Body of Priest Kidnapped 6 Months Ago found in Mass Grave in Mexico

A Ugandan Catholic priest has been identified as one of the bodies found in a mass grave in Mexico last month.

Fr John Ssenyondo had been missing since being kidnapped by gunmen six months ago.

His car was blocked by unknown attackers who then forced him into their vehicle on April 30.

Police found the mass grave whilst looking for 43 student teachers who went missing at the end of September.

Officers have now revealed the bodies found in the grave near the town of Ocotitlan were not the students.

Dental records and DNA had to be used to identify Fr Ssenyondo, who had been in Mexico for five years.

Revd Victor Aguilar, vicar in the diocese of Chilpancingo-Chilapa, told the BBC: “We don’t know the motive, you know violence is widespread in the state.”

Nigerian Military Recaptures Christian Town From Insurgents

The Nigerian army has said it’s recaptured and “secured” the Christian town of Chibok from Islamic militants.

Boko Haram had taken control of the area last week but state forces have pushed them out.

Spokesman General Olajide Olaleye told AFP: “Mopping up ops ongoing. [The] town is now secured.”

It’s thought the town was re-taken in a joint operation between local vigilantes and the military.

Leading elder Pogu Bitrus told AFP army soldiers “stayed outside the town to mop up the insurgents trying to escape” as the vigilante fought inside.

Chibok was captured by Boko Haram on Thursday amid little fight back from the Nigerian military.

Eyewitnesses say soldiers didn’t put up any challenge to the extremists and fled leaving the town open to capture.

The insurgent group is trying to create an Islamic state and has killed more than 10,000 people in the past five years.

Since the government announced a ‘ceasefire’ with Boko Haram on October 17 the militants have taken control of several towns.

Revd Canon Hassan John from the Diocese of Jos told Premier the government was ‘definitely not’ doing enough to protect Christians.

He said: “We keep seeing again and again that the most vulnerable areas in Nigeria are the local governments that are predominantly Christian

SCOAN Building Collapse: Bodies of 74 South Africans Flown Home

Long wails echoed through an airforce base hangar Sunday as grieving family members broke down during a ceremony to receive the remains of 74 South Africans killed in a Nigerian church building collapse.
Many could not fight back tears when names of those killed were called out and a procession of giant mortuary trucks carrying the bodies, slowly drove past the gathering to the tune of the “death march” played by the police band.

A total of 116 people — including 81 South Africans — were killed on September 12 when a multi-storey guesthouse collapsed at a Lagos mega-church.
The bodies were flown home aboard a cargo plane, two months after the accident, leaving behind another 11 victims to be repatriated after the DNA identification process is complete.

People were crushed when the guesthouse that provided lodging for foreign followers of popular Nigerian preacher and televangelist Temitope Balogun Joshua, commonly known as TB Joshua, was reduced to a pile of shattered concrete and twisted metal.

“This is indeed a sombre moment for our nation, the nation is in mourning,” said South Africa’s Deputy President Cyril Ramaphosa, leading the ceremony in Pretoria.

“This tragedy in many ways has united us in grief, it has reminded us of our shared humanity,” he said.

Ramaphosa shook hands with bereaved family members, many of whom wore white TB Joshua’s church scarves around their necks…Read More

Christians Urged to Pray For Prisoners as Prisons Week Begins

At the start of the annual Prisoners’ Week Christians are being encouraged to think about the needs of those behind bars.

The organisation behind the week is appealing for prayers for everyone in jail, their families and victims.

The Archbishop of Canterbury, the Archbishop of Westminster, the Archbishop of Wales and the Moderator of the Free Churches Group all support the event.

Most Revd Vincent Nichols, Archbishop of Westminster, said: “I am delighted to support Prisons Week once again and I strongly encourage Christians to think about, pray for, and act for all those affected by prisons during this special week in November.”

Chaplaincy Training Manager for the Prison Service, Revd Alison Tyler, told Premier many Christians would struggle to pray for those who have done wrong.

But she said: “We have the example of our Lord who was always on the side of those who have sinned and fallen short.

“We have his example in terms of forgiveness. Forgiveness basically is available for whoever asks and whenever they ask.”

Lord, you offer freedom to all people.
We pray for those in prison.
Break the bonds of fear and isolation that exist.
Support with your love prisoners and their families and friends,
Prison staff and all who care.
Heal those who have been wounded by the activities
of others, especially the victims of crime.
Help us to forgive one another.
To act justly,
love mercy and walk humbly together with Christ in His strength
and in His Spirit, now and every day. Amen.

Christian Homes Booby-Trapped by ISIS Militants

A Christian who fled his village in northern Iraq claimed that ISIS jihadists are placing explosives in Christian homes just in case they decide to return, according to the Christian Post.

Ayad from Tel Keppe — a village just outside of the city of Mosul — said Christians are eager to return to their homes after Kurdish forces told refugees that their villages have been liberated. But one man who returned to Tel Keppe was killed by an explosion as as he opened the door to his dwelling.

Ayad said ISIS had also mined the road from Tel Esqof to Tel Keppe with explosives, making the journey back to his village hazardous.

During the seizure of Tel Keppe, Ayad said that even before ISIS entered it, many of his Muslim neighbors had betrayed the village’s Christians.

“The Arabs who were living in the province are the ones who took over the village at 9 p.m; then ISIS forces entered the province and occupied it at 10:30 p.m. When the local Arabs took over the city, they put the black ribbons around their heads and started shouting slogans supporting ISIS.”

Ayad said that the first thing ISIS jihadists did was to remove the crosses from the village church and replace them with black flags; they then turned the church into an ISIS headquarters.

Mexico to Host Conference on Religious Freedom Violations

Victims of religious freedom violations are expected to testify at an upcoming national conference in Mexico.

The conference is organized by Christian Solidarity Worldwide, a Christian organization working for religious freedom through advocacy and human rights in the pursuit of justice.

Currently, Mexico has one of the highest rates of religious freedom violations in the Western Hemisphere. Wherever traditional Mexican justice is practiced, minority religious groups are routinely subjected to forced conversion and participation in majority religious festivals, exclusion from state run schools, denial of basic utilities and even forced expulsion.

A report by the Mexican Commission for the Promotion of Human Rights published in September found that religious intolerance is one of the major causes of forced displacement.

“It is our hope that this conference will give a voice to victims who have been marginalized and silenced by the very government that should protect and uphold their rights,” said CSW’s Chief Operating Officer Andy Dipper. “It is unacceptable that in a modern democracy like Mexico, men, women and children continue to suffer violence and forced displacement solely because of their religious beliefs.”

Actor on a Quest to Save Christmas

In an interview with Assist News Service founder, Dan Wooding, for his Front Page Radio show, Cameron shared about his latest movie, “Kirk Cameron’s Saving Christmas,” that will open in select theaters on November 14, 2014, for two weeks only.

The popular actor said he thinks Christmas is the most important holiday of the year. “I love Christmas,” he said. “I love everything about it. It’s my favorite time of year—I just love when all the Christmas cookies are being baked, love the smell of chestnuts being roasted over a fire. I love Christmas trees and the Christmas carols setting up the nativity, everything. But Christmas is falling on hard times these days.

“It seems more and more commercialism and secularism is pushing ‘the Baby in the manger’ to the back seat. And while many might like to see Christmas deleted from the calendar, I think that Christmas ought to be put front and center especially at this time of year.”

Cameron then commented that his new feature film, which he says, is going to teach people a lot about the true meaning of Christmas.

“This is a story about my sister who is throwing a Christmas party at her house and everyone’s having a great time—except her husband who is sitting in his car in the driveway sulking and complaining that all the decorations and festivities are not what Christmas is all about. And so I go out to the car and teach him how to see Christmas through new eyes…Read More

Steps to Putting That Sin to Death

It’s a battle we all must fight. It’s a battle we all must fight from this moment until the moment we die. It’s a battle fraught with discouragement and setbacks, yet a battle we all can and must win. It’s the battle against sin.

All throughout the New Testament we are told to put our sin to death. For example, in Colossians 3 Paul says, “Put to death therefore what is earthly in you: sexual immorality, impurity, passion, evil desire, and covetousness, which is idolatry.” How do you do that? How do you stop a sin, and how do you stop an especially stubborn and deep-rooted sin? Is there any hope? I want to track with John Owen here (via his great work Overcoming Sin and Temptation) and give a list of 9 things you need to do to overcome sin. Consider that sin that is prevalent in your life and then consider each of these 9 steps.

#1. Evaluate

Evaluate whether your sin is especially serious and deep-rooted. You have heard it said that “all sin is the same,” and there is a sense in which this is true—every single sin alienates you from God. However, some sins are more serious than others because they bring more serious consequences. The most serious sins are the ones that have gone so deep that they are now habitual; your subconscious habits now lead you to sin again and again. Consider your sin. Is it manifested in your habits? Do you sin almost an auto-pilot? Is it easier to sin than to do what is right? If it is, your sin is especially deep and you will need an extra measure of God’s help to battle it and overcome it.

#2. Fill

Fill your mind and conscience with the guilt, the weight, and the evil of your sin. Sin always tries to convince you that it isn’t very serious and that it is not worth worrying about. “Come on. Others have sinned worse. This is just a little sin. You deserve this.” But God wants you to know that your sin is eternally serious and absolutely worth worrying about. You need to consider just how dangerous your sin is, how it dishonors God, how it calls upon God to discipline you, how it makes you less useful in the Lord’s work, and even how it may show that you are not saved at all. Let that sin sit heavy in your mind and soul. Never succumb to the temptation to minimize it.

#3. Load

Load your conscience with the guilt of your sin. Compare your sin to God’s law, to what he demands of you and promises you can have if only you take hold of righteousness. Feel the guilt that you have incurred. Consider how patient and kind God has been with you in allowing you to go on without striking you down for your sin. Consider all the ways he has been gracious to you. Look to the gospel, not for forgiveness yet, but for the ultimate picture of the cost of your sin. See Christ suffering for your sin and don’t turn away your gaze. Feel all of that. Feel the weight, the guilt of it.

#4. Long

Long for deliverance from the sin. Now you are in the right frame of heart and frame of mind to desire deliverance from that sin. When you know and feel the weight of your sin, you will want to put that sin to death for the best reasons. You will no longer hate that sin merely out of fear of consequences or fear of shame or embarrassment. Now you will rightly see the cost and guilt of your sin, and you will long to be delivered from it so God can be glorified in you. Long for it. Pant for it. Cry out for it.

#5. Consider

Consider how this sin is amplified by your nature or constitution. You need to consider whether there is something in your makeup that makes you especially prone to this sin. Some people come from whole families of alcoholics and it may be that there is some kind of predisposition to addiction within them. Or perhaps you were sinned against earlier in life and the sins that were committed against you seem to make you especially prone to a sin of your own. Though these things may be true, you cannot allow them to excuse your sin. Instead, allow them to further convince you of your weakness and your desperate need for God’s strength. Being predisposed toward a certain sin puts the burden on you to fight even harder against it, to destroy it even more completely, and to be especially vigilant in watching out for its reappearance.

#6. Contemplate

Contemplate the occasions in which this sin breaks out and guard against them. Now think about the times when you fall into this sin. What are the occasions? What happens right before you sin? What are the habits or patterns that lead to it? Think about these things, know what you do before you actually commit the sin, and stop the downward spiral long before it gets to the point of sinning. You never commit a big sin without first sliding down a long and slippery slope of little sins. So consider those little sins, identify the patterns, and learn to stop the little sins…Read More
