Kidnapped Christian Professor in Nigeria Released, Sources Say
JOS, Nigeria (Morning Star News) – A professor at a Christian university has reportedly been released after being kidnapped in Nigeria, which leads the world in abductions of Christians, sources said.
John Fatokun, professor of computational mathematics and numerical analysis and deputy vice chancellor of Anchor University in Lagos, was released on Wednesday (Jan. 20) after suspected Fulani herdsmen captured him on Monday (Jan. 18) as he travelled from Jos to Nasarawa state.
“Despite the experience, my faith remains unshakable,” Fatokun told reporters today, according to Legit, a Nigerian news outlet. “We will continue to work, pray and raise godly men and women who are destined to change the narratives and make Nigeria a better place for the generations ahead.”
Fatokun did not identify his captors, but Muslim Fulani herdsmen have been active in Nasarawa state.
Anchor University’s assistant registrar and head of strategy and communications, Okesola Sanusi, reportedly said that Fatokun was freed after serious prayers were offered on his behalf. Read more …
Brazilian Church tackling shortage of oxygen for COVID-19 Patients
A bishop in northern Brazil has spoken about the Church’s struggle tackling a fatal oxygen shortage – which has led to more than 50 additional deaths among Amazonas State’s coronavirus patients over the last week.
With Brazil’s COVID-19 deaths exceeding 225,000, the Church has provided logistical and other support in the state, where rivers are the main means of transportation between towns, as there have been problems getting essential supplies such as oxygen to hospitals.
Archbishop Leonardo Steiner of Manaus told Catholic charity Aid to the Church in Need (ACN): “The biggest difficulty is the sheer distances and the problem of access to the hospitals that are equipped for helping the most severely ill.
“Today we were able to send oxygen to a number of towns – this was an enormous help.
“Now we are trying to locate mini production plants for the supply of oxygen, which would resolve a number of problems.”
In Amazonas State’s capital Manaus, difficulties obtaining oxygen have reportedly led to people exhausting life savings or taking out loans to ensure relatives in hospital can receive the precious gas.
ACN was told that in some cases families have paid more than £750 to provide loved ones with an extra three hours of oxygen – which is more than four months’ income for the average household in the region. Read more …
Uganda Pastor and Wife were Attacked after Imam Becomes Christian
Morning Star News reports – Following the conversion of a Muslim imam to Christianity, mosque leaders in eastern Uganda on Dec. 27 incited a group of Muslims to beat a pastor and his wife and demolish parts of their church building, sources said.
Pastor Moses Nabwana’s wife was hospitalized for five days, and the church leader several days more, after a Muslim mob attacked them in Nankodo Sub-County, Kibuku District as they returned home from a late afternoon church service.
The imam, whose name is withheld for security reasons, put his faith in Christ on Dec. 5 and on Dec 27 joined the church worship in Nankodo Sub-County at about 4 p.m., said Lovisa Naura, the pastor’s wife. The new Christian was given the opportunity to share the journey of how he came to faith in Christ.
“The members were overjoyed and made loud shouts and praises to God, which attracted the nearby Muslims to take note, and at 6 p.m. the announcement in the mosque was made of the apostasy of the imam,” Naura told Morning Star News.
Church members arranged to relocate the now-former imam and his wife, who had put her faith in Christ on Dec. 10, at a safehouse until a more permanent location is determined.

The Supreme Court Overturns California’s Ban on physical Church meeting
Christian Headlines report that the U.S. Supreme Court delivered a major religious liberty victory to California churches over the weekend, ending California’s outright ban on indoor worship during the pandemic but allowing the state to limit attendance to 25 percent capacity in some areas.
The justices, in a 6-3 decision in a pair of orders late Friday, issued an injunction against California Gov. Gavin Newsom, prohibiting his administration from enforcing its total ban on indoor worship. The lawsuits were brought by two churches – South Bay United Pentecostal Church and Harvest Rock Church – although the ruling impacts all houses of worship in the state.
Following the orders, Newsom’s office on Saturday revamped its restrictions to limit churches in areas of major outbreaks to 25 percent capacity. Churches in areas with only moderate or minor outbreaks are limited to 50 percent, the Associated Press reported.
Liberty Counsel, which represented Harvest Rock Church, applauded the court’s action. California had had the nation’s “most severe restrictions” on worship, Liberty Counsel said in a statement.
“Finally, Governor Gavin Newsom’s total ban on worship has come to an end,” said Liberty Counsel founder and chairman Mat Staver. “A pandemic is no excuse for violating the Constitution. Until today, California imposed the most severe restrictions on places of worship. Not anymore. We will continue to press this case until religious freedom is totally restored.”
The court’s conservative bloc sided with the churches: Supreme Court Justice John Roberts and Justices Clarence Thomas, Neil Gorsuch, Brett Kavanaugh, Samuel Alito and Amy Coney Barrett.
Roberts, in a concurring opinion, asserted that not allowing anyone to worship in even the “most cavernous cathedral” did not reflect “expertise or discretion” but instead “insufficient appreciation or consideration of the interests at stake.”
The Constitution, he wrote, “entrusts the protection of the people’s rights to the Judiciary.” Read more …
