Catholic Midwives Right to Reject Abortion to Be Decided By Court

Two Scottish midwives are going to the Supreme Court to defend their right to work as midwives while not being involved in abortions.

The case of Catholics Mary Doogan and Connie Wood against Greater Glasgow Health Board will be heard later.

The pair had previously won a court challenge after objecting to the health board’s request that they ‘delegate, supervise and support’ midwives in carrying out abortions.

But Greater Glasgow Health Board is now appealing that decision before Lady Hale, Lord Wilson, Lord Reed, Lord Hughes and Lord Hodge.

A final decision is expected to be made today.

After ruling in their favour in April 2013 Lady Dorrian said: “In our view the right of conscientious objection extends not only to the actual medical or surgical termination but to the whole process of treatment given for that purpose.”

She added: “The right is given because it is recognised that the process of abortion is felt by many people to be morally repugnant.”

Premier has asked Greater Glasgow Health Board to comment on today’s hearing but has not received a reply.

US High School Sued Over Ban on Student Prayer Group

A conservative group that successfully pushed an Arizona school district to tone down its sexual education curriculum has now filed suit in Colorado, accusing a high school of unlawfully blocking student efforts to gather together for prayer.

The group, the Alliance Defending Freedom, said school officials cited the separation of church and state when they banned religious speech during recess and other “open periods” at Pine Creek High School, north of Colorado Springs.

Academy District Twenty, which covers Pine Creek High School, said in a statement in response that non-curricular groups, which include religious groups, may only meet before classes begin and after they end.

School officials did not immediately respond to requests for comment on the suit.

“Public schools should encourage the free exchange of ideas,” Alliance Senior Legal Counsel Jeremy Tedesco said in a statement on Monday, after the lawsuit was filed in US District Court on Friday.

“Instead, this school implemented an ill-conceived ban that singles out religious speech for censorship during free time…Read More

Google , Raising Money to Fight Ebola Scourge

Google launched a campaign Monday to raise money to fight Ebola, tossing $10 (roughly Rs. 61 crores) million into the pot and saying it will match donations to the fund two to one.

In addition, Google chief executive and co-founder Larry Page said his family’s foundation is contributing $15 million (roughly Rs. 92 crores) to the cause.

“Our hearts go out to everyone whose lives have been touched by this tragedy,” Page said in a blog post announcing the campaign.

Google started collecting contributions at the website, where a message indicated that the two-for-one dollar match would continue until $7.5 million (roughly Rs. 46 crores) more in donations were collected.

Groups targeted by the California-based Internet titan to receive support included InSTEDD, Medecins Sans Frontieres, NetHope, and Save the Children.

The campaign comes less than a month after Facebook co-founder Mark Zuckerberg and his wife announced they were donating $25 million (roughly Rs. 150 crores) to help US efforts to contain the deadly Ebola epidemic…Read More

Ex- Arcbishop Says “Muslims Should Be Allowed To Wear Veils in Class”

Muslim primary school teachers should be allowed to wear head veils whilst in the classroom, a former Archbishop of Canterbury has said.

Lord Rowan Williams said fears that a woman covering her face would affect a child’s education were ‘misplaced’.

In an interview with Christian think tank Theos he said there was no need to ‘panic’ if a Muslim teacher decided to wear a niqab in class.

He said: “I’ve actually been in public discussions in Pakistan with women wearing full face veil, and you learn to read differently, it’s not that those codes don’t happen but there’s a cultural obstacle to overcome.

“As a matter of fact I think that’s largely a misplaced anxiety, but I can see where it comes from.”

There has been fierce debate over whether Muslims should be allowed to completely cover their face in school.

Prime Minister David Cameron has refused to support a ban on the practice but has said he’d support any school which asked Muslims to remove hiqabs.

Facebook Messenger App Hits 500 Million Monthly Active Users

Facebook on Monday announced that its Messenger app has hit the milestone of 500 million monthly active users, growing steadily from 200 million active users in April.

“This is an exciting milestone but with a half billion people relying on Messenger to communicate and connect, it is also a reminder that there is so much left for us to do,” said Peter Martinazzi, Director of Product Management, Facebook.

The company recently separated Messenger from the main Facebook app and made it mandatory for all users to download the Messenger app to continue to enjoy messaging services.

Facebook CEO Mark Zuckerberg recently, during a Q&A session with users, acknowledged that asking more than a billion users to install a new app was not a decision that had been taken lightly, but that he believes that with the two apps users will enjoy a better experience. “…messaging is really important. Each app can do one thing well.”

As a standalone app, Facebook Messenger allows users to send videos, stickers, make free calls, chat with groups and more. Facebook says that with Messenger “it focused on one use case – messaging.” The company claims to have also improved the speed and reliability of the app, and ships updates to the app every two weeks…Read More

Retirement Service For UK Bishop Cancelled

The farewell service to mark the Bishop of Gloucester’s retirement will no longer take place because of an ongoing Church of England investigation.

Rt Revd Michael Perham was told by police last month he will face no action after being questioned about two claims of indecent assault.

He’s due to retire officially on 21 November but has not been involved in any duties since the allegations were made.

The Bishop of Tewkesbury has taken over the running of the diocese and said the cancellation was sad: “I know this will be the cause of huge frustration and deep disappointment.”

Rt Rev Martyn Snow added: “Church House, Westminster has confirmed to me the process is still ongoing and there is a formal timetable for this process as it must be completed with fairness to all.

“The diocese must therefore await the conclusion of that process.”

Bishop Michael has always denied the allegations of historical sex offences made in August.

Types of People Who Hear God’s Word…Which Are You

Which category do you fit in?

Have you noticed how many of those personality or temperament tests there are these days? It seems as if there is a self-test you can take for just about everything.

It would not be unusual to hear someone who had taken one of those test say, “I am an Artisan.” Another person might respond, “Oh, the test said I was a Guardian.”

Whatever these labels mean, there seems to be no shortage of them. It seems people love to take those tests so they can discover what “category” they fit into.

Did you know that you could find a test like that in the New Testament— one you can take to see what category you fall into?

In a very familiar passage of Scripture, Jesus used a parable to show us four types of people who hear God’s Word. In the fourth category you’ll find a special type of person—one who bears fruit one hundredfold and receives one hundredfold returns on the seed he sows.

Are you a Category 4 believer? If you’re not, I have good news for you. You can choose to be in that category if you want. You’re not stuck where you are…Read More

At least 38 more were injured, and 23 passengers remain hospitalised. Many of those on the trip are thought to be young people.
