“Being a Bishop is Dangerous”, Says Archbishop of Liverpool

The Archbishop of Liverpool has said that being a bishop is dangerous during the ordination of Mgr Marcus Stock as Bishop of Leeds.

Speaking during his homily at Mgr Stock’s installation Mass on Thursday, Archbishop Malcolm McMahon, said: “Being a Bishop is dangerous because it might go to your head.”

He continued: “More importantly, you could mistakenly lead the Church away from Christ – ‘God forbid,’ you might say, but a lot of well-meaning Bishops have done it in the past. Or, more likely, you might neglect yourself in serving others so that you can no longer serve them as best you can. But being a danger is not sufficient reason to refuse the office of Bishop – and thank God, for all of us, you didn’t. There is virtue in obedience, a lesson that you can only teach if you have learned it and practised it for yourself.”

Mgr Marcus Stock, former general secretary to the Catholic Bishops Conference for England and Wales, was ordained at a Mass at St Anne’s Cathedral on Thursday.

During his sermon, Archbishop McMahon said that the new bishop didn’t “do things by half.” He said: “famously he begins his day at 4.30 am – although I wouldn’t suggest getting into the habit of ringing Bishop’s House at that time of day – and everything he does is marked by a great sense of devotion and prayer, considerable thought and a real concern for others. Although he is hard on himself, he is always, unfailingly tender with others; this means that you can be sure he will never fall into the trap of being a dictator over the group which is put in his charge, but will always be an example that the whole flock can follow…Read More

What I tested: One of Bluesmart’s five co-founders, Brian Chen, brought a prototype of Bluesmart to our New York office, where I had a chance to preview the functions and design of the app-in-progress. I also got to test out the locking, tracking, and weighing features of the case. And I put my grimy little hands all over its Made-in-China exterior and interior, which are still in the early stages of design…Read More

Christian Doctor Who Contracted Ebola in Sierra Leone, Dies at Nebraska Hospital

A surgeon who contracted Ebola while treating patients in Sierra Leone has passed away in a hospital in Nebraska, where he had been flown for treatment, officials announced Monday.

Dr. Martin Salia, 44, had been described repeatedly by health workers as being much sicker than the Ebola patients previously brought to the U.S. for treatment.

“Dr. Salia was suffering from advanced symptoms of Ebola when he arrived at the hospital Saturday, which included kidney and respiratory failure,” the Nebraska Medical Center said in a statement. “He was placed on dialysis, a ventilator and multiple medications to support his organ systems in an effort to help his body fight the disease. He also received a dose of convalescent plasma and ZMapp therapy was initiated on Saturday.”

The hospital had been treating Salia in its biocontainment unit that has successfully treated two other Ebola patients this fall.

Ebola has killed more than 5,000 people in West Africa, mostly in Liberia, Guinea and Sierra Leona. Of the 10 people treated for the virus in the U.S., all but one has recovered.

After Salia arrived in Omaha, his ambulance to the hospital was accompanied by a single Nebraska State Patrol cruiser and a fire department vehicle – a subdued arrival in contrast to the August delivery of Dr. Rick Sacra, whose ambulance was flanked by numerous police cars, motorcycles and fire vehicles.

Salia had been working as a general surgeon at Kissy United Methodist Hospital in the Sierra Leone capital of Freetown. It’s not clear whether he was involved in the care of Ebola patients. Kissy is not an Ebola treatment unit, but Salia worked in at least three other facilities, United Methodist News said, citing health ministry sources.

Salia, a Sierra Leone citizen who lives in Maryland, first showed Ebola symptoms on Nov. 6 but tested negative for the virus. He eventually tested positive on Monday…Read More

RCCG Pastor E.A Adeboye Speaks on Near Death Experience

The General Overseer of The Redeemed Christian Church of God (RCCG), Pastor Enoch Adejare Adeboye, declared that he isn’t a superhuman and also has the same fears as any mere mortal.

Ministering at the November monthly Holy Ghost Service with the theme: ‘Great Expectations’, Daddy G.O. (as he is fondly called), revealed to the mammoth crowd how he was gripped with the fear of death during one of his numerous ecclesiastical trips outside the country.

He recalled how he was gripped with fear and close to death during one of his trips with the then Nigeria Airways.

“Contrary to what many of you may think I am human and I have my fears too. There were times I have had cause to fear and doubt because I am human but God always ended up disappointing my fears and doubts.

“In one of my trips with the then Nigeria Airways, the pilot had announced, when we were already airborne, that there were indications that the plane would crash-land. Immediately the pilot made the announcement, I was afraid and as if that was not enough, he said there were expert fire fighters who would put out the fire when the plane crashes.”

Pastor Adeboye continued: “Immediately I embarked on a quick run through my life just to be sure I was ready to meet my Maker. I also told God that I never knew this was how I would end my race. I was really afraid.”

Laughing over the situation which has become a testimony, Adeboye said the fear of death temporarily took over him and other passengers until God assured him that he was not going to die and that the situation occurred so that God can communicate with him.

“When God gave me that assurance that we will not die that He only wanted to have a conversation with me, I felt relaxed and as God would have it, the Lord took charge of the plane and we landed safely,” he narrated.

Museum of the Bible to Begin Construction on December 1st

Construction on the Museum of the Bible will begin by Dec. 1 as the final tenants leave the Washington D.C. site that will house the building just three blocks from the U.S. Capitol, museum board Chairman Steve Green said.

Presenting the archeological evidence of the people, places and events of the Bible in a non-evangelistic way will hopefully prove the truth of the book, but leave people to decide for themselves whether to accept Jesus as Lord, Green told Baptist Press.

“Evangelism would not be a direct result. The museum would be nonsectarian,” Green said. “Our role is just to present the information. But I think that, and our hope is that, it would change peoples’ lives, that they would realize that this book is something for them to consider and would embrace its principles and live accordingly.”

General contractor Clark Construction is already demolishing the interior of the former Washington Design Center that will house the museum, but will begin construction in earnest as the final tenants’ leases expire. The eight-story, 430,000-square-foot museum is slated to open in 2017 with $800 million in assets.

“We want to invite all people to engage with this book,” Green said. “We think education is the first goal, for people to realize how this book has impacted their lives, and then consider the principles and apply them to their own lives because of the benefits that it brings…Read More

T.D. Jakes To Produce True Story “Where A Man Stands”

T.D. Jakes, producer of the wildly successful film Heaven Is for Real, recently acquired film rights to another inspirational, true-life story. The book, Where a Man Stands: Two Different Worlds, an Impossible Situation, and the Unexpected Friendship That Changed Everything, chronicles the adventures of Carter Paysinger and Steven Fenton.

Carter Paysinger’s mother pursued a multicultural permit that allowed a few minority students to attend the upscale, mostly white, mostly Jewish, Beverly Hills High. It was then that Paysinger had to live up to his parents’ motto of “Don’t just strive to be good. Always strive to be great.” Surviving and even thriving at a school where he had little in common with his peers, he later returned to Beverly Hills High School as coach. He mentored countless teens over the years, including Steven Fenton who was powerfully inspired by his mentor before graduating and moving on.

Skip ahead twenty years. Fenton and Paysinger were reunited when Beverly Hills High began to suffer from poor administration and families abandoning the school. Joining together in a fight for the entire community, Fenton encouraged Paysinger to apply for the position of principal. But Paysinger was quickly rejected because he didn’t “fit the profile.” The book chronicles the struggle that followed and the events that led to Paysinger becoming the first African-American principal in the school’s 80-year history.

Paysinger and Fenton co-authored the book, which was published by Howard Books, an imprint of Simon & Schuster. “When we announced the book deal, I received more inquiries on the movie rights than any other book I published,” Jonathan Merkh, VP and publisher of Howard Books, told The Hollywood Reporter. “This is a story that is unique yet universal.”

The winner of the movie rights bid would ultimately be T.D. Jakes, whom Fenton and his wife first met at the Potter’s House megachurch in Dallas. Jakes, Fenton and Paysinger have an exciting road ahead, and T.D. Jakes continually proves to find inspiring stories that connect with audiences.

Burkina Faso Church Rejects Agreement of Prelate as Head of Transitional Council

The Catholic Church in Burkina Faso has welcomed an agreement on restoring civilian rule after a late-October military takeover, but rejected suggestions the handover of power could be supervised by a Catholic bishop.

Msgr Joseph Kinda, spokesman for the bishops’ conference in the West African nation, said all religious communities were represented at the talks that reached the agreement on transition to civilian rule on November 13. The talks in Burkina Faso’s capital, Ouagadougou, agreed on a constitutional charter leading to elections in November 2015.

“While we’re ready to propose a qualified lay Catholic,” leading the transition “isn’t a task for clergy,” Msgr Kinda told Catholic News Service on November 14. “Canon Law rules out the exercise of temporal power, and it’s never right for a priest or bishop to hold it”.

He said Church leaders had backed the charter and would also urge the inclusion of supporters of the ousted 27-year president, Blaise Compaore, in a new 90-member legislative National Transitional Council.

In an interview with Radio France International, Cardinal Philippe Ouedraogo of Ouagadougou welcomed the readiness of Burkina Faso’s new military rulers to restore “normal constitutional life,” but also rejected media claims that he could head the Transitional Council.

“A cleric doesn’t engage in such a form of power,” the cardinal said.

“There will certainly be difficulties in finding this rare bird — a man or woman of consensus who can direct the transition, but I’m confident, since our country has plenty of technocrats who’ve worked well for it,” he added.

Public buildings were burned and at least 30 people were killed during late October anti-government riots that led to the flight of Compaore and the assumption of head of state duties by the deputy head of the presidential guard, Lt Col Isaac Zida.

In a November 4 statement, the 16-member bishops’ conference said “deep discontent” in Burkina Faso had culminated in the insurrection, but added that the Catholic Church now counted on respect for “the authority of the forces of order and security”.
