Vicar and Daughter Arrested on Suspicion of Murder

A Church of England vicar and his daughter have been arrested after the body of a new-born baby was found at a Lancashire vicarage.

Rev Jim Percival, 64, the vicar of Holy Trinity Church, Freckleton, and his 28-year-old daughter, Ruth, are suspected of killing the baby boy, who is thought to be Ruth’s child.

Both father and daughter are also suspected of attempting to conceal the child’s birth. A 65-year-old woman, said to be the vicar’s wife, Susan Percival, has also been arrested for conspiracy to conceal a birth.

The Telegraph reports that police were initially sent to the house on Tuesday 25 November after reports of a stillbirth.

Shortly afterwards, Jim Percival is said to have disappeared for a few days.

He was seen in the parish again on Monday this week at the switching-on of the Christmas lights, and was arrested by police on Tuesday.

Concerns arose after inquiries were made into the cause of the baby’s death. The police reported that a post-mortem had been carried out but proved inconclusive. The boy’s death is now being treated as suspicious.

Christian Association of Nigeria fixes December 7 as day for Anti-Boko Haram Prayers

The Christian Association of Nigeria has declared Sunday December 7 2014 as day of special prayers for victims of insurgency and special offering for the victims.

The General Secretary of CAN, Dr. Musa Asake in a statement issued on Wednesday in Abuja on behalf of the Christian community in Nigeria also extended warm greetings to fellow Nigerians “especially as we come towards the end of another year as a nation.”

He said, “At different fora and on different occasions, CAN has urged Nigerians of different faith to pray for peace and the end to the insecurity plaguing the nation.

“CAN has undoubtedly remained the strong voice against the evil of Boko Haram and other vices in the society, condemning their acts and suggesting ways of countering them, to the appropriate authorities.

“Unfortunately, Nigerians are still inundated with pictures and reports on the ceaseless mayhem in parts of North East in Nigeria and this has prompted CAN to appeal to all churches in Nigeria to set aside December 7 as a day of special prayers for the victims of the insurgency and to collect special offerings to assist them.”

According to him, it is pertinent in times like this for all brothers in faith, to reflect on the individual and collective lives of Nigerians vis-à-vis “the challenges that we have all faced in the course of the year.”

“We are expected to offer special prayers, not just for our slain Christian brethren but for all those who lost their lives in the attacks, that the Almighty God will grant them eternal rest and through these prayers intervene in the challenges that the insurgency has brought to the countless number of families that have been directly or indirectly affected by the crisis.

Pray that God will give us all the wisdom and strength to execute this task with minimal difficulty to the glory of God the Father.”

Imprisoned and Tortured Egyptian Christian Convert Vows to ‘Starve Himself to Death

The Christian convert who made history by becoming the first person in Egypt’s history to attempt to legally change his religious affiliation on his government identification from Islam to Christianity, has “vowed to starve himself to death” in response to his “illegal” imprisonment, his attorney said.

Bishoy Boulous, who is formerly known by his Muslim name of Mohammed Hegazy, was sentenced to five years imprisonment by an Egyptian court in July on the allegation of causing “sectarian strife.”

Boulous’ attorney, Karam Ghobrial, claims that the 32-year-old’s detention is in “violation of the law” and that the charges against him were motivated by his original attempt in 2007 to have the Egyptian government legally recognize his conversion from Muslim to Christian, Front Page Magazine reports.

“The [current] judge is behaving in a prejudiced manner in this case because Bishoy had public[ly] announced his conversion to Christianity, [stressing] the need for attention to this case and escalating it so everyone knows what this convert is being exposed to,” Ghobrial said.

In July, a Minya Criminal Court judge sentenced Boulous, who was working as a reporter for a Coptic Christian television station at the time, for “disturbing the peace by broadcasting false information.”

At the time, Boulous was producing a documentary regarding the social turmoil pertaining to Islamic attacks on Egyptian Christians.

Although Boulous’ appeal hearing was scheduled for Nov. 16, it is unclear whether or not Egyptian State Security allowed him to travel from his prison in Cairo to attend the appeal hearing in Minya, which is over 150 miles away.

Ghobrial expressed concern a few days before the hearing that his client would not be allowed to travel to attend his own appeal hearing, which meant that his five-year sentence would have been confirmed…Read More

7,000 Dancers to Tango in Rome for Pope’s 78th birthday.

Thousands of tango dancers will celebrate Pope Francis’s 78th birthday with a flash mob later this month, according to the Catholic News Agency.

The organisers have promoted the event on social media as “the largest milonga in the world” – a milonga being a more informal, relaxed version of the tango. Some 7,000 dancers are expected to take part.

“We have gotten all of the permits and we will dance a milonga with the official permission of the city of Rome and the Vatican gendarmerie!” said Cristina Camaroni, who is organizing the flash mob.

The event is planned for 4pm on December 17, Pope Francis’s birthday. The flash mob dance, which is expected to last two hours, will take place in Risorgimento Square in Rome, near to St Peter’s.

About 3,000 of the dancers, wearing white handkerchiefs around their necks, are expected to take part that morning in the Pope’s general audience in St Peter’s Square.

Pope Francis is known to enjoy the tango, which originated in the late 19th century on the Uruguayan border of his native Argentina.

“I like Tango very much. It’s something that comes from inside of me. My favorite singers are Carlos Gardel, Julio Sosa and Ada Falcon, who later became a nun,” he said as Cardinal Bergoglio in the 2010 book-interview The Jesuit by Francesca Ambrogetti and Sergio Rubin.

Commemoration of Christmas Truce top Priority for Churches

A Christian charity’s organising carol services with the hymn Silent Night in churches and sports stadia across the country, commemorating one hundred years since the Christmas truce between British and German soldiers.

HOPE together’s picked the hymn because British and German soldiers are said to have sung it together on Christmas Eve as part of the truce. They also famously played a football match together on Christmas Day.

Fans at Stoke City Football Club will be singing Silent Night with a 400-piece choir, when they take on Chelsea Football Club later this month.

Roy Crowne, the Director of HOPE together, told Premier’s Inspirational Breakfast: “On Christmas Eve on the German side, there was a song that was sung… The English recognised the tune and recognised it was Silent Night… and because of the significance… everyone realised it was Christmas Day the following day.

“They went as whole groups from parts of our country and I’m sure parts of Germany, and I think in the light of that, and the horrific war that it was, this was a moment where they just thought: ‘it’s Christmas’.

“And I think, the significance of Christmas they still remembered, and said: ‘how can we shoot each other on Christmas Day’?

“Isn’t it amazing that the Gospel and a Saviour coming into the world to bring peace, reconciliation, was born on that day: ‘surely we should try to remember’? And they did.”

The carol events come as Staffordshire County Council has published a war general’s letter from one hundred years ago, providing new details on the famous truce between British and German soldiers over Christmas in 1914.

The letter says a German shouted for a truce, and offered to leave his trench as long as a British soldier did as well.

A British soldier carefully left, and seeing a German was doing the same others followed from both sides, the letter says.

It also says soldiers shared cigars, sung songs and walked on No Man’s Land together.

General Walter Congreve VC, who wrote the letter to his wife, said he was invited to leave the trench as well, but chose not to “as I thought they might not be able to resist a general.”

Thousands attend State-Recognized Funeral for the Munroes

Thousands celebrated Dr. Myles Munroe and his wife, Ruth, two influential leaders in Christianity being laid to rest Thursday in a state-recognized funeral in the Bahamas.

The funeral came nearly a month after the couple died in a plane crash along with eight others from their church Bahamas Faith Ministries.

Bahamas Prime Minister Perry Christie called Dr. Myles Munroe “indisputably one of the most globally recognizable religious figures our nation has ever produced.”

The story of that rise to prominence is incredible. He was born to poor parents in 1954 and is one of 11 children.

“I was born to transform followers into leaders. And leaders into agents of change,” Myles Munroe said in 2008.

Myles Egbert Munroe discovered his life’s purpose at age 13, not long after a school teacher told him he was nothing and he would never amount to anything. It’s a story he shared on CBN’s Turning Point program.

“And I ran home to that house and fell before my mother and began to cry. And my mother did something that I hope every mother does. She looked at me and she held me very close and she shook me and she said ‘First of all don’t you ever say that again,’” Munroe said on the show.

“And she gave me her big Bible,” he continued. “One verse of scripture, Ephesians, chapter 3, verse 20. And she said, ‘You go in that dirty room and you read that.’

“And I went I read the Scripture and my tears were dropping on the page as I remember what the teacher said to me,” he recalled. “And that Scripture said one thing, it said ‘Now unto him, who is able to do exceedingly, abundantly above far beyond you could ever think, ask or imagine according to the power that worketh in you,’ and I remember my tears began to turn into laughter…Read More
