Billy Graham’s Internet Evangelism Hits Milestone : 5 Million Decisions for Christ

BGEA]—It’s still dark outside when Janet Wright takes a seat at her large, wooden desk.

She begins typing on the laptop in front of her as a cat curls up in a black cushioned office chair nearby. Wright is in her office at home in Texas, chatting online with a woman halfway across the world—and leading her to a relationship with Christ.

Wright is one of more than 330 trained volunteers with BGEA’s Internet evangelism ministry, Search for Jesus. And one of many who are part of a new ministry milestone: 5 million decisions for Christ. That’s like filling New York’s Yankee Stadium 100 times with people who have said “yes” to Christ.

“Five million is exciting,” Internet Evangelism Director John Cass said as the ministry approached this milestone, “but a second later, a minute later, somebody else is going to make a decision, and that’s just as exciting.”

The ministry hit the milestone Monday morning.

BGEA launched Search for Jesus (SFJ) in April 2011, building upon decades of Billy Graham’s multimedia ministry by using the Internet to share the love of Christ across the United States and around the world.

Through SFJ’s evangelistic website, PeaceWithGod.net, people of all ages are seeing and hearing a clear Gospel message through videos and Scripture. The website allows them to commit their lives to Christ or ask a question.

More than 25 million people have been exposed to the Gospel since the ministry began, with many receiving one-on-one discipleship and free follow-up materials.

The individual interaction comes through SFJ’s trained volunteers across the country. They serve as e-counselors, chatting live with people on PeaceWithGod.net; as discipleship coaches, guiding people through a free, online discipleship course called KnowJesus.net; or as email responders, answering spiritual questions and pointing people to Christ…Read More

And ultimately, you want people leaving your church saying, ‘It was good to have been in the house of the Lord.” – Don Moen

Global Officials Gather to Combat Religious Persecution

Oslo’s Nobel Peace Center this month served as a launchpad for what lawmakers from around the world hope will be a global coalition to fight religious persecution.

The gathering took place in the face of escalating violence against religious believers worldwide, and against a backdrop of carnage the same week. Reports of atrocities continue to emerge from Iraq, where the Islamic State captured and continues to hold hundreds of women and children after it evicted Christians, Yezidis, and other minorities from Mosul and Nineveh Province this summer.

From Pakistan just as the Oslo meetings began came news of a brutal murder of a Christian couple. Shama Bibi, a 28-year-old mother of four who was also five months pregnant, was beaten to death and her body thrown into a brick kiln on the site where her family lived and worked in Punjab Province. Her husband Shahzad Masih also was killed after a mob estimated to number in the thousands threw him into the kiln fire alive on Nov. 3.

Loudspeakers from the local mosque incited the violence as locals believed Shama had desecrated a Quran in burning trash. But Shama, said family members, did not know how to read. After the tragedy, Nadeem Anthony, an investigator with the Human Rights Commission of Pakistan said “categorically” there had been no burning of the Quran, only paper with Arabic writing on it.

That kind of brutality helped to underscore the urgency of the Oslo gathering. After two days of meetings, lawmakers representing 30 countries on Nov. 8 signed the Charter for Freedom of Religion or Belief, a statement reaffirming “the right to freedom of thought, conscience and religion” contained in the Universal Declaration of Human Rights.

Said Baroness Elizabeth Berridge, a member of Britain’s House of Lords and one of the organizers of the new movement, “Our main goal is to use our position as legislators from different countries, political parties and faiths to try and change the reality on the ground for those being persecuted.”

Oslo, she said, represented just a start in a campaign where she expects challenges: “This initiative has only just begun and effective action requires resources. However much the needs cry out we cannot do everything at once.”

Berridge also pointed out the importance of standing with lawmakers “in jurisdictions where speaking up can come at great personal risk.” One in particular among the lawmakers in Oslo was Asiya Nasir from Pakistan. She holds a reserved seat for Christians in Pakistan’s National Assembly under the Islamic JUI-F party. As she stepped to the platform to sign the charter, the room broke into applause and one of the delegates said, “You are very courageous…Read More

School Admin Accused by Students Claiming Christian Club was Denied

Students at a New York High school are claiming that their Christian club was denied by administration. Liz Loverde, a sophomore at Wantagh High School said that she had the idea to form “Dare to Believe” as an outlet for students to escape the trials of high school.

“I want to help kids, I see that my school is filled with bullies and depression and it’s sad to just walk in it every day, and I found my answer through Christianity and so I just want to share that,” Loverde said.

The 16-year-old student says that the school administration denied the club’s status because it was faith-based and not permitted on campus.

Jeremy Dys of the Liberty Institute is representing Loverde and other Christian students of Dare to Believe. Dys said Loverde attained the proper application for the club and the school principal pushed it back saying, ‘Oh this is about the Christian club, you can’t have the Christian club on campus.’

“All students have a right to be able to meet on campus, and they can’t be denied simply because of their faith,” Dys said.

Wantagh High School maintains that it did not reject the club’s formation.

A statement from the school district said, “As it is required with all student clubs, proper protocol and procedures must be followed and implemented before the club can be formally recognized. The district is currently reviewing this request.

In a statement online, Myles Munroe Jr and his sister Charisa write:

“We would like to take this time to address all of you here and everyone around the world that has shown their support and expressed their condolences during this difficult time.

We want you all to know that in spite of the recent tragedy…we all have comfort in knowing that God is in control. We know there are many questions as to how or why something like this would be allowed to happen to such great individuals, but yet still God is in control.

We would like to make it known that although we are all grieving our losses and are deeply saddened by this tragic event, we have never been nor will we ever feel hopeless. There is no question in our hearts that the spirits of the nine persons whose lives were taken are now resting with our Heavenly Father. We rejoice for we know they are in a better place watching over all of us and rejoicing amongst the heavenly angels.

“We will not allow death to claim any victory, but we celebrate the life and legacy of each individual. This tragedy does not mark the end; the end of life, the end of a vision, the end of a journey, nor the end of a purpose, but it marks the new beginning of an era. An era of a new generation that will carry on the vision and legacy of our father and mother and of each individual whose life was lost so unexpectedly.

“So let’s not mourn their deaths but let’s celebrate their lives and find joy in knowing that although God may not explain himself, he will reveal himself. In the words of our father, ‘The greatest tragedy in life is not death, but a life without a purpose.’ We know there is a greater purpose in all of this and we are now the vessels for this new vision and legacy to be carried on.”

Two Christian Men Killed by Youths In Kenya Following Police Raid

A group of youths with machetes and knives killed three people on Kenya’s coast after police raided two mosques that officials said were used to recruit Islamist militants, police said on Tuesday.

At least two of the three were Christian.

About 10 youths chanting “Allahu Akbar”, or “God is greatest”, killed a shopkeeper who tried to close his store in case of a riot, police had said late on Monday. The man’s brother said he was Christian. On Tuesday, police said two more people had been killed, at least one of them Christian.

Police had raided two Mombasa mosques on Monday, seizing weapons and literature, which officials said was evidence of militant activity. They shot one man dead, who they said was trying to attack them, and arrested 251 other people.

Kenya has been trying to break up the militant networks that it blames for a series of attacks on its coast and the port city of Mombasa, saying many of the recruits have been inspired by al Qaeda-linked Somali Islamist group, al Shabaab…Read More

23 Christian Families Trapped in ISIS Stronghold

Twenty-three Christian families were reportedly unable to escape from Raqqa and are now trapped in the ISIS stronghold. The families are now facing Islamic extremism and will be forced to pay ISIS’ “protection tax.”

Some Christians were unable to flee due to finances; others could not leave because poor health or old age prevented travel.

The Christian Post reports that the families will be subject to the protection tax of $535 in a few days. Some of the families will not be able to afford to pay and be evicted from their homes.

ISIS also continues to implement strict Sharia law in the region and has converted Raqqa’s churches into offices for the promotion of Islamic extremism.

Munir S. Kakish, chairman of the Council of Local Evangelical Churches in the Holy Land said,
“In my opinion this is a very grave situation. No western leader is moving to stop such a tragedy but they offer only empty words with no actions.”

MGM Invests Millions Into Joint Venture in Faith and Family Entertainment

Metro-Goldwyn-Mayer shelled out $343 million for a 55% stake in a joint venture with Mark Burnett, Roma Downey and Hearst Entertainment, according to the company’s quarterly earnings releases.

As part of the push in the faith and family business, MGM revived the dormant United Artists brand and installed Burnett as CEO of the newly created United Artists Media Group. Burnett and Downey helped mastermind “The Bible,” a successful mini-series that was a ratings hit and spawned the movie “Son of God.”

In terms of quarterly results, MGM’s revenues dipped 3.9% to $233.5 million for the three-month period ending in September, down from $242.9 million in the year-ago frame. Net income, however, rose 72.2% to $28.6 million, compared to $16.6 million in the prior year, while EBITDA increased 6% to $67.9 million, up from $64.4 million in the 2013 quarter.

MGM’s film unit fielded two major summer releases over the period: low-budget heartstring tugger “If I Stay” and the expensive action film “Hercules.” This December brings the release of the final film in “The Hobbit” trilogy which MGM is releasing with Warner Bros.

On the television front, the company has been working to transfer its library of film titles to the small screen, backing series such as Fargo and Teen Wolf.

MGM is privately held, but since it emerged from bankruptcy protection in 2010, it has been publicly releasing its financial results.
