Facebook Tries to Simplify Its Privacy Policy

One more time, Facebook is trying to simplify its lengthy privacy policy and explain how it targets advertisements to its 1.35 billion users.

The world’s largest online social network uses the information people share on its site, along with the apps they use and the outside websites they visit, to show them advertisements deemed relevant to them.

But over the years it has faced concerns from users and from government regulators and privacy advocates that its policies are too complicated.

On Thursday, Facebook introduced a tool called “Privacy Basics,” a set of animated, interactive guides designed to show users how to control what they share on the site. It also proposed changes to its terms and privacy policy, which it calls its data policy. The new policy is much shorter.

Facebook in September had introduced its Privacy Checkup feature, which was aimed at helping users of the huge social network better manage sharing their information and postings. The new system uses a blue dinosaur to guide Facebook users through its maze of privacy settings for personal information and for sharing their posts.

Facebook announced the plan in June in its latest response to concerns about privacy, following criticism over its data mining practices for marketing purposes. The dinosaur will pop up when users log on to Facebook, and take them through each step of the privacy settings, from their personal information to the apps that may access Facebook data.

A privacy shortcut will also be on each Facebook page to allow users to update their privacy settings.

Ways Churches Drive Away First-Timers

If you attend a church regularly, you’ve probably noticed the phenomenon. A guest shows up for a worship service, but he or she never returns. It is, unfortunately, a common issue in many churches.

I did a Twitter poll to ask these first-time guests why they chose not to return to a particular church. While some of the responses were anticipated, I admit being a bit surprised with some of them.

Though my poll is not scientific, it is nevertheless fascinating. Here are the top ten responses in order of frequency

1. Having a stand up and greet one another time in the worship service. This response was my greatest surprise for two reasons. First, I was surprised how much guests are really uncomfortable during this time. Second, I was really surprised that it was the most frequent response.

2. Unfriendly church members. This response was anticipated. But the surprise was the number of respondents who included non-genuine friendliness in their answers. In other words, the guests perceived some of the church members were faking it.

3. Unsafe and unclean children’s area. This response generated the greatest emotional reactions. If your church does not give a high priority to children, don’t expect young families to attend.

4. No place to get information. If your church does not have a clear and obvious place to get information, you probably have lowered the chances of a return visit by half. There should also be someone to greet and assist guests at that information center as well.

5. Bad church website. Most of the church guests went to the church website before they attended a worship service. Even if they attended the service after visiting a bad website, they attended with a prejudicial perspective. The two indispensable items guests want on a website are address and times of service. It’s just that basic.

6. Poor signage. If you have been attending a church for a few weeks, you forget all about the signage. You don’t need it any more. But guests do. And they are frustrated when it’s not there.

7. Insider church language. Most of the respondents were not referring to theological language as much as language that only the members know. My favorite example was: “The WMU will meet in the CLC in the room where the GAs usually meet.”

8. Boring or bad service. My surprise was not the presence of this item. The surprise was that it was not ranked higher.

9. Members telling guests that they were in their seat or pew. Yes, this obviously still takes place in some churches.

10. Dirty facilities. Some of the comments: “Didn’t look like it had been cleaned in a week.” “No trash cans anywhere.” Restrooms were worse than a bad truck stop.” “Pews had more stains than a Tide commercial.”

There you have it. The top ten reasons first-time guests said they did not return to a church. I can’t wait to hear from you readers. You always have such good additions and insights.

RCCG Pastor E.A Adeboye Reacts To Myles Munroe’s Death

The death of Dr Myles Munroe, his wife and 6 of his team members on Sunday, November 9, 2014 has been followed by tributes from various people whose lives have been greatly influenced and impacted by the renowned speaker, author and Pastor.

Tons of unanswered questions, doubts and fears by believers and non believers alike have also trailed the cause of his death, through a plane crash. Praiseworld Radio reached out to Pastor EA Adeboye, General Overseer of the Redeemed Christian Church of God (RCCG) seeking his view on this issue.

Praiseworld Radio: Did Dr Myles Munroe impact your life/ministry in any way?

Is it God’s will for Believers to die in Plane Crashes as we have seen in the past or via extreme painful means?

Pastor E.A Adeboye: I regret the death of Myles Munroe an evangelist and deep teacher of The Word. We can not deny our grief.

Without any doubt, Myles Munroe was a great man of God. His ministry impacted several ministries and generations. He will be greatly remembered and sorely missed by the Body of Christ.

Nothing happens without God allowing it. Though God is not behind this or any other plane crash. God will still ensure everything works together for good. The most important thing is for us to make heaven. God, who is sovereign and knows everything, has allowed it to happen. He knows best and why. He will not allow it if He can not use it.

We have no choice but to surrender to the supreme wisdom of God and trust Him fully at all times and in all situations.

Praiseworld Radio: Thank you for your response, sir.

Prayer, Overnight Vigils Ongoing Towards Grand Jury Verdict On Ferguson Shooting

NEW YORK — Ferguson, Missouri, — and perhaps the entire nation — is bracing for a grand jury decision on whether or not police officer Darren Wilson will be indicted for the fatal shooting of Michael Brown. At least one Christian and social justice activist is calling on people of faith to pray, for whatever might ensue once the verdict is revealed, while local churches are planning for overnight vigils.

If news headlines are any indication — “Missouri Governor Outlines Ferguson Preparations;” “Gun sales spike as Ferguson area braces for grand jury decision;” “New Riot Gear at the Ready in Ferguson” — the atmosphere in the 21,000-person St. Louis suburb is taut with anxiety.

Although no one knows for certain when the grand jury’s decision will come, St. Louis County Prosecuting Attorney Robert McCulloch, whose office will make public the decision, has said in a statement that he does not expect the grand jury to give word “until mid to late November.”

Whether the grand jury completes its work days or weeks from now, city and state officials and residents have the same expectations — that failure to indict Wilson for shooting unarmed 18-year-old Michael Brown will result in wide-scale protests or even rioting, as was the case in the immediate aftermath of the teen’s killing. There were further concerns that the aggressive and militarized response shown by law enforcement during early days of protests, and which garnered international attention, might again rear its head…Read More

Myles Munroe’s Family Make Statement at Press Conference

On November 12th, just three days after the fatal plane crash, the family of Dr. Myles and Pastor Ruth Munroe held a press conference in the ballroom at the Grand Lucayan Hotel.

Press were asked to decline from questioning in light of the difficult loss they have endured.

Giving welcome remarks was Jerome Edmonson. He then introduced the son of Rev. Munroe, Chairo (Myles Jr.) who read a statement surrounded by his family. Later Jamaican minister, Dr Peter Morgan, President of the International Third World Leaders Association gave some words.

“We are not sure how or why, something like this would be allowed to happen to such great individuals, but still, God is in control. The past few days have been the most difficult times for my sister and I, my family and all of those affected by this loss.”

“We are all saddened by this tragic event, but we are comforted and encouraged by the outpouring of love and support from everyone around the country and those around the world at large,” said Munroe.

Sterilisation-Related Deaths Shock Indian Church

The Church in India has expressed shock over the deaths of more than a dozen young mothers in government-run sterilisation camps in central Chhattisgarh state.

“This is terrible,” Archbishop Prakash Mallavarapu, chairman of the healthcare commission of the Catholic Bishops Conference of India, told Catholic News Service.

“It is not enough to punish the guilty responsible for this shocking tragedy. The systemic faults behind this tragedy must be exposed and corrected,” said Archbishop Mallavarapu.

While 12 of the 83 poor village women who underwent free government sterilisations at a private hospital in Bilaspur died of subsequent medical complications after being sent home, local government officials said at least 20 more women were critical and were being treated in different hospitals.

Meanwhile, another young mother who attended a similar sterilization camp also died on November 12, raising the death toll to 13…Read More

Jews and Christians Mourn The Death of the Munroes

Israelis, both Jews and Christians, are mourning the loss of Pastor Myles Munroe and his wife, killed in a place crash Sunday evening in the Bahamas.

“Myles Munroe was a key leader of the global evangelical movement, with a big heart for Israel,” the International Christian Embassy Jerusalem said in a statement. “His tragic passing is a loss for Christians and for the Jewish people he loved.”

Knesset Christian Allies Caucus Director Josh Reinstein remembered Munroe as a true friend of Israel.

“His faith and love of Israel was an inspiration to all of us,” Reinstein said. “Israel had no better friend, and the Knesset Christian Allies Caucus was honored to work with him.”

There were no survivors of Sunday’s plane crash. The Lear jet exploded on impact when it collided with a crane at the Grand Bahamas Shipyard on its landing approach.

The Bahamian government also expressed its condolences over the tragic loss of Pastor Munroe, his wife and the eight other passengers, which included several senior members of Munroe’s ministry.

Religious Leaders Pray for Pakistani Couple Killed by Mob

Cardinal Vincent Nichols and the Rt Revd Tony Robinson, the Anglican Bishop of Wakefield, lit candles and prayed yesterday in St Anne’s Cathedral in Leeds for the couple and their unborn daughter who were burned to death in Pakistan last week.

Sajjad Maseeh, 27, and his wife Shama Bibi, 24, who had three children, were attacked by a mob of 1,200 that had gathered after rumours they had desecrated the Koran. It is thought the mob burned them to death at the brick kiln where they worked.

Cardinal Nichols, president of the bishops’ conference of England and Wales, said: “This is a horrific and tragic event which sullies the reputation of a great nation. Surely all people of true religious spirit will, in response, turn to God in prayer, seeking forgiveness for the violence and destruction of life, pleading for peace in our troubled world.

“For my part I pray for the repose of the souls of the couple and their unborn child…Read More

Bible App Hits 1,000 Bible Translations In Over 700 Languages

The hugely popular YouVersion Bible App recently hit the 1,000 mark in terms of number of Bible translations, with over 700 languages available, and creator Bobby Gruenewald said he hopes the milestone will help draw attention to the amount of dedication and effort it takes to translate the Bible into native languages.

“One of the things I’m excited about in celebrating this milestone of 1,000 versions is that for a lot of people it’s going to bring an awareness to the translation effort that’s underway by a number of partners, including Wycliffe and the Bible Society, and various other translation groups that are making Bible text available to the Bible App,” Gruenewald, the Innovation Pastor of LifeChurch.tv in Oklahoma, told The Christian Post.

“What I did not appreciate or fully understand when we first started the process was that each of these translations that are done, they often times take decades to complete. It involves people that have invested, in some cases, their entire ministry life working on developing a translation for a new language.”

He added, “What we get to do is really stand on the shoulders of those that have given so much and to simply make the text available in a digital format for free. It’s a huge effort that I think is unknown to so many believers today…Read More
