist Church Pastor Jack Graham, no relation to Franklin Graham, offered support for the march on Twitter and invited all…

Satanic Temple to Raffle Free Abortion to Promote Challenges to Abortion Laws

Satanic Temple to Raffle Free Abortion to Promote Challenges to Abortion Laws

The Satanic Temple (TST) recently announced that they are raffling a free abortion to promote their “religious abortion ritual” and as part of an effort to fund their planned challenges to state abortion laws.

According to CBN News, TST claims that abortion is a vital part of its seven tenets, particularly tenet three which says that “One’s body is inviolable, subject to one’s own will alone” and tenet five, which states that, “Beliefs should conform to one’s best scientific understanding of the world. One should take care never to distort facts to fit one’s beliefs.”

Recently, TST has asserted that its members are exempt from state laws that might block access to abortion during the first trimester because it violates their religious rights.

They say the members’ religious rights are exempt from state laws that might block access to abortion during the first trimester, LifeNews reports. TST describes abortion as a “Spiritual experience designed to instill confidence and self-worth in accordance to TST’s religious beliefs.” Because of this, they argue that their members should not be subject to mandatory waiting periods, counseling, nonvoluntary viewing of sonograms, and/or reading material.

TST, which was founded in 2012 and claims to have 300,000 members, appeals to court rulings like the 2014 Hobby Lobby case to argue for their members’…

Appeals Court OKs Ban on ‘Dismemberment Abortion,’ Citing John Roberts

Appeals Court OKs Ban on ‘Dismemberment Abortion,’ Citing John Roberts

A federal appeals court on Friday lifted an injunction against four Arkansas pro-life laws and indicated they are constitutional in light of a recent opinion by Chief Justice John Roberts that was widely criticized by social conservatives.

The four laws, including one that bans a common late-term procedure pro-lifers dub “dismemberment abortion,” were blocked in 2017 by U.S. District Judge Kristine Baker.

But on Friday, a three-judge panel of the U.S. Eighth Circuit Court of Appeals unanimously vacated Baker’s ruling and ordered her to reconsider the laws “in light of Chief Justice Roberts’s separate opinion” in a June abortion ruling.

Jerry Cox, president of the Arkansas-based Family Council, praised the appeals court’s decision.

“Prohibiting these dismemberment abortions will save the lives of hundreds of babies every year, and it will protect women from an abortion procedure that carries a number of risks,” Cox said.

The four laws in question:

  • ban dilation and evacuation, an abortion procedure in which the unborn baby is torn apart, limb by limb, in the womb.
  • ban sex-selection abortion.
  • require doctors to preserve fetal tissue when performing an abortion on a minor 16 years or younger for possible forensic use.
  • places new restrictions on the disposal of fetal remains.

In the June 29 decision, Roberts joined the liberal bloc to rule against a Louisiana pro-life…

Evangelicals Voting for Biden Have ‘Sold Their Soul to the Devil,’ Pastor Robert Jeffress Asserts

Evangelicals Voting for Biden Have ‘Sold Their Soul to the Devil,’ Pastor Robert Jeffress Asserts

Pastor Robert Jeffress of First Baptist Dallas offered some strong words about evangelicals who plan to vote for Joe Biden on November 3rd.

In an interview with Fox Business’ Lou Dobbs, Jeffress was asked to share his thoughts on faith voters being courted by Biden’s campaign just a few months shy of the 2020 presidential election.

According to Christian Today, Jeffress responded that “there’s not a snowball’s chance … of Joe Biden gaining any significant evangelical vote at all.”

“The only evangelicals who are going to vote for Joe Biden are those who have sold their soul to the devil and accepted the Democrats’ barbaric position on abortion,” Jeffress asserted.

“I mean, it’s so barbaric, Joe Biden believes in unrestricted abortion. He can’t even get his own church, the Catholic Church, to stomach it. They have denied him communion because of that,” the pastor added.

Jeffress, a frequent Fox News contributor and staunch Trump supporter, went on to cite a recent Pew Research poll that showed that “82 percent white evangelicals are gonna vote for President Trump on Nov. 3.”

Only 17 percent of white evangelical Protestant registered to vote said they would or are likely to vote for Biden.

“I think the number’s gonna be higher than that,” Jeffress said, talking about the number of faith votes Trump will get.

Following the 2016 Presidential election, Pew…

Extreme poverty rises and a generation sees future slip away – Urban Christian News

Mother of two Amsale Hailemariam, a domestic worker who lost work because of the coronavirus, stands in her small tent in the capital Addis Ababa, Ethiopia on Friday, June 26, 2020. Decades of progress in one of modern history’s greatest achievements, the fight against extreme poverty, are now in danger of slipping away due to the coronavirus and the world could see the first global increase in extreme poverty in 22 years, further sharpening inequality. (AP Photo/Mulugeta Ayene)

ADDIS ABABA, Ethiopia (AP) — As a domestic worker, Amsale Hailemariam knew from the inside out the luxury villas that had grown up around her simple shelter of raw metal and plastic sheeting. And in them, she saw how her country, Ethiopia, had transformed.

The single mother told herself, “Oh God, a day will come when my life will be changed, too.” The key lay in her daughter, just months from a career in public health, who studied how to battle the illnesses of want and hunger.

Then a virus mentioned in none of her textbooks arrived, and dreams faded for families, and entire countries, like theirs. Decades of progress in one of modern history’s greatest achievements, the fight against extreme poverty, are in danger of slipping away because of the COVID-19 pandemic. The world could see its first increase in extreme poverty in 22 years, further sharpening social inequities.

“We are living in a state where we are above the dead and below the living,” Amsale said, near tears. “This is not life.”

With the virus and its restrictions, up to 100 million more people globally could fall into the…
