It’s been 100 years since women won the right to vote: Have we since achieved “a more perfect union”?

In this year of far-reaching social change, August marks the hundredth anniversary of an often-overlooked chapter in American history yet an essential part of our quest to form what the Constitution calls “a more perfect union.”

On August 18, 1920, Tennessee became the thirty-sixth state to ratify the Nineteenth Amendment, giving women the right to vote in all elections. Eight days later, the US secretary of state officially pronounced the amendment the law of the land.

The story of the struggle for the vote features themes of politics, protest, race, and religion that still resonate today. In fact, historians credit the Second Great Awakening, a revival in the late eighteenth and early nineteenth centuries, with inspiring social reform in areas such as women’s rights, abolition, and temperance.

Women’s suffrage was a “too radical” resolution

Women’s legal rights had been “pretty much nonexistent,” said Dr. Beverly Zink-Sawyer, author of From Preachers to Suffragists: Woman’s Rights and Religious Conviction in the Lives of Three Nineteenth-Century American Clergywomen

“Single women could inherit property, but once a woman married, all that she ‘owned’ (including her children) became the property of her husband.  In divorce, she could be left penniless and have her children taken away from her. There were some exceptions to this in native communities—and, of course, the situation was even worse for enslaved women.”

The suffrage movement formally began on July 19, 1848, with the Seneca Falls Convention in central New York. Some three hundred people attended, including Black abolitionist Frederick Douglass. Many of the early crusaders for women’s rights were also abolitionists, including convention organizers Elizabeth Cady Stanton and…

Evangelicals For Trump Host Las Vegas Rally in Casino amid Restrictions on Houses of Worship

Evangelicals For Trump Host Las Vegas Rally in Casino amid Restrictions on Houses of Worship

The state of Nevada is reprimanding Evangelicals for Trump for hosting an event inside a casino in an attempt to evade restrictions imposed on houses of worship.

According to the Las Vegas Review-Journal, the event was held last Thursday night inside the Ahern Hotel. More than 500 evangelicals were in attendance inside the hotel’s lobby. The hotel’s maximum capacity is 1,600 people.

Evangelicals For Trump took advantage of Ahern Hotel as the state allows hotels and casinos to follow an up to 50 percent capacity rule, whereas churches can only have a maximum of 50 people in attendance at each service.

Thursday’s event included special guests such as Trump’s faith advisor Paula White, who leads the White House’s Faith and Opportunity Initiative.

Members of Trump’s evangelical advisory board were also present, including Pastor Jentezen Franklin and Bishop Harry Jackson Jr., as well as Pastor Jack Hibbs of Calvary Chapel Chino Hills, California.

A video from the event was posted to Twitter by Ralph Reed, Chair of the Faith and Freedom Coalition. The 23-second clip shows hundreds of attendees singing aloud in praise and worship.

“Packed house at #EvangelicalsForTrump prayer & praise event in Las Vegas,” Reed tweeted. “NV Governor banned church services, but casinos can operate at 50% capacity. So we are praying in a casino,” he added.

John MacArthur Sunday service: ‘Welcome’ to the ‘peaceful protest;’ preaches on obedience to Scripture

John MacArthur speaks at Grace Community Church, a megachurch in Sun Valley, California, on Sunday, August 9, 2020. | Grace Community Church

Pastor John MacArthur, whose California church is holding in-person services in violation of the state’s COVID-19 health orders, opened his most recent sermon by welcoming his congregation to “the Grace Community Church peaceful protest.”

“Good morning, everyone. I’m so happy to welcome you to the Grace Community Church peaceful protest,” MacArthur, senior pastor of Grace Community Church, a megachurch in Sun Valley, California, said Sunday morning, drawing cheers and applause from worshipers.

MacArthur went on to explain that, “based on the Word of God,” his church is “pro-life, pro-family, pro-law and order, and pro-church of the Lord Jesus Christ.”

The preacher then invited a chaplain from the Los Angeles Police Department to deliver the service’s opening prayer. The chaplain prayed that MacArthur and his congregation would have the “wisdom and faith to weather all of the things going on in church and outside church.”

MacArthur preached from 1 Corinthians 1, which reads in part, “For the foolishness of God is wiser than…

Thousands of Christian Gather in Portland for ‘Riots to Revival’ Worship Event

Thousands of Christian Gather in Portland for ‘Riots to Revival’ Worship Event

While a riot went on in one part of Portland and a fire was started at a city police union building, thousands of Christians gathered in another part of the city to sing worship music this past weekend.

According to Fox News, worshippers met in Waterfront Park Saturday evening for “Riots to Revival,” featuring Christian musician Sean Feucht. Feucht has previously hosted similar worship gatherings in California despite COVID-19 restrictions.

A local news station reported that most people at the Portland worship gathering did not wear masks or follow social distancing advice.

Feucht said between 4,000 and 7,000 people attended the outdoor church gathering over the weekend.

“White, Black, Hispanic – we came and released our song of hope over this city. People gave their life to Jesus. Hundreds of people – We baptized people in the river behind us. There was so much joy that took over the streets of that city last night,” he said.

“Our tagline last night was ‘Riots to Revival,’ which we’re carrying with us into Seattle tonight. We just believe that the church has the ability to change the narrative. All of America has just seen these buildings burning, and they’ve seen this destruction and this violence, and the mainstream media seems to be infatuated with this. But what I’m telling you is that there’s another story of what God is doing in these cities and…

‘I Pointed Him to Jesus’: Phil Robertson Says He and Trump Always Discuss ‘Spiritual Matters’

‘I Pointed Him to Jesus’: Phil Robertson Says He and Trump Always Discuss ‘Spiritual Matters’

The patriarch of the Duck Dynasty family says spiritual issues always are at the center of his discussions with President Trump.

Phil Robertson, who starred in the popular reality show series Duck Dynasty (2012-2017) and endorsed Trump during the 2016 general election, made the comments on Fox News while discussing his new book, Jesus Politics: How to Win Back the Soul of America.

“I met with him three times since he was running – the second time via telephone. … The three times I’ve been with him, this was at the center of our discussion,” Robertson said, holding up a Bible for the camera. “I pointed him to Jesus. We talked spiritual matters all three times.”

Robertson appeared on Fox News’ Watters’ World two days after Trump and his Democratic opponent, Joe Biden, engaged in a back-and-forth about God, faith and the Democratic party.

Asked about the role of religion in modern-day politics, Robertson said, “Well, if you look at it logically, viewing it through a spiritual lens, you’ve got the devil on one hand, you got Jesus on the other. And those two forces are coming together. And if you punch the wrong button and go with the wrong person, there’s either hell on Earth or there’s peace of mind. Jesus – peace of mind. Karl Marx and his adherents – hell on Earth. That’s where we are.”

Robertson said his new book, Jesus Politics, is a…

To Cope with Pandemic, Americans Choose Binge-Watching TV Over the Bible

To Cope with Pandemic, Americans Choose Binge-Watching TV Over the Bible

(RNS) — When it comes to coping with the stress and uncertainty of a pandemic, most Americans are turning not to God, but to TV.

That’s just one of the findings of a Pew Research Center survey released Friday (Aug. 7) on how the novel coronavirus pandemic has impacted the worship habits of Americans.

Pew surveyed 10,211 American adults online between July 13 and 19.

Here’s what the nonpartisan fact tank found.

TV is our best friend.

To help them cope with the pandemic, most Americans said they are staying home to watch Netflix and chill: 89% reported that they are watching TV or movies daily or weekly. This includes 90% of all Christians, 87% of Jews and 88% of the religiously unaffiliated, according to Pew.

Many Americans (84%) also are spending time outdoors or talking by phone or video with family and friends (70%), the survey said.

But fewer are turning to their faith for support.

More than half (55%) reported praying at least weekly, followed by reading Scripture (29%), meditating (26%) and practicing yoga (8%, despite the popularity of YouTube’s Yoga with Adriene in quarantine).

Those most likely to seek comfort in spirituality at least once a week — prayer, Scripture reading and meditation — are members of historically Black Protestant churches, followed by evangelical Protestants.

Churches shouldn’t get exceptions.

Months into the pandemic, some houses of worship are…

Jerry Falwell to Take an Indefinite Leave of Absence from Liberty University

Jerry Falwell to Take an Indefinite Leave of Absence from Liberty University

Liberty University, one of the largest Christian universities in the United States, announced Friday afternoon that president Jerry Falwell, Jr. will be taking an indefinite leave of absence.

According to a statement from the university, the Board of Trustees’ Executive Committee met on Friday and determined that Falwell should “take an indefinite leave of absence from his roles as President and Chancellor of Liberty University.” The leave of absence will be made effective immediately.

While the board did not provide a reason for this decision, Liberty University board member Rev. Dwight “Ike” Reighard, reportedly told Religion News Service in an email that he was “concerned” about “recent events.”

The board issued statement, he added, addresses only “the beginning steps the University Board will more fully address in the days ahead.”

“We all would appreciate your prayers for the right things to happen in the days ahead for our wonderful University,” Reighard added.

The news comes just days after Falwell apologized for posting a photo to Instagram of himself with a woman, identified by The Christian Post as his wife’s assistant, with their pants unzipped and their stomachs out.

He captioned the photo, in part, “Lots of good friends visited us on the yacht … I promise that’s just black water in my glass. It was a prop only.”

Pastor David Platt asks for prayers after pandemic delays adoption of son

David Platt speaks at the Secret Church event on Friday, April 26, 2019. | Leah Klett/The Christian Post

As the coronavirus pandemic has halted most adoptions from outside the U.S., megachurch pastor and author David Platt is asking Christians to pray that their third adopted child, who turned 4 on Sunday, would come into their family soon.

“Today was my son’s 4th birthday. But I haven’t met him yet. We were 5 days away from going overseas to adopt him when travel to his country shut down in early February,” Platt, the lead pastor of McLean Bible Church in Vienna, Virginia, wrote on Twitter.

“For the last 6 months, I’ve been pleading every single day for a way to go to him. As a dad, I would do anything possible to make that happen,” continued the author of Radical.

Platt, who at one point was the youngest megachurch pastor in the United States, added, “I woke up this morning to new pictures of him in his orphanage, and then I read the first verse that just so happened to be in my Bible reading plan. ‘Jesus told them a parable to the effect that they ought always to pray and not lose heart’ — Luke 18:1.”

The former leader of the Southern Baptist Convention’s…

Who should Joe Biden nominate for VP? Three biblical commitments we owe his selection

Democratic presidential candidate former Vice President Joe Biden speaks at a campaign event at the William “Hicks” Anderson Community Center in Wilmington, Del., Tuesday, July 28, 2020.(AP Photo/Andrew Harnik)

Joe Biden is expected to announce his running mate this week. Reportedly, Sen. Kamala Harris (D-Calif.) and Susan Rice, national security advisor to President Obama, are the top contenders. Either would make history as the first Black woman to be a vice-presidential candidate for a major party.

Biden is reportedly also considering Rep. Karen Bass of California, Rep. Val Demings of Florida, Michigan Gov. Gretchen Whitmer, and Sen. Tammy Duckworth of Illinois.

Four factors seem to be at work:

  • Age: Biden would be the oldest president ever elected if he wins in November, so some want him to choose a running mate who is younger and can be the future of the party.
  • Balance: some perceive Biden to be too moderate for the progressive wing of the party and want him to select a nominee that will excite these voters.
  • Demographics: some want him to select a Black candidate to gain support among Black voters.
  • Politics: as one politics professor notes, “the vice-presidential candidate can help a little or hurt a lot.” He would advise candidates, “Above all, do no harm.”

My purpose this morning is not to help Mr. Biden make his decision, but rather to discuss our reaction once he makes it.

Where are you on this spectrum?

You are likely approaching the upcoming election in one of eight ways on a political spectrum from “right” to “left.”

  1. You believe Joe Biden is wrong for America and will vote for his opponent.
  2. You believe Donald Trump is right for America and will vote for him.
  3. You believe Republican policies—such as the party’s positions on abortion and religious liberty—are right and will therefore vote for Donald Trump despite personal misgivings about him.
  4. You support Republican policies but believe Donald Trump is…
