Religious Freedom – US State Dept list Nigeria as One of the Worst Violators

In a report by The Christian Post , Nigeria is one of ten countries recently added to the US State Department’s list of “countries of particular concern” for religious freedom. It is the first secular democracy to make the list.

Christian Headlines reported that the Secretary of State Mike Pompeo told reporters in a press statement on Monday that the list included governments that have “engaged in or tolerated systematic, ongoing and egregious violations of religious freedom.”

“The United States is designating Burma, China, Eritrea, Iran, Nigeria, the DPRK, Pakistan, Saudi Arabia, Tajikistan, and Turkmenistan as Countries of Particular Concern (CPC) under the International Religious Freedom Act of 1998, as amended, for engaging in or tolerating ‘systematic, ongoing, egregious violations of religious freedom,’” he said.

For over a decade, the U.S. Commission on International Religious Freedom, which is a bipartisan group created by the 1998 International Religious Freedom Act to protect religious liberty around the world, has recommended that the African country of Nigeria make the CPC list.

Rev. Jonnie Moore, who serves on the commission, has heard countless stories of Christians specifically suffering in Nigeria for their faith. “Thousands of churches have been torched; children massacred; pastors beheaded; and homes and fields set ablaze by the tens of thousands, with people being targeted for their Christian faith alone,” he said in a recent interview with Fox News.

Moore co-wrote a book called The Next Jihad: Stop the Christian Genocide in Africa with Rabbi Abraham Cooper on the destruction. Reports of “kidnapping, extortion, burning of churches” are often ignored or mishandled by police, according to the authors. Read more …

Long Ostracized Christian Withstands New Level of Persecution in India

Morning Star News has reported a new persecution in INDIA – Representatives of eight village councils in central India first summoned a new Christian to give him an ultimatum in October.

They interrupted a church service on Oct. 18 asking for Sattar Singh Markam.

“I was conducting the church service when some men came to call Markam and asked him to present himself before the council,” pastor Chitrasen Sahu told Morning Star News. “He went to see them after the church service was over.”

At the joint meeting in Bargaon, in Chhattisgarh state’s Gariaband District, they told Markam to renounce Christ or “leave with your Christian faith and never come back,” Pastor Sahu said.

Markham, who was suffering three epileptic seizures a day before he put his faith in Christ 12 years ago, told them the Lord had healed him and given him life and that he would never turn away from his Christian faith.

A week later, on Oct. 25, a tribal mob of about 300 people incited by radical Hindus attacked his house after his church, which meets there, had finished worship. Two women remained inside, praying, when the mob arrived and began manhandling and arguing with them while Markam was working in his field. The mob also damaged his house.

When he returned, the women left, and the mob began arguing with him.

As they told him to leave Christianity or face the consequences, Markam told them how he was miraculously healed through Christ. They scoffed at him and began slapping and pushing him, he said. Markam fell to the ground, and the mob beat and kicked him.

“They kept asking me, ‘Now tell us, will you leave your Christian faith and come back to your ancestral faith?’” he told Morning Star News. “I replied, ‘If I had not found Christ, I wouldn’t be alive today; I will not leave Christ at any cost.”

‘Attack His Livelihood’

The mob left after beating him, Markam said.

“While they went,” he told Morning Star News, “they told each other, ‘He will not agree like this – let us attack his livelihood, his fields. When we harvest his crops, he won’t be able to sustain his family and survive in the village without food and money. He will automatically leave the village and flee.’ I am so shaken by what I overheard.”

The next day he filed a complaint with the Sobha police station. Officers registered a First Information Report under Indian Penal Code sections for obscene acts, voluntarily causing hurt, criminal intimidation, destruction, damage or defilement of a place of worship and criminal acts done with common intention.

Police have made no arrests, Pastor Sahu said.

Markam and his family have faced opposition for their faith since they became Christians. At a large meeting in a nearby village 11 years ago, they pressured him to leave Christ, deciding to socially boycott him and his family when he refused. He could not speak with, buy from or sell to anyone in the village.

Nor would anyone work for him.

“For 11 years, Markam has cultivated his land by himself with no help,” said Pastor Sahu. “People are afraid to work even as hired hands on his field because of the warnings. He has suffered much for Christ’s sake, but it has not deterred him from his faith.”

Police in Pakistan Find Christian Girl Chained in Kidnapper’s Home

Morning Star News reports – LAHOREPakistan (Morning Star News) – A Catholic family’s five-month search for their 12-year-old daughter who was kidnapped, forcibly converted to Islam and married to a 45-year-old Muslim in Faisalabad, Pakistan, ended on Saturday (Dec. 5) when police found her chained in her abductor’s house, sources said.

The discovery came on the heels of the killing of a young woman in Rawalpindi, allegedly shot dead by her Muslim suitor for refusing to renounce her Christian faith and marry him.

Earlier this year the father of 12-year-old Farah Shaheen reported his daughter was kidnapped on June 25, forcibly converted to Islam and married against her will. Asif Masih said police refused his efforts to register a case against the suspect, Khizar Hayat.

Police finally registered a case against Hayat on Sept. 19, but officers reportedly remained reluctant to arrest him and recover the child. Under pressure from a court and the Punjab Province government, police on Saturday (Dec. 5) recovered the girl and produced her before a judge.

The investigating officer told the court that after a surprise raid on the house, police found Farah chained in a room. Hayat and his suspected accomplices escaped arrest, he claimed.

A police source told Morning Star News that the kidnappers subjected Farah to physical and mental torture.

“The dark marks on her ankles show that she was fettered for most of her time in captivity,” the source said.

The court has handed her to police custody, ordered an ossification test to determine her age and ordered registration of a case against six suspects, including Hayat, he said.

“It severely reprimanded the investigation officer of the case, Sub-Inspector Mehtab, for intentionally misreporting Farah’s age to be 17 in the inquiry report,” the source said.

The girl’s father, a single parent who works as a daily wage laborer, pleaded for custody of his daughter.

“I’m grateful to the government and the court for ensuring my daughter’s recovery, and I hope they will also punish the men who did this cruelty,” he told Morning Star News.

He added that the court should give custody of Farah to her family so that they can comfort the traumatized child.

Although intercourse with a girl below the age of 16 is statutory rape, in most cases a falsified conversion certificate and Islamic marriage certificate influences police to pardon kidnappers.

Twitter has been Criticized for Not Removing Hashtag Calling for the Burning of Priests

Christian Headlines report that Twitter has received heavy criticism after a hashtag calling for the burning of priests in Spain went viral last week. The hashtag violates the social media platforms’ rules prohibiting the promotion of violence.

According to Crux Now, on Tuesday, pro-Marxist groups first issued the hashtag #FuegoAlClero, which means set fire to the clergy, in defense of a new bill – the Celaa Law – that would reform Spain’s education system and give the state control over religious education in public schools.

The viral hashtag included imagery of clergy whose heads are engulfed in flames.

Calls to burn down churches were also spawned from the hashtag.

Education institutions have opposed the Celaa law, named after Spanish minister of education, Isabel Celaa, as it would place the state in control over religious instruction in public schools and restrict support for thousands of Catholic schools, which places them at risk of closure.

Specialist schools serving disabled children also face possible closure as the new law would require the children to be sent to public schools in order to “mainstream” them. But experts and parents of the special needs children.

In opposition to the legislation, Bishops, alongside employees, unions and parents collectively created the platform “Mas Plurales,” in calling for plurality within the Spanish education system. Read more …
