African Pastors Interceed For America

A group of African pastors and leaders recently gathered in Washington, D.C., to pray for revival for the Church and for America.

Participants prayed and sang praises as they called out to God to forgive the nation’s sins and return our land to its biblical roots.

Ebele Okafor of Wailing Women Worldwide attended the rally.

“The only hope we have now is Jesus Christ,” she said.

The event, called “A Solemn Assembly,” was organized by the African Strategic Leadership Prayer Network (ASLPN), a team of African Christian leaders from around the world.

Dr. Michael Obi is the group’s national coordinator.

“We as African immigrants have always believed that the spiritual awakening in Africa was a result of the sacrifices of American missionaries or Western missionaries,” Obi told CBN News.

“And here in America we see the nation in a spiritual coma and because of that God opened our hearts and burdened our hearts,” he said, adding that the problem in America is not physical but spiritual.

Believers from across racial and denominational lines who attended the solemn assembly agreed these are critical days for America, and national repentance through prayer is the only hope.

“We have people from all over Africa, different parts of Africa combined with Native Americans, caucasians, African-Americans and with one voice, with one heart we lifted up our voices unto God on behalf of the Church and on behalf of this nation,” ASLPN National Chairman Darlingtston Johnson said.

There was special prayer for young people who attended the prayer rally as they called upon the name of the Lord on behalf of their generation.

“Prayer isn’t just for the older generation but it’s for our generation too,” Emmaline Elliott said. “God is longing for his people to turn to Him in prayer.”

Organizers of the prayer event said they long to see their intercession make a lasting difference in America now and in the future.

“We really believe that before the end of December we’re going to see major things happen in this nation as a result of this prayer that will bring a change in the culture — in the atmosphere of the nation,” Dr. Obi said… Read More

Houston Pastors Challenge Intimidation By Mayor

Christians across the nation are mobilizing to defend a group of Houston pastors who were ordered by the city to turn over any sermons dealing with homosexuality, gender identity issues or Houston mayor. Their message is simple: Don’t Mess with Texas Preachers.

Dave Welch, the executive director of the Texas Pastor Council, is one of the five ministers who received a subpoena. He said he will not be intimidated by Annise Parker, who is the city’s first openly lesbian mayor, nor will he comply with the city’s demands.

“My answer to that is: Bring it on,” he said.

Houston’s city attorney issued the subpoenas in a response to a lawsuit filed related to the Houston Equal Rights Ordinance (H.E.R.O.), the city’s new non-discrimination ordinance, also known as the “Bathroom Bill.”

The new law, which has yet to take effect, would (among other things) allow men who identify as women to use the restrooms of their choice—and vice versa. Opponents launched a petition drive to put the issue on the ballot.

However, the city threw out the petitions claiming there were not enough legitimate signatures. Opponents then filed a lawsuit, which led the city to issue the subpoenas.

Ironically, none of the five subpoenaed pastors are plaintiffs in the lawsuit.

Welch told me pastors across the Lone Star State are mobilizing and in the very near future they plan to hold a “Don’t Mess with Texas Pulpit Sunday” event.

“We are dealing with bullies used to getting away with abuse of power,” Welch said. “We called their bluff on this…Read More

Secularist Manifesto Compares Christians To Terrorist Groups

Pro-marriage and pro-life Christians have been likened to violent terrorists by a group of secularists and atheists.

A manifesto calling for the establishment of an “international front against the religious-right and for secularism” has been signed by gay rights campaigner Peter Tatchell, National Secular Society President Terry Sanderson and prominent atheist A.C. Grayling.

The Christian Institute has criticized the signatories for equating Christians with groups such as the Islamic State and Boko Haram.

Christian Institute spokesman Simon Calvert commented: “They’re hijacking genuine concern about murderous terrorists to slander evangelicals.

“Clearly, holding traditional views about sexual ethics and having a pro-life stance is not remotely equivalent to the threat caused by groups such as those currently ravaging the Middle East and North Africa.

“The U.K. is historically a Christian nation, and it would be extremely harmful to let go of that heritage in response to hyped up claims from atheists and secularists who are jumping on a bandwagon.

“People need to recognize where the real threats are coming from and stop picking on Christians.”

The manifesto lists the “Christian-Right in the U.S. and Europe” alongside “Boko Haram in Nigeria” and “the Taliban in Afghanistan and Pakistan” as examples where “secularism and citizenship rights” have been abandoned.

It calls for “complete separation of religion from the state,” “separation of religion from public policy” and an “end to discrimination against and persecution of LGBT, religious minorities, women, freethinkers, ex-Muslims and others…Read More

Former Abortion Clinic Turned To Memorial Garden By Christian Group

A Christian ministry plans to turn an abandoned abortion clinic into a memorial garden for the unborn.

Center for Choice, the Uptown Toledo facility where 50,000 abortions were performed between 1983 and 2013, was purchased last week (Oct. 7) by Agora, a Christian prayer organization that is working with a group of local pro-life organizations, said Ed Sitter, executive director of Foundation for Life and Greater Toledo Right to Life.

The new owners bought the center at a real estate auction for $61,000 and plan to demolish the building and turn the grounds into a green space with benches and possibly a waterfall or fountain, according to Sitter.

Carol Dunn, the founder of Center for Choice, said razing the building would be “a wasteful use of money.”

“They have no taste,” said Dunn. “It’s a lovely building. The floors in there are terrazzo. And outside, when it was cared for, it was a good-looking building.”

Center for Choice had been the site of numerous protests during the 1980s and ongoing prayer vigils through the decades. A bomb damaged the building in 1986; more than 50 protesters were arrested after forming a blockade outside the clinic’s doors in 1989.

Center for Choice closed last year after it failed to acquire a written transfer agreement with a local full-service hospital as required by Ohio law.

The lone abortion clinic operating in Toledo today may face the same fate. The Capital Care Network has been seeking an administrative variance from the state that would allow it to remain open without a hospital transfer pact.

“I’m terribly disappointed with the women of northwest Ohio who haven’t had the courage to stand up and speak on the issue,” said Dunn. “They are quiet as mice.”

Christian Aid launches India relief effort

Premier Radio News reports – Christian Aid has joined with partners in India to provide aid for more than 350,000 people displaced by a huge cyclone in the country.

Winds of up to 125mph and heavy rain slammed into India’s east coast on Sunday, killing at least 21 people.

Cyclone Hudhud wrecked homes, uprooted trees, tore down power and communication lines, cut off road and rail links, and flooded thousands of acres of farmland in the states of Andhra Pradesh and Odisha.

Christian Aid’s regional emergency manager, Dipankar Patnaik, said: “India’s eastern coast and neighbouring Bangladesh are routinely hit by severe storms between April and November. This is the stark reality facing some of the poorest and most vulnerable communities.

“It is an incredibly worrying time. People fear for their safety, for their loved ones and for their livelihoods. Whole communities rely on farming and fishing to make ends meet. Rice, coconut, cashew and mango crops have been ruined, and with it people’s source of income.”

Christian Aid has started providing emergency supplies such as food and shelter but says it is hard to get to some areas because of the damage.

Study finds expensive weddings risk Divorce

Premier Radio News reports – Couples who spend more on their weddings and engagement rings are more likely to see their nuptials end in divorce.

US researchers surveyed 3,000 American adults who had once been married for more than 13 years and found that men who spent between $2,000 and $4,000 (£1,244 and £2,488) on an engagement ring were 1.3 times more likely to get divorced than those who spent between $500 (£311) and $2,000 (£1,244).

However, the study also found that spending less than $500 on the ring also correlated with higher divorce rates.

The same also goes for wedding costs. Spending more than $20,000 (£12,444) on a wedding was linked to significantly higher divorce rates than those who spent between $5,000 and $10,000 (£3,111 and £6,222).

One listener on Premier’s Woman to Woman programme thinks people seem to be missing the point. She said: “If you’re in a financial position where you can spend that little bit more money or what’s comfortable for you, then that’s fine; but like I said, to just stress yourself out and worry about this and worry about that, I think we’ve lost sight of what marriage truly means.”

The study also found that habits such as regularly attending religious services, having a baby, having a larger wedding (with more guests) and splurging on a honeymoon trip are all linked to a lower risk of divorce.   … Read More

Women bishops approved by House of Lords

Premier News reports – The House of Lords has approved the decision to allow women to become bishops in the Church of England without the need for a vote.

The General Synod approved the change in July, but it needs to go through both the House of Lords and the House of Commons to become law.

MPs are expected to pass it next week.

Archbishop Welby told the House of Lords: “Over the past 20 years, many women have given outstanding leadership as vicars, archdeacons and cathedral deans.

“Now, for the first time, every post will be open to them. For many people within the Church of England and others it has been a process full of frustration when looked at from the outside.”

He added that letting women become bishops was “long overdue.”

Conservative peer Baroness Berridge said the Church of England could now be a role model for British boardrooms, the British Army and Parliament.

Former Conservative MP and author Ann Widdecombe says she disagrees with the Church of England’s decision.

She was formerly part of the Church of England but has since moved to the Roman Catholic Church, partly because of its stance on women in leadership.

Speaking on Premier’s Inspirational Breakfast, she said: “Christ formed the apostolic succession; he didn’t appoint a single woman apostle. I cannot for the life of me see how we end up with women bishops, but if that’s what the CofE wants to do, that’s down to the CofE. I left.

“This is the man who broke the Sabbath in the terms of the times, the man who was called a glutton and a wine dipper, who feasted with publicans and sinners, who took a whip and drove the merchants out of the temples. He wasn’t constrained by ‘the times’.

“So the idea that he wouldn’t have appointed a woman apostle if he had wanted to is just complete nonsense, particularly when women did play such a major part in his life. His first miracle was at the request of a woman; women were the first witnesses to his resurrection.

“But, he never made them an apostle.”   … Read More

Reaction to Pastor Mark Driscoll’s Resignation Includes Sadness, Gratitude From Mars Hill Church Community

Christian Post reports – Seattle Megachurch Leader Expresses ‘Profound Sadness’ But Says He Is at Peace With Departure

Mark Driscoll, pastor of Mars Hill Church, has resigned from the multi-city megachurch he and his wife helped found 18 years ago after a series of calls were made for the Seattle, Washington, preacher to step down from ministry due to his admitted “divisive” leadership style.

According to an announcement published on marshill.com:

On Tuesday, October 14, Pastor Mark Driscoll submitted his resignation as an elder and lead pastor of Mars Hill Church. The Board of Overseers has accepted that resignation and is moving forward with planning for pastoral transition, recognizing the challenge of such a task in a church that has only known one pastor since its founding. We ask for prayer for the journey ahead.

As is well known, inside and outside of Mars Hill, Pastor Mark has been on a leave of absence for nearly two months while a group of elders investigated a series of formal charges brought against him. This investigation had only recently been concluded, following some 1,000 hours of research, interviewing more than 50 people and preparing 200 pages of information. This process was conducted in accordance with our church Bylaws and with Pastor Mark’s support and cooperation.

The statement on Driscoll’s resignation, signed by the Mars Hill Board of Overseers, Michael Van Skaik, Larry Osborne, Jon Phelps, and Matt Rogers, can be read in full here: https://marshill.com/2014/10/15/pastor-mark-driscolls-resignation.

C.S. Lewis Foresaw Rise of Scientism as Religion Today, Says Scholar at Apologetics Conference

The rise of “scientism,” in which science is uncritically treated as a religion, holding the power to decide ethical questions, was predicted by famous 20th century Christian author C.S. Lewis, scholar John West explained at Southern Evangelical Seminary’s 2014 National Conference on Christian Apologetics.

Neither he nor Lewis are anti-science, West said, recalling that science produced the cure for his father’s cancer. Rather, they are opposed to scientism, which West defined as “the wrong-headed belief that modern science supplies the only reliable method of knowledge about the world, and its corollary that scientists should be the ones to dictate public policy and even our moral and religious beliefs simply because of their scientific expertise.”

West is vice president and senior fellow at the Discovery Institute, a think tank that researches issues related to intelligent design and the role of science and technology in culture and public policy. He previously served as an associate professor of political science at Seattle Pacific University. He has authored or edited 12 books and numerous articles on the intersection of science, culture and public policy.

His Saturday talk, “The Magician’s Twin: C.S. Lewis’s Prophetic Critique of Scientism,” is based upon his edited book and documentary of the same title, which you can watch below.

The title comes from a combination of one of Lewis’s children’s book series The Chronicles of Narnia called The Magician’s Nephew (1955) and this quote from The Abolition of Man (1944): “The serious magical endeavour and the serious scientific endeavour are twins.”

In addition to The Abolition of Man, the Lewis works most often cited by West were The Pilgrim’s Regress (1933), “Willing Slaves of the Welfare State” (1958), and his science fiction works, The Space Trilogy, which were written during the rise of Nazi Germany and World War II.  …. Read More
