Online retailers hope for Shopping Surge on Cyber Monday’:

Dubbed “Cyber Monday”, some online stores offer discounts for consumers ramping up their Christmas shopping.

The first two Mondays of December tend to be the busiest online shopping days, after browsing over the weekend.

Cyber Monday comes after the frenzy of Black Friday offers – which some stores have carried over for a few more days.

However, some analysts say that shoppers are leaving their Christmas buying later.

This is the result of greater confidence in delivery services as retailers now rely so heavily on online sales.

Nigel Wilson, managing director of consumer insight at Experian Marketing Services, said that the pre-Christmas shopping peaks were “clearly identifiable”.

Experian predicts consumers will spend £649.6m on 1 December, or £451,000 a minute – a 26% increase on Cyber Monday last year.

As the month goes on, online spending tends to be replaced by spending on the High Street for last-minute gifts and Christmas preparations. The busiest shopping day in stores is, according to Experian, on Boxing Day when traditional sales begin.

Cyber Monday is seized on by retailers’ marketing arms. The same is now true of Black Friday – which originated in the US. The discounts on offer prompted some frenzied scenes on Friday.

Police criticised management of some supermarkets after crowd surges and scuffles in scenes that officers in Greater Manchester described as “totally predictable”.

Online retailer Amazon UK recorded orders for more than 5.5 million goods, with about 64 items sold per second – its busiest ever day.

Some online retailers reported problems with customers accessing their websites on Friday owing to demand.

World AIDS Day 2014; Organisations Team Up to Reach 1 Million American Christians

The ONE Campaign, founded by Bono, and Biblica, the publisher of the NIV Bible, are teaming up in an effort to help 1 million American Christians seek a cure for AIDS and expand AIDS prevention using Jesus Christ’s teachings as found in the Bible.

“Through this partnership with ONE and Biblica’s own global church and individual networks, we hope to expose over a million people in church to this life-saving message,” Biblica’s chief executive officer Carl A. Moeller told The Christian Post. “We decided to get involved with this project when we were contacted by ONE leadership to help connect World AIDS Day (Monday, December 1) with an Advent message.

“The central message of Advent is the eternal hope that we have in the coming of Jesus – and the healing life He brings – our partnership with ONE will help get this message out even further.”

Biblica is providing materials for the more than 10,000 churches associated with the ONE campaign. Materials, including a simple outline to help guide the understanding of Jesus’ perspective on suffering and the role in meeting the needs of those who suffer from HIV-AIDS, can be downloaded and/or printed out. This material comes from Biblica’s 10-year project “Reach 4 Life” that was developed in Africa to encourage abstinence and understanding of this disease.

The Reach 4 Life material includes 40 lessons and four short journeys, introducing teens to Christ and giving them the power they need to abstain from premarital sex. The journeys include: Finding Faith, Getting Growing, Loving Life, and Choosing Change.

The ONE Campaign is working to bring awareness to this issue worldwide using rock stars, celebrities, politicians, and the largest brands in the world. “Biblica is always working to partner with churches, global ministries, and service providers to bring the transforming power of God’s Word to people’s lives worldwide,” said Moeller.

Organizers say that progress has been made since the early days of the HIV/AIDS epidemic.

“Today, we can stop mother-to-child transmission of the disease. The numbers of people receiving life-saving anti-retroviral drugs (ARVs) has been steadily climbing, and hit 13 million in 2013,” they said. “This does not mean that the crisis is over, however. There are still too many people who lack access to even be tested, too many pregnant women with difficulty getting access to a clinic who fear for their unborn children.

In sub-Saharan Africa, the most affected region, 24.7 million people are living with HIV/AIDS. We are all called upon to pray and take action to close the gap in HIV/AIDS treatment and help those currently suffering and living in fear for themselves and their loved ones. On World AIDS Day (December 1st) we try to remember and take action for those with HIV/AIDS. These reflections can be used on WAD, or throughout the year…Read More

Nigerian Christian Town becomes Victim of Suspected Insurgent Attack

Dozens are believed to have been killed in a suspected Boko Haram attack on a largely Christian town in northern Nigeria on Saturday.

Residents of Shani, Borno state, report that men arrived by motorcycle and started throwing bombs and shooting at people. The exact death toll is uncertain.

The Daily Post Nigeria reported that thousands of locals fled into the bush for safety as the attack unfolded on Saturday night.

It is the third time Shani has suffered a fatal attack by militants since 2011. Previous attacks were targeted at election offices and the divisional police headquarters.

Witnesses told the Daily Post the attackers were well armed and there were no military personnel or police officers to defend people as the attack took place.

“They rode on motorcycles and were more than 30 men. They started throwing bombs into houses…then the Boko Haram fired shots at people fleeing,” resident Ishaya Brimah told Reuters by phone from a nearby village on Sunday.

“They set ablaze the police station, houses and a telecom mast…I saw people fleeing, some bodies on the ground.”

On Friday, around a hundred people were killed when gunmen set off three bombs and opened fire on worshippers at a mosque in the northern Nigerian city of Kano.

Christian Woman Suffers Miscarriage after being Stripped and Beaten

A pregnant Christian woman in Pakistan has suffered a miscarriage after she was stripped naked and beaten following an argument with her Muslim superiors.

According to the British Pakistani Christian Association, which works to create a voice for Pakistani Christians and to improve education and opportunity for minorities in Pakistan, Elishba Bibi, aged 28, was three months pregnant when she was stripped naked and beaten by two Muslim men in Sheikhupura. This is the same the same district that Asia Bibi, the woman sentenced to death for blasphemy for allegedly insulting the prophet Mohammed, comes from.

Muslims as well as Christians have been persecuted under Pakistan’s blasphemy laws, where any insult to the Koran or Islam can warrant a sentence of death by hanging. There have been many accusations, riots, attacks and even rape and killing of “infidels”.

Christians in Pakistan, who represent the second largest religious minority after Hinduism, often take the menial and subservient jobs. Reports say Elishba Bibi was set upon by two Muslim men after she had an argument with two Muslim women who referred to her as an untouchable. The men were allegedly relatives of the women.

The association claimed: “They beat her with Iron rods and sticks leaving welts across her body, whilst they spat at her in disgust. The assailants were not satisfied with her public humiliation and stole 1,000 rupees (£10) from her, Elishba’s entire weeks wages, a gold necklace she was wearing and her mobile phone.”

The report claimed observers watched the beating and laughed, throwing stones at her as she walked home afterwards… Read More

Pope Francis Canvasses for Unified Church

Pope Francis has used the last day of his visit to Turkey to appeal for unity between the Catholic and Orthodox churches.

He’s held a meeting with the spiritual leader of the world’s Orthodox Christians.

Francis and Patriarch Bartholomew I held a service at the Orthodox Church of St George in Istanbul to mark an important feast day for the Orthodox Church.

Their respective branches of Christianity split in 1054 over differences on the power of the papacy.

The Holy Father used the service to assure the Orthodox faithful unity would not “signify the submission of one to the other, or assimilation”.

“I want to assure each one of you gathered here that, to reach the desired goal of full unity, the Catholic Church does not intend to impose any conditions except that of the shared profession of faith,” he said.

Patriarch Bartholomew I raised the issue of Islamic State in Iraq: “The modern persecutors of Christians do not ask which church their victims belong to,” he said.

“The unity that concerns us is regrettably already occurring in certain regions of the world through the blood of martyrs.”

Pope Prays alongside Senior Islamic Cleric in Istanbul’s Blue Mosque

In a gesture designed to highlight his commitment to inter-faith dialogue, Pope Francis conducted a silent prayer alongside a senior Islamic cleric in Istanbul’s Blue Mosque on Saturday. Facing Mecca, Francis bowed his head in prayer for several minutes while standing next to Istanbul’s Grand Mufti Rahmi Yaran. The Vatican described the gesture as a “moment of silent adoration” of God.

Francis’s predecessor, Pope Benedict, caused dismay among many conservative Catholics and some Muslims when he appeared to pray in the same mosque on his visit to Turkey eight years ago. The Vatican felt compelled to publish a statement saying that Benedict had merely been in meditation, though he later acknowledged that he “certainly turned his thoughts to God”.

Francis then paid a visit to the Hagia Sophia, the most important cathedral of Orthodoxy for almost 1,000 years. The basilica was turned into an imperial mosque under the Ottomans when they conquered the city in 1453, and converted into a museum after the foundation of the Turkish republic in 1923.

His visit was followed by a papal mass in the Catholic Cathedral of the Holy Spirit, which the leader of the world’s 1.2 billion Roman Catholics said alongside Bartholomew I, head of the 300 million Orthodox believers worldwide.

At the entrance to the church, Turks and foreigners alike strained to catch a glimpse of the pope as he emerged after the mass. One Argentinian TV assistant director, who came to visit his Turkish girlfriend in Istanbul, said he was surprised and excited about the possibility to see the pope. “This is the first stop for me, I came straight from the airport,” he said.

Garbis Atmaca, 72, an Armenian jeweller from Istanbul, said he had high hopes for the pope’s visit. “It is very good that he came,” Atmaca said. “His visit will have a good impact on the Islamic world. It will help foster understanding and peace.”

The mixed Christian community in Turkey is very small, estimated at about 80,000 in a country of 75 million, and only the few Roman Catholics and Chaldeans regard the pope as their spiritual leader. Atmaca, who belongs to the Gregorian-Armenian church in Istanbul, said that he nevertheless holds the current pontiff in high regard. “He is a very modest man, the best pope we ever had.”

Three Austrian nuns who attended the mass said that they had never seen as much cheering for a pope. “We came to see Pope Benedict eight years ago,” one of them said. “But we have never seen anything like this.”

Francis’s visit comes at a time of extreme hardship for the dwindling Christian communities in the region, especially in neighbouring Syria and Iraq where Islamic State (Isis) militants have captured large swathes of land and persecuted Shia Muslims, Christians, Yazidis and others who do not agree with their radical interpretation of Sunni Islam. Many of those fleeing the violence currently live as refugees in Turkey.

The 77-year-old Argentinian pontiff urged that fundamentalism be fought not through military interventions, but by eradicating poverty, hunger and marginalisation around the world.

“Both [the pope and Bartholomew] are deeply concerned about the brutal treatment and expulsion of Christians from their homes in the region, which has historically been the cradle of Christianity,” John Chryssavgis, theological adviser at the Patriarch of Constantinople, said.

Some fear that increased authoritarianism, nationalism and President Erdogan’s constant focus on Sunni Muslim identity might lead to more pressure on minorities in Turkey, too; others believe the situation has started to improve for Christian minorities during the 12 years of Islamic Justice and Development party government.

“Things are good now, better than before certainly,” Atmaca said. “I think the Islamist rhetoric [of the government] is mostly show.”

Others feel there has been stagnation. “Things will likely not get worse under the AKP,” said Orhan Kemal Cengiz, a human rights lawyer and expert on minority rights. “But they will not get better either. The Christians in Turkey should stand up for their rights and make more demands.”

Speaking at the presidential palace on Saturday, Francis underlined the importance of religious freedom for everyone. “It is essential that all citizens – Muslim, Jewish and Christian – both in the provision and practice of the law, enjoy the same rights and respect the same duties,” he said in a joint press conference with Erdogan.

Later on Saturday, Bartholomew I, with whom the pope shares close personal ties, is to receive Francis at the ecumenical patriarchate.

Cyber Monday Roundup: Where to Find the Best Deals in Tech

If lining up outside stores in the cold isn’t your idea of a nice Thanksgiving night, Cyber Monday may be your savior. It’s the less-turbulent (and safer) online alternative to IRL Black Friday, and the day (now even week) of online shopping can offer prices that are just as good as the brick and mortar shops.

This season’s Cyber Monday falls on Dec. 1, but that hasn’t stopped some sites and stores from throwing up sales already. Check out our rundown of the best websites to scope out this year, and make it a point to stop by our Yahoo Tech Gift Guides page regularly this holiday season for more shopping tips.

Amazon.com
Amazon’s online Black Friday sale is going on now, with new surprise deals hitting the site every 10 minutes. The online retail giant will continue this approach through its seven days of Cyber Monday sale, kicking off Dec. 1. The best prices on tech products the company has disclosed so far include 40 percent off Panasonic 47-inch and 55-inch smart 3D HDTVs, more than 50 percent off Sony and Philips portable speaker systems, and free and discounted apps in the Amazon Appstore.

Walmart.com
Deals at Walmart’s Cyber Monday sale include up to $500 discounts on super-large HD TVs, a three-game PlayStation 4 bundle for $449, and more yet-to-be-disclosed prices on Nintendo 3DS and more.

Target.com
The Cyber Monday specifics aren’t being dealt by Target quite yet, but last year’s weeklong event included $80 off a Samsung GS3 Mini unlocked smartphone, a 47-inch LG HD TV at 67 percent cost, and up to $400 off select digital camera packages.

Bestbuy.com
Some Cyber Monday-ish deals are already happening at Bestbuy.com, like this Apple iPad mini 2 for $224.99 or Amazon’s Fire TV Stick for $24.99 (both with free shipping), but the official sale listing won’t be disclosed ahead of Thanksgiving. Last year’s big hits were a sub-$400 price on an Intel-packing Lenovo laptop, and LG’s then-flagship G2 smartphone free with a contract agreement.

Newegg.com
If we are taking the 2013 Cyber Monday event at Newegg as any indication on what to expect this season, we should have some nice discounts coming our way. Last year, the site tossed out great prices on tablets, laptops, and home entertainment system products.

Tigerdirect.com
You can actually shop Tiger Direct’s “Tech the Season” sale right now. It’s a full catalog of sales-priced computer-related products with a super-low-priced “Daily Deal Slasher” item rotated every 24 hours.

Brand sites
Shooting directly to an electronics company’s own website has proved in recent years to be a Cyber Monday winner. This time around, for instance, Motorola has already announced a $140-off deal on the unlocked version of its flagship Moto X smartphone, available Dec. 1. Dell, Microsoft, HP, and Lenovo have also posted plans to unveil the details of their cyber shop sales come Monday, so we say bookmark all those sites now.

Cell providers
Verizon, Sprint, T-Mobile, and AT&T have Cyber Monday deals of their own lined up, as the carriers normally do. Among them, AT&T is the only company so far to spill the beans on what its (ho-hum) sale will be — several mid-tier smartphones priced at 99 cents and discounts on tablets when you purchase a phone at full price. Of course, this doesn’t mean the yet-to-be-announced discounts from the other carriers won’t be worth checking out on Dec. 1.
