Microsoft Corrects 19-Year-Old Windows Security Flaw

Microsoft has patched a bug that went undetected for 19 years.

The security hole was discovered in May by IBM researchers, who then teamed up with Microsoft to fix it before publicly releasing its existence, BBC News reported Wednesday. The Windows bug, dubbed WinShock, could be used to remotely run code on a computer if the user views a malicious webpage via Internet Explorer. Once a machine would be infected, the attacker could control it remotely.

The flaw affected every version of Microsoft’s desktop OS since Windows 95.

BlackBerry Collaborates with Samsung In a Bid To Push Mobile Services

BlackBerry announced partnerships with Samsung Electronics Co and other high-profile tech players on Thursday, broadening the reach of its new mobile-device management and security platform, and sending its shares 7 percent higher.

BlackBerry and Samsung, the world’s No. 1 smartphone maker, will offer a “highly secure mobility solution” for Samsung’s Android devices starting in early 2015. The system will wed BlackBerry’s security platform with the South Korean company’s own security software for its Galaxy devices.

“The partnership with Samsung is a very big deal,” said John Jackson, a technology analyst at IDC. “It’s hard to imagine a partnership with more significant practical impact potential.”

BlackBerry said the tie-up is a long-term commitment.

Methodist Church Pastor Sued for Refusing to Conduct Gay Marriage

A United Methodist Church (UMC) pastor in the United States had had a formal complaint filed against him by a same-sex couple who are part of his congregation because he refused to officiate at their wedding.

Kenneth Barner and Scott Chappell have charged Rev Kelly Carpenter, pastor of Green Street church in Winston-Salem, North Carolina, with “failure to perform the work of ministry”, according to the United Methodist News Service (UMNS). They also accuse him of “gender discrimination”.

Both are chargeable offences according to the UMC’s Book of Discipline. However, so is officiating at a same-sex wedding.

According to Barner and Chappell, the rules are contradictory. “God’s grace is available to all and so should the pastoral ministry (be)”, the charge says.

Carpenter is sympathetic to the cause, saying: “If there was a way for me to be a co-signer with the complaint, I think it’s right on the money.

“It really calls out the contradictions in our Book of Discipline, which calls us to be ministry with all people.”

The church had made its stance on same-sex weddings clear in March 2013, when its leadership council decided not to hold any weddings at all in the church sanctuary until the denomination lifted its ban on same-sex marriage.

A pastor in California says that he would choose jail time over providing church employees with abortion coverage in their health insurance. Pastor Jack Hibbs is strongly opposed to the state mandate which requires all employers to cover abortion procedures in employee health plans.

Christian Today reports that the pastor of Calvary Chapel Chino Hills has now joined forces with six other churches to challenge the new mandate. The churches hired Alliance Defending Freedom and Life Legal Defense Foundation to argue that the state mandate is a violation of their religious freedom.

Hibbs said, “I felt violated; I felt forced. I love America and I love American history, and I have a lot of invested interest in defending the unborn.”

The pastor said he will stop at nothing to maintain his biblical stance on abortion.

“We will take this to the point of being jailed, if necessary, being arrested, if necessary – whatever it takes,” he said. “I cannot violate my biblical worldview. Once I have to do that, I no longer live in the United States our founding fathers gave me.”

Washington D.C.’s National Cathedral will host a Muslim prayer service for the first time on Friday (Nov. 14). Charisma News reports that the event will symbolize unity and religious freedom.

Rev. Gina Campbell, National Cathedral director of liturgy and Ebrahim Rasool, South African Ambassador to the United States planned the event.

Ebrahim said that the event will be “a dramatic moment in the world and in Muslim-Christian relations.”

Rizwan Jaka, ADAMS mosque spokesman said, “We want the world to see the Christian community is partnering with us and is supporting our religious freedom in the same way we are calling for religious freedom for all minorities in Muslim countries. Let this be a lesson to the world.”

Muslims have participated in past interfaith services at the National Cathedral, but this will be the first time Muslims have planned and led their own service.

Fifteen members of a church group who became lost during a hike in the mountains outside Los Angeles over the weekend were spotted from the air on Monday and were being rescued by helicopter, a county sheriff’s spokesman said.

The hikers, who range in age from 14 to 36 years old, became lost on Sunday while hiking to a waterfall in the San Gabriel Mountains near Pasadena, Los Angeles County Sheriff’s spokesman Johnie Jones said.

Some two dozen sheriff’s deputies searched overnight, but were unable to find the church troop in the darkness, despite coming across family members who had received text messages from them reading: “Help.”

Jones said the hikers were glimpsed in the forest at about 9:30 on Monday morning by a sheriff’s helicopter crew and did not appear to have suffered any major injuries.

“They were all found together by our air unit and one of our airships lowered a medic down to them,” Jones said. “The medic is assessing their medical needs taking them out one at a time to a safe location.
