Prayers Pour In For Shot Canadian Soldier

Canada’s Prime Minister has said his thoughts and prayers are with everyone affected by yesterday’s terrorist attack.

Stephen Harper was speaking after a soldier was shot dead at the National War Memorial in Ottawa.

The gunman was killed in a shootout with police, although officers still don’t know if there were accomplicies.

Mr Harper named the dead solider in a live TV address to his nation: “Our thoughts and prayers are with the family and friends of Cpl Nathan Cirillo of the Argyll and Sutherland Highlanders.”

He added: “We also pray for the speedy recovery of the others injured in these despicable attacks.

“Fellow Canadians, we’ve also been reminded today of the compassionate and courageous nature of so many Canadians, like those private citizens and first responders who came to provide aid to Cpl Cirillo as he fought for his life.”

Canadian officials identified the gunman who killed the soldier as Michael Zehaf-Bibeau, who government sources said was a recent convert to Islam.

Thousands of people have also been offering prayers on a dedicated Facebook page for Cpl Nathan Cirillo.

One person wrote on the site: “RIP Nathan. Thank you for your service and the ultimate sacrifice. So tragic, so unnecessary. My prayers go out for you and to your family, friends and colleagues… Read More

They will include beneficiaries of the Royal British Legion and its staff, members of the public and armed forces personnel.

Stone, whose Poppy Appeal single No Man’s Land (Green Fields of France) was recorded with guitarist Jeff Beck and will be released on November 3, was joined by 29-year-old former Royal Marine Commando Pete Dunning who lost both legs fighting in Afghanistan.

This year’s appeal has a particular resonance as it falls during during the centenary of the outbreak of the First World War, from which the poppy tradition derives.

Ebola Scare Keeps T. D. Jakes’ Daughter Home

It’s being called “Ebolanoia” by some—a word mix of Ebola and paranoia—that has seemingly gripped the hearts of Americans.

Cora Coleman, 27-year-old daughter of Dallas-based mega pastor Bishop T.D. Jakes, skipped the State Fair over the weekend, citing Ebola risks.

“We brought the fair to us last night because we wasn’t going because Ebola is real and ain’t nobody got time for that!!” she said.

Her fear-tinged words captioned a photo of southern-style fixings on Instagram, where she added several hashtags: “#friedcheeseburgers #friedchesseburgersticks #friedbarbecuechickenwings.”

Coleman ended by describing the family’s indoor (away from Ebola) feast as “fatty delicious… Read More

California Churches Compelled to Pay for Abortions

The Department of Managed Health Care is imposing employers, including churches and other religious organizations, to provide elective abortions in their insurance policies.

In response to the mandate, Life Legal Defense Foundation and Alliance Defending Freedom have filed a complaint on behalf of seven California churches, according to Charisma Magazine.

Objecting to offering their employees insurance which includes abortion coverage, Skyline Church in La Mesa, Foothill Church and Foothill Christian School in Glendora, Alpine Christian Fellowship in El Cajon, The Shepherd of the Hills Church in Porter Ranch, City View Church in San Diego, Faith Baptist Church in Santa Barbara, and Calvary Chapel Chino Hills in Chino, have signed onto the complaint.

“Forcing a church to be party to elective abortion is one of the utmost-imaginable assaults on our most fundamental American freedoms,” said ADF Senior Counsel Casey Mattox. “California is flagrantly violating the federal law that protects employers from being forced into having abortion in their health insurance plans. No state can blatantly ignore federal law and think that it should continue to receive taxpayer money.”

The complaint explains, “DMHC is an arm of the State of California and purports to be interpreting and applying the law of California, a state that receives billions of taxpayer dollars…California accepted those funds with full knowledge of the requirements of the Weldon Amendment, but it has chosen to ignore this law. The need to remedy this discrimination is urgent because it is immediately depriving Complainants of a health plan that omits elective abortions.”

A formal complaint was filed Thursday with the U.S. Department of Health and Human Services.

New Archbishop Of Chicago Declines Living In a $14m Palace

Chicago’s incoming Roman Catholic archbishop will follow in the footsteps of Pope Francis and exchange a lavishly-appointed mansion for a modest rectory.Archbishop Blasé Cupich could take up residence in the historic North State Parkway dwelling.

Built in 1885, it has 19 chimneys, sits on 1.7 acres of prime real estate and is worth at least $14.3 million, though it could fetch far more if it were sold. Near the main residence is a 5,800 square foot coach house which accommodates three nuns who act as staff.

However, Archbishop Cupich has chosen to live in the far more modest rectory at Holy Name Cathedral. A statement from the archdiocese referred to “his expressed desire to reside in a place where he could be most effective in serving all the people in the Archdiocese of Chicago”. When his schedule permits, the Archbishop intends to say daily Mass at the Cathedral.

A committee will be created to consider the best uses for the historic mansion.

Archbishop Cupich is following the example of Pope Francis, who chose to live in the Vatican guest house with other priests rather than in the sumptuous papal apartments. When he was first taken to the apartments after his election he is reported to have said: “There’s room for 300 people here. I don’t need all this space.”

Since his election, Pope Francis has sought to return the Roman Catholic Church to a focus on the poor, and while doctrinally conservative has encouraged clergy to develop a pastoral heart.

According to Vatican commentator John Allen, Archbishop Cupich’s appointment marks the arrival of the “Francis revolution” in the United States. It follows the appointments of three other archbishops, in Cologne, Madrid and Sydney. Allen said: “By now, the profile of a ‘Francis bishop’ has come into focus: Ideologically, moderates rather than hardliners; pastorally, men who place special emphasis on concern for the poor and those at the margins; and personally, leaders who aren’t flashy personality types, with a reputation for being accessible and hands-on.”

Archbishop Cupich’s last appointment was as Bishop of Spokane, Washington. The diocese was badly hit by abuse scandals and declared bankruptcy in 2004. It paid at least $48 million in compensation to victims, which came from insurance companies, the sale of property and donations.

In a statement on his appointment, Bishop Cupich said, “I bow my head in the hope that everyone in Chicago will pray for me in the days ahead.”He succeeds the traditionalist Cardinal Francis George.

Bishop T. D. Jakes Replies Criticism On His Diamond Ring

Every preacher has his or her fair share of people waiting for him or her to slip up.

And Bishop T.D. Jakes is no exception as he personally responded to a “critic” who questioned a diamond ring he wore in one of his Instagram photos.

Taking to Jakes’ Instagram page, @photo_syn_the_sis, provided the following commentary, complete with scriptural references:

“I didn’t know that preachers wear diamond rings, preachers are supposed to be humble Like Jesus was and preach the real truth. You are not even close being like Jesus, you flash your ring, but the truth is you say you know God but do you really. God wouldn’t flash Jewelry around you really need to read your Bible. Acts 2:38 everything in the Bible is the truth, people need to open their eyes and read there Bible not listen to the things you want them to hear. Their BLOOD is on you @bishopjakes The things you say is sad you teach what you think they need to hear, But do you teach on how the Hair is a women’s Glory no you teach what you want them to hear. Man I feel sorry for you on judgment day. The Blood that is on your Hands, all these people that will burn in Hell with you and they will say WHY ??????? JOHN 8:47”

Upon seeing what his critic/hater had to say, Jakes took it on himself to respond in kind as he checked @photo_syn_the_sis for not doing his part in delivering a thorough observation of something that he obviously has a problem with.

“@photo_syn_the_sis Only cowards throw such rocks and then block their site for comment! My Diamond ring is my wedding ring. I’ve been married longer than you’ve been alive!” Jakes stated.. Read More

Catholic Organization Launches Campaign to Raise Funds for Iraqi Christians

A Catholic lay organization has launched a crowdfunding campaign to raise awareness and money to help persecuted Christians and other minorities in Iraq.

“How can common lay people of faith throughout the world help martyr communities in Iraq with something more than their valuable prayers?” asked Gabriela Paz, president of La Filotea Productions, Inc., in an Oct. 14 statement.

“Knowing that faith without works is dead, the answer is with their pocket, by contributing funds for much-needed relief efforts in these communities,” Paz went on to say.

La Filotea Productions is a Catholic lay organization that dedicates itself to evangelization through multimedia and works of mercy. It produces a Catholic radio program, La Filotea – Alma Que Ama A Dios, and manages online social networking, as well as an online Catholic book store on Amazon.

The campaign initiated by La Filotea endeavors to raise at least $1 million to provide food, clean water, shelter, clothing, medical aid, and other basic necessities to the persecuted minorities in Iraq. All the funds that are raised will directly provide humanitarian relief to those in need, through two Catholic religious orders in the area.

Paz explained that La Filotea Productions has “teamed up with the Order of the Most Holy Trinity and of the Captives, and the Institute of the Incarnate Word” in establishing the Catholic Relief Fund for Christians and Other Minorities in Iraq.

“Throughout history, many Christians were persecuted and became martyrs as they defended their faith, laying down their lives for the love of Jesus Christ,” said Fr. Kurt Klismet, O.SS.T, director of advancement for the Order of the Most Holy Trinity of the Captives.

“History is now repeating itself as more than 1.2 million Christians and other religious minorities have been driven from their homes in Iraq, under threat of death or heavy fines if they do not convert and renounce their faith.”

The Order of the Most Holy Trinity and of the Captives (The Trinitarians) was founded in 1198 by St. John de Matha as a Catholic religious order. Its goal was to ransom Christian captives, as well as to perform works of mercy for the poor and suffering.

The Trinitarians will be receiving and distributing the funds raised through the campaign, along with the Institute of the Incarnate Word is also a religious order, a religious order that serves local bishops, often as teachers or by providing services.

“Christians and other minorities in Iraq are being persecuted, murdered, made slaves, and driven from the homes they have occupied since the early Christian communities were formed by the Apostles after the resurrection of our Lord Jesus Christ,” emphasized Fr. Luis Montes, pastor of the Latin Cathedral of St. Joseph in Bagdad, and missionary of the Institute of the Incarnate Word.

The crowdfunding campaign will run from Oct. 14-Nov. 24, and can be found on Indiegogo, which is one of the largest crowdfunding platforms in the world. Almost $5,000 of the $1 million goal has been raised so far.

“We invite all of our brothers and sisters in Christ to join us and contribute, from as little as $10, to the crowdfunding campaign that we have initiated,” stated Eduardo Paz, co-founder of La Filotea Productions.

Texas Pastors Urge Congregants to Get Out and Vote On Freedom Sunday

On Monday Oct. 20, pastors, worship leaders, and men of faith from Dallas, Smith and Jefferson Counties all gathered for the Freedom Sunday Clergy Luncheon. The event was held at the Inspiring Body of Christ Church in Dallas. Their goal was to strategize how to increase voter turnout from their churches and communities this weekend for Freedom Sunday.

The attendees included: Rev. Bryan Carter, Bishop T. D. Jakes, Rev. Rickie Rush, Rev. Dr. Zan Wesley Holmes Jr., Dr. Frederick D. Haynes, and a host of other supporters and pastors.

Freedom Sunday is an effort to recall the spirit of Freedom Summer fifty years ago. In 1964, Mississippi had the lowest percentage of eligible black voters who were actually registered to vote. This led to a coalition being formed that included CORE, SNCC, NAACP, COFO, and other Civil Rights organizations. Their ranks also included almost 1,000 white college students, northern volunteers and citizens all joining together to register as many eligible black citizens as possible.

In 1965, the Voting Rights Act was signed and was a direct result of nonprofit organizations, civic-minded organizations, clergy, and churches banning together to make the African-American community heard. Now, fifty years later, several of the same organizations have come together with the same purpose in mind: to increase the amount of registered voters across the country. Freedom Sunday is a non-partisan coordinated statewide initiative with the goal to increase the African–American voter turnout in and throughout the local faith communities.

In Dallas County less than 6 percent of registered Black voters actually stand up and make their voice heard through their vote. That is why the African-American Pastors’ Coalition, the Interdenominational Ministerial Alliance, Baptist Ministerial Alliance, New Hope Baptist Church, the Potters House, Inspiring Body of Christ, Antioch Fellowship and many others have joined the Freedom Sunday movement.

During the Freedom Sunday Clergy Luncheon, Rev. Bryan Carter, President of the African American Pastor’s Coalition, explained how important it is for the clergymen to be engaged on the inside of the church, as well as, outside their four walls within the community.

“I am reminded of Matthew Chapter 5:13-16 where Jesus calls us both the light of the world and the salt of the earth. We know that the salt works by permeating, salt is rubbed into the meat and that salt which is rubbed into the meat then preserves that meat from the inside out. At the same time light works on the outside, it illuminates and shows the way,” Rev. Carter shared.

He encouraged the attendees to galvanize other churches and communities and drive their fellow citizens to the polls. He recommended strategies such as taking people with you; using available buses, go with their congregations to the polls to make sure their voices are heard throughout the political halls.

In closing Rev. Carter added, “This 50th Anniversary that marks the freedom movement years ago. We get to capture that energy and excitement again to remember how important it is particularly in our community to make sure we exercise our right to vote… Read More

The Do’s and Don’ts Of Christian Dating

The Bible teaches in Genesis, that a man will leave his family to marry a woman to become one flesh. Although its love that drive Christian teens to date, it should be taken seriously and know the person you are dating and their beliefs

First and foremost, Christian dating should be directed by love but not lust:

The Bible makes us to understand that love is the outgrowth of the spirit; we live for God’s love first but also live for the love of others. Christian dating should not focus totally on the physical features of their partners but must follow what’s within their heart. In Proverbs 4:23(keep thy heart with all diligence; for out of it are issues of life) this simply means what’s within your heart determines your actions. 1 Corinthians 13:4-7 teaches us what love really is. If this kind of love exist among Christians they won’t fall into the temptation of fornicating because in this type of love comes self-control.

Secondly you have to be honest with your date about your beliefs:

Most single Christians today are hesitant when it comes to voicing out their convictions and stand on certain matters that are prone to happen when dating. For example sex, or in cases where ones doctrine is different from the other. It happens that Christian teens do compromise to their partners in the fear of being tagged conservative or prejudiced. You have to be blunt on issues that are acceptable to you and those you frown upon. It is better off, walking out from the relationship where you are not being truthful to yourself.

Also maintain those who support your moral principles;

It is good to surround yourself with people who support and share your convictions and are committed to your ethical uprightness. These are people who will guide you, encourage you and honestly criticize you in line with your convictions. This can keep you accountable for your actions. Basically they will serve as a watchdog in your acts as a Christian

Seek dating advice from a mature Christian you respect.

Almost everyone has someone he or she look up to or see as a mentor .When it comes to Christianity and the church ,we have the apostles, the pastors ,deacons, evangelist etc and the chances are there is someone among them whose standpoint and judgment you hold in high esteem. Allow yourself to be taught by that person and gather all wisdom you can because our spiritual beliefs are a larger part of what we are and play a crucial role in sustaining relationship. Proverbs 13:20 says “He who walks with the wise grows wise but the companions of fools suffers harm’’ so seek good counsel. Seeking counsel will help you as a Christian planning towards marriage.

Furthermore do not involve yourself in serious relationship when you are not ready to marry. It is better to go for date when you plan of settling down than not being prepared. Some go into relationships as the bases of getting to know what awaits them in future and this intension end up into sin. Devoting your energy into church activities will help, rather than finding a spouse which you are not yet ready for. This will help you overcome expected sin such as fornication, pornography and the likes.

Ultimately you should not be in multiple relationships at a time:

I believe the aim of every Christian dating is not to remain single but to have a spouse. It is not good for a Christian to date numerous people at a time and having them battle for your love. And above all let the Holy Spirit be your guide to caution you when you are falling out of order as a Christian.

Ancient Jewish Prayer Book Unveild By Israeli Museum

An Israeli museum on Thursday unveiled what it says in the oldest known Jewish prayer book in the world, dating back to the 9th century A.D.

The prayer book, about 10 centimeters (four inches) long and seven centimeters wide, is written in Hebrew, contains about 50 pages, and is still in its original binding. It was donated to the Bible Lands Museum in Jerusalem by Oklahoma businessman Steve Green, a devout Christian and owner of one of the largest collections of rare biblical artifacts in the world.

Green’s family controls the Hobby Lobby crafts store chain, which won a closely watched U.S. Supreme Court ruling in June that allows it to assert religious beliefs to avoid covering contraceptives in employee health plans.

Green told The Associated Press that the book originated in the Middle East and that three experts, working independently, had carbon-dated it to 820 A.D.

Haggai Ben Shammai, the academic director of Israel’s National Library, agreed that the prayer book could be the most ancient Hebrew codex known to exist, though he said there is another contender in Germany.

A codex is a manuscript bound in book form with writing on both sides of page. Until the 5th or 6th century, Hebrew documents were written on parchment scrolls, so a codex represents a big step forward in the history of manuscripts… Read More
