Mexican Priests, Christians Fighting Pessimism amidst Trying Times

Mexican priests and the Christian faithful are trying “not to fall into pessimism” as the country struggles to deal with the presumed murder of 43 students involving corrupt police officers, which has sparked nationwide protests and heavy police reform.

“The country is experiencing difficult times, perhaps a crisis of confidence in society, in the authorities, there are many doubts. However, there are priests and faithful who are looking for solutions, in order not to fall into pessimism,” said The Apostolic Nuncio in Mexico, Archbishop Christophe Pierre, according to Fides News Agency.

Pierre spoke of the need to create a new commission in Mexico focused on justice, peace and reconciliation, and argued that “protesting without proposing anything is sterile.”

He added, “I like to see that the Catholic Church is part of society, expresses its solidarity with those who suffer, but must also feel the responsibility to find solutions to offer a way out.”

Forty-three students were kidnapped in September and handed over to the Guerreros Unidos drug cartel by corrupt police officers. Families have refused to give up hope that some of the students are still alive, but Mexican authorities have said that they are most likely dead, and have discovered burned bodies near the scene of the kidnapping.

The incident sparked outrage across the country, which has seen as many as 22,000 people disappear in the drug war since 2006. Protesters in several cities demanded change, and President Enrique Pena Nieto responded by announcing that corruption-plagued local police forces will be dissolved.

“Society has raised its voice to say enough is enough,” Pena Nieto said at the end of November.

“Mexico must change,” the president added.

The Roman Catholic Church, the largest Christian body in Mexico, called for an end to corruption.

“Respectfully and energetically, we ask the authorities to take the investigation to its final consequences so that it’s known with certainty what has happened with the disappeared, and the intellectual authors … are punished with the full weight of the law,” the Mexican Bishops conference said in a statement in November.

“At the same time, we demand the enforcing of the rule of law to put an end to all forms of violence, illicit activities, corruption, impunity and the complicity of some authorities with organized crime.”

U.S. President Barack Obama, meanwhile, said the U.S. has offered its assistance in the investigation for the 43 missing students. Such kidnappings, he said, have “no place in civilized society.”

Obama told Telemundo, the Spanish-language television network: “We’ve offered assistance in tracking down exactly what happened, our forensic capabilities, our capacity to get to the bottom of exactly what happened.

“We’ve got to make sure that we strengthen the criminal justice system, the investigative capacities. Mexico is our friend and our neighbor. We want them to thrive.”

Official Ownership of Syrian Bibles Sought by Israeli Library

Israel’s National Library has asked a court there for official ownership of nine bibles, which the Israeli intelligence agency took from the Jewish community in the Syrian capital of Damascus twenty years ago.

The Bibles, known as the Crowns of Damascus, were written between 700 and 1000 years ago. They were owned by the Jewish community in Damascus for hundreds of years.

The manuscripts feature ornate decorations of tiny letters (micography), and gold-leaf highlights.

Mossad, the Israeli intelligence agency, took them in the 1990s. They kept their move secret for more than a decade.

Rabbi Avraham Hamra, the leader of the Damascus Jewish community at the time, helped Mossad take the Crowns.

However Rabbi Hamra is now challenging Israel’s ownership bid, because of what he says is a broken promise.

He says Israel promised to build a Syrian-Jewish centre in the country, where the Crowns of Damascus would be kept. This centre has still not been built, and given the National Library’s official application for ownership, this amounts to Israel breaking a promise, according to Rabbi Hamra.

Israel denies making such a promise.

Hamra also says the Crowns are the “religious and spiritual treasure of the Syrian Jewish community.”

A lawyer working for the National Library says it will advertise its bid for official ownership of the Crowns of Damascus in Syria, Europe and the US, so anyone against the proposal can legally challenge it.

The government in Damascus has not commented on the situation.

Three Iranian Christians get Appeal Hearing

A second court session has been held in Iran as two pastors and a deacon continue their appeal against six-year sentences for political charges.

Pastors Behnam Irani and Matthias Haghnejad, and Deacon Silas Rabbani, who had earlier had capital charges against them dropped, each received six-year sentences in October.

They are accused of “action against the state” and “action against the order”.

In court their lawyer Moshkani Farahani, who had previously argued against the charges faced by each of his clients at the last court session of this trial on 24 November, said they should be released.

During the previous session, Mr Farahani argued that it was inconceivable that Behnam Irani could have been guilty of the political crimes given that he was already imprisoned.

He went on to state that Matthias Haghnejad should be released on the basis that he had previously been acquitted of charges by a tribunal in Bandar-Anzali.

Mr Farahani also contended that people cannot be sentenced on political charges for simply belonging to a religious fellowship.

He told the court: “It is normal for members of minorities to be in touch with each other; Jews are in touch which others, Zoroastrians are in touch with each other, it is the same for Assyrians, Orthodoxes and Evangelicals. Such connections cannot be perceived as a penal crime.”

Christian Solidarity Worldwide Chief Executive Mervyn Thomas said, “The charges faced by Pastors Behnam Irani, Matthias Haghnejad and Deacon Silas Rabbani are clearly unjust, as Mr Farahani has argued in court.

“We continue to call on the authorities to release these clergymen along with Ebrahim Hosseinzadeh, unconditionally and without delay.

“Their only ‘crime’ is to exercise their right to freedom of religion or belief, as guaranteed in the International Covenant of Civil and Political Rights, to which Iran is signatory.

“We urge the Iranian government to uphold this right for religious minorities in Iran, in line with its obligations under international law and the provisions upholding the rights of religious minorities in its own constitution.”

US President Quotes Nonexistent Bible Verse while Delivering Immigration Speech

President Obama delivered a speech on immigration Tuesday (Dec. 9) where he quoted the “good book.” However, part of what the President said is not in scripture.

“The good book says don’t throw stones at glass houses, or make sure we’re looking at the log in our eye before we are pointing out the mote in other folks eyes,” Obama said in the speech.

The Washington Post reports that the expression “they that live in glass houses should not throw stones” is not a Bible verse, but a proverb of unknown origin.

The second part of Obama’s statement is taken from Matthew 7:1-3 which says, “Do not judge, so that you may not be judged. For with the judgment you make you will be judged, and the measure you give will be the measure you get. Why do you see the speck in your neighbor’s eye, but do not notice the log in your own eye?Why do you see the speck in your neighbor’s eye, but do not notice the log in your own eye? Or how can you say to your neighbor, ‘Let me take the speck out of your eye,’ while the log is in your own eye? You hypocrite, first take the log out of your own eye, and then you will see clearly to take the speck out of your neighbor’s eye.”

Also in the speech, Obama compared immigration to the Christmas story saying, “If we’re serious about the Christmas season, now is the time to reflect on those who are strangers in our midst and remember what it was like to be a stranger.”

This statement was criticised by some because Mary and Joseph were travelling to Joseph’s native land when there was no room at the inn; they were not illegal immigrants. Also, the reason Mary and Joseph travelled to Bethlehem was to follow the law and return to Joseph’s homeland for a census.

Operation Christmas Child :Displaced Iraqi Children to Receive 60,000 Gift-Filled Shoeboxes from Franklin Graham

The evangelical humanitarian organization Samaritan’s Purse airlifted over 60,000 gift-filled shoeboxes on Wednesday to the Kurdish-controlled region of Northern Iraq, intending to provide hope to children living as refugees after they were forced to flee their homes to escape from the wrath of the Islamic State.

Through Operation Christmas Child, a program run by evangelist Franklin Graham and his Samaritan’s Purse organization, people from all over the United States, United Kingdom and Canada have combined efforts to fill up 60,000 shoeboxes with small gifts and uplifting messages, which will be flown from Baltimore-Washington International Airport to the city of Erbil in Iraqi Kurdistan.

With Samaritan’s Purse already supporting a major refugee camp in the town by airlifting supplies in October, the Operation Christmas Child airlift is the second that Samaritan’s Purse has conducted to support the refugees living in Iraq.

The shoeboxes will not only be distributed by local partners to the kids living in the Samaritan’s Purse-supported refugee camp, but will also be distributed to the refugee children in the neighboring areas of Dohuk, Operation Christmas Child Domestic Director Randy Riddle told The Christian Post in a Wednesday interview.

Some typical gifts that are included in the shoeboxes are school supplies, hygienic needs, hard candy, balls for boys, baby dolls for girls, t-shirts, socks, jewelry, sunglasses and other small items that can fit inside of a shoebox.

“Many of these children have never received a gift in their lives and that was when they were living in their normal circumstances [before the ISIS takeover],” Riddle said. “Now, they have been removed from everything that they know: their homes and their families. They are living in the refugee camp and these gifts will provide a moment of hope. Of course, they will be delivered in the name of Jesus.”

The operation also encourages its donors to include a photograph of themselves and an encouraging letter reminding the kids that they are still loved by God.

“These children will be reminded that there is a God who loves them. That is the point and the purpose of Operation Christmas Child, is to share the love of Jesus Christ,” Riddle said. “We see it as opportunities to share the gospel and we want these children to know that they are loved by not only from people [all over the world] but there is a God who loves them, and that will be the message that these children will hear.”

Although many of the people living in refugee camps are no longer being threatened by the Islamic State, they have sub-par living conditions with a cold winter approaching. The refugees are living in tents, and with the fact that many were forced to leave all their possessions behind, including winter clothing, the cold weather could present real issues for them.

In October, another Samaritan’s Purse airlift sent 80 tons of aid supplies including heaters and winter coats to Iraqi refugees to help keep them warm.

“Most of them are living in tents without floors. Samaritan’s purse has provided a large number of heaters and winter coats. They are doing the best that they can in a tent community, a tent city,” Riddle said. “These shoeboxes will just be additional forms of encouragement. These conditions are difficult. We are unable to change their permanent condition but we are able to provide a moment of hope and a reminder that these children are loved.”

With over 60,000 shoeboxes being distributed in this one airlift, Riddle says Operation Christmas Child plans to deliver over 10 million more shoeboxes to underprivileged children worldwide. He explained that over 8 million of the shoeboxes will be donated by families and individuals inside the U.S., while the remaining 2 million shoeboxes will come from donors in U.K., Canada, Australia, Germany, Holland and Finland.

Ugandan Preacher on Trial for Role in Anti-Gay Law

Anti-gay preacher Scott Lively will face trial for crimes against humanity for his role in influencing the Ugandan Anti-Homosexuality Act (AHA).

A Boston Court of Appeals last week denied Lively’s petition to have the case dismissed. It will now proceed in federal court.

Lively, who is president of Abiding Truth Ministries, recently described homosexuality as an “infection” and worse than mass murder. He has also accused gay people of being “agents of America’s moral decline,” and co-authored ‘The Pink Swastika’, a book which contends that “homosexuals [are] the true inventors of Nazism and the guiding force behind many Nazi atrocities.”

A lawsuit was originally filed against Lively in March 2012 by the Centre for Constitutional Rights (CCR) on behalf of umbrella advocacy group Sexual Minorities Uganda. He is accused of direct involvement in anti-gay efforts in Uganda and therefore of aiding persecution – a violation of international law.

Of particular concern was a visit to Uganda in 2009, during which Lively addressed influential leaders and spoke on what he calls “the gay agenda”.

In 2012, Lively defended himself, saying: “I’ve never done anything in Uganda except preach the Gospel and speak my opinion about the homosexual issue.”

Lawyer Pamela C Spees of the CCR said that the case is “not just based on his speech”.

“It’s based on his conduct,” she said. “Belief is one thing, but actively trying to harm and deprive other people of their rights is the definition of persecution.”

The AHA came into force in Uganda in March of this year, and human rights organisations such as Amnesty subsequently documented a sharp increase in arbitrary arrests, police abuse and extortion against lesbian, gay, bisexual, transgender, and intersex people.

However, though the African nation’s penal code continues to criminalise “carnal knowledge of any person against the order of nature”, Uganda’s Constitutional Court ruled in August that the Act was “null and void” because not enough representatives were in the room for the vote when it was passed by parliament in December 2013.

Several other Christian leaders have recently faced criticism for anti-gay comments. Pastor Logan Robertson of the Westcity Bible Baptist Church in New Zealand said this week that all gay people “should be put to death” and told a gay Christian author that he was praying for him to commit suicide.

Protests have also been held against Steven Anderson of the Faithful Word Baptist Church in Arizona who gave a sermon on November 30 in which he accused all gay people of paedophilia, and said executing gay people was a God-sanctioned way to rid the world of AIDS.

Actor plays Jesus and the Devil in New Film

Ewan McGregor plays both Jesus and the devil in a new independent film ‘Last Days in the Desert’.

The film, directed by Rodrigo Garcia (Albert Nobbs), was announced last February, when it was described as a struggle between ‘a holy man and a demon’.

It wasn’t until the list of premieres at the Sundance Film Festival was released yesterday that it became clear that the ‘holy man’ was in fact Jesus.

Yeshua, the Hebrew name for Jesus used in the film, is tempted by the devil in an “imagined chapter” from his 40 days of prayer and fasting in the desert.

In an interview for Time magazine, McGregor said he didn’t think the film would be controversial.

“There’s nothing possibly that could upset people, other than the very nature of imagining a story with Jesus that doesn’t exist in the Scripture,” he said. “There’s nothing offensive. I’m not worried about it, because I believe very much in the heart of the film we made.”

However, the Scottish actor admitted that the role had initially been a daunting prospect. In order to prepare, McGregor said he imagined the father-son relationship between Christ and God the Father.

“I thought, Okay, he’s a man who’s struggling to communicate with his dad,” McGregor said. “I felt actually the pressure come off myself. I’m not playing Jesus; I’m playing a man whose dad is God and he’s trying to speak to his dad. It’s really a film about the relationship between fathers and their sons. In every scene of the film, that’s at the heart of it.”

Speaking of the devil character in the film, McGregor said he could be seen “as another side of Yeshua perhaps, an embodiment of his doubt.”

Other cast include Ciarán Hinds, Ayelet Zurer and Tye Sheridan. Sundance, which begins on January 22, is one of the largest independent film festivals in the United States.

CAN President- Oritsejafor, “Why Nigerians Are Experiencing Insurgency”

Pastor Ayo Oritsejafor, the President of the Christian Association of Nigeria (CAN), has said Nigerians are pretenders and that is why they are still experiencing insurgency.

Speaking at the Northern State Christian Elders Forum (NOSCEF) Traditional Ruler Conference 2014 in Abuja, Oritsejafor said Nigerians hate the truth and the greatest war the country is fighting presently, is the war against truth, Leadership reports.

According to him, no nation can grow if they do not embrace the truth because it is only the truth that can set you free.

The CAN president said: “Nigeria is fighting against truth. We hate truth, we hide truth and we fear truth. It is so unfortunate. In John 8:32, Jesus said you shall know the truth and the truth will make you free. Nigeria is not free because we are running away from truth. Truth can be bitter, but when you swallow it, when it gets inside, it could become sweet.

“No nation can grow or develop without embracing the truth. No matter how difficult it is. In the same John 8:46, Jesus said, ‘if what I have told you is the truth, then why do you refuse to believe me?’ This is the situation of Nigerians today, we are like ostriches, and we are a nation of pretenders.

“We run from the truth and we want to believe that somehow, our troubles will just vanish, but it never happened that way, because truth has a way of creating a level plain ground for everybody.”

Oritsejafor, therefore, advised the over 30 traditional rulers drawn from North-Central, North-West and North-East zones who were present to correct the anomaly, while also calling on Nigerians to face the truth, accept it, work with it, live by it, and also build a nation of truth.

Also speaking, the National chairman of NOSCEF, Mr Olaiya Phillips, described the activities of Boko Haram in the North-East as an inferno engulfing the nation.

Lamenting the challenges facing northern community and the entire Nigeria, Phillips said: “In recent months, many politicians have tried to claim that one political party or another is secretly using Boko Haram for their own ends. Providing them with weapons and finance; yet not one piece of evidence has been forthcoming.”

He added that these politicians don’t want to help the government. All they want is to get the peoples’ votes so that they can look after themselves.

Pastor Ayodele Joseph Oritsejafor is the founding and Senior Pastor of Word of Life Bible Church. He has been accused of being too friendly with politicians for the past couple of years. There were even rumours that his private jet was given to him by President Goodluck Jonathan.

McClurkin, the senior pastor at the church and gospel singer, called for people to come together for a prayer rally at his Freeport, N.Y. church Tuesday at 7 p.m. during a time of protesting around the country.

“I believe that the church body should not be a spectator, but a participant and leader in dealing with such issues as the recent verdict announced,” McClurkin said in a statement obtained by The Christian Post. “This is a time for the church to unite and raise their voices to God in prayer.”

The goal for the prayer rally is for, “leaders and their churches to come together, receive instruction and strategic steps through prayer, that will bring hope and possible resolve to the hearts of people in the community and globally.”

While McClurkin took to his Twitter account to publicize what he called a peace rally, he also made it clear that people could join his church in taking buses to Washington D.C. where people will march with Rev. Al Sharpton against the recent killings of unarmed minorities at the hands of police officers.

“PRAYER/PEACE RALLY 2NITE @PFCNY 7pm,” McClurkin tweeted. “Taking buses down to DC on this Saturday for the MARCH ON WASHINGTON w/#NAN & @revalsharpton ..join us 2Nite at 7pm and ride w/us on Saturday to DC!! Church must outcry against INJUSTICE-!”

Rev. Sharpton, the Baptist Minister and social justice activist who heads the National Action Network, explained the reason for the march that will take place in the nation’s capitol Saturday.

“On Saturday, Dec. 13, thousands will join the families of Eric Garner, Trayvon Martin, Akai Gurley and Michael Brown as they and National Action Network and other civil-rights organizations gather in Washington, D.C., for a march against police violence. Right now the nation is engaged in a thorough conversation about race, policing and healing,” Sharpton wrote in his Huffington Post blog. “While this dialogue is necessary and long overdue, we need more than just talk; we need legislative action that will shift things both on the books and in the streets.”
