Postcard from Colorado’s Chapel-on-the-Rock – The Christian Post

This Roman Catholic chapel in the mountains of Colorado has arguably the most picturesque of settings.

The St. Catherine of Siena Chapel was built atop a rocky crag in the shadow of Mount Meeker, which at 13,916 feet is the second-highest summit in Rocky Mountain National Park. More commonly called the Chapel-on-the-Rock, it is part of Camp St. Malo, a Roman Catholic retreat in Boulder County.

The chapel’s founder, Monsignor Joseph Bosetti, was inspired by the words of Matthew 16:18 (“Upon this rock I will build my church”). That is the same passage of scripture cited by the Roman church as the biblical basis for its universal authority.

Architect Jacques Benedict, who graduated from the famed École des Beaux-Arts in Paris, designed the cruciform-shaped edifice in a rustic style influenced by Romanesque Revival architecture. It was built between 1934 and 1936 by a local contractor with the help of Italian American craftsmen at a cost of $15,000.

Most remarkably, the chapel has survived floods and fires, including the recent East Troublesome Fire that caused mass evacuations of the surrounding area.

Answering Kids’ Hard Questions During Uncertain Times

It always happens at the least convenient times. Kids ask questions that you just didn’t see coming. One minute they will be telling you about Paw Patrol and the next they will be asking a deep question about the Trinity.

In the days we are now in, our children are overhearing conversations containing deeply divided opinions about the pandemic and politics. Naturally they will have questions.

Their questions could be deep and theological such as, “Where did God come from?” They could be questions you aren’t ready for such as, “Where do babies come from?” or “What does fill-in-the-blank mean?” Kids can ask questions that can shock you, such as, “Is there really a God?” or “How do we know that Jesus was real?” During this season, they may ask pointed questions about political views they have heard from others.

Here are my basic guidelines when answering tough questions:

  1. Don’t panic. When we panic, we communicate that it isn’t safe to ask questions. We want to be the safest place for that child to turn. Take a deep breath and prevent yourself from saying, “Why would you ask that?” or “How could you think that?” or “Why would you be thinking about that?”
  2. Clarify what they are actually asking. Do you remember the show “Everybody Loves Raymond?” One of my favorite episodes was when the daughter asked, “Why are there babies?” The dad flips out and prepares himself to answer, only to find out that she wasn’t even asking what he was…

Initial Reports of Kidnapped Nigerian Pastor’s Release Found Untrue

Initial Reports of Kidnapped Nigerian Pastor’s Release Found Untrue

Nigerian Reverend [Polycarp] Zongo of the Church of Christ in Nations is still being imprisoned in the Islamic State West African Province in Nigeria, despite previous reports they had freed him, The Christian Post reports.

The Khalifah Army, an Islamic Terrorist group in the region, released a proof of life video in October.

The video is in Nigerian, but it was reportedly considered proof to Christians around the world that the pastor was alive. However, it wasn’t proof the pastor was released.

Most of the rumors surrounding the pastor’s release came from the Islamic State West Africa Province themselves, according to Morning Star News.

Morning Star News claims they got news of the pastor’s supposed release from his church, the Church of Christ in Nigeria. The Christian Post reports that Christians around the world celebrated his release.

It is unclear where the rumors started, but Para Mallam, the head of the Nigerian Gideon and Funmi Para-Mallam Peace Foundation stated, “We have been sold fake news. Unfortunately, we fell for it. We believed that maybe there was some truth in this. You can imagine the harrowing pain his wife and children and friends are going through right now. “The source of the rumor would provide a clue as to whether the rumor will be worse for him or better for him.”

Nigeria has been ravaged by war in Boko Haram. The Islamic State West…

Hillsong founding pastor Brian Houston sent out an email to church staff and members of Hillsong East Coast on Wednesday afternoon, announcing the termination of Hillsong NYC’s lead pastor, Carl Lentz.

In a statement, which was sent to The Christian Post by Hillsong, Houston revealed that Lentz’s termination was due to “leadership issues and breaches of trust, plus a recent revelation of moral failures.”

Members of the Hillsong NY staff revealed to CP that they were currently “processing” the news.

“I know this will come as a shock to you, but please know that this action was not taken lightly and was done in the best interests of everyone, including Pastor Carl,” Houston, whose church has locations worldwide, wrote in the email.

“Please understand that it would not be appropriate for us to go into detail about the events that led to this decision. However you can be assured that this decision was made in order to honor God and pastorally care for you, our East Coast family, Pastor Carl and his family.”

Jerry Falwell Jr. Sues Liberty University for Forcing Him to Resign, Damaging His Reputation

Jerry Falwell Jr. Sues Liberty University for Forcing Him to Resign, Damaging His Reputation

Jerry Falwell Jr., the former president and chancellor of Liberty University, has filed a lawsuit against the college.

According to PR Newswire, in a complaint filed in the Commonwealth of Virginia Circuit Court for the City of Lynchburg, Falwell claims that Liberty University, the college founded by his father, Dr. Jerry Falwell, “injured and damaged his reputation” and forced his resignation.

Liberty University has declined comment on the lawsuit.

Falwell Jr. says statements from the school seemed to support the false claims an individual had made against him and seemed to be part of a plan by the Lincoln Project, a political group aimed at keeping Trump from reelection.

The Lincoln Project has denied any part in the allegations.

The complaint also alleges that Liberty University officials accepted the false claims of Falwell without investigation to force his resignation and “to tarnish, minimize, and outright destroy the legacy of the Falwell family and Mr. Falwell’s reputation.”

“Other than God and my family, there is nothing in the world I love more than Liberty University,” Falwell Jr. said in a statement. “I am saddened that University officials, with whom I have shared so much success and enjoyed such positive relationships, jumped to conclusions about the claims made against my character, failed to properly investigate…

Pastor in Nigeria Appeals for Release from Islamist Terrorists

Pastor in Nigeria Appeals for Release from Islamist Terrorists

JOS, Nigeria, October 29, 2020 (Morning Star News) – A church pastor in Nigeria who went missing on Oct. 19 has been captured along with two Christian women by militants of the Islamic State West Africa Province (ISWAP), according to a video released by the terrorist group.

In the video clip uploaded on YouTube today (Oct. 29), the Rev. Polycarp Zongo of the Church of Christ In Nations (COCIN) says the militants captured him and the women as they traveled from Jos, Plateau state to the city of Gombe in the state of the same name.

“On Monday, 19 October 2020, I was traveling to Gombe for a church conference when we encountered the caliphate’s armed men who captured me along the way; and right now I’m with them,” Pastor Zongo says in the Hausa language, appealing to the Plateau state governor, state Sen. I.D. Gyang, the Christian Association of Nigeria (CAN) and COCIN leaders to help secure his release. “They too, captured two Christian women who are also here with me. I’m appealing that you all do all that is possible to secure our release from captivity.”

Pastor Zongo leads the COCIN congregation of Wild Life Park Local Church Council (LCC), in Jos.

ISWAP in 2016 broke off from the rebel terrorist group Boko Haram, which originated in Maiduguri.

On Jan. 20, Boko Haram terrorists executed the Rev. Lawan Andami, district chairman of the Church of the…

Neighbors decorate mother’s home for Halloween in memory of her son: Six steps to the hope we need today

Adobe Stock

Crystal Conover decorates her front yard in Layton, Utah, every Halloween. Life-size skeletons and creepy clowns are on display while zombies climb out of grassy holes.

She does this because Halloween was her son Jayden’s favorite holiday. He was thirteen years old when he was hit by a car while trick-or-treating in 2011 and died. She hands out glow sticks each year to help children light their way in the dark and stay safe from cars.

However, 2020 has been especially difficult for Crystal, with expensive storm damage to her home and the challenges of the pandemic. She told her neighbors that she was not up to decorating this year. So they did the job for her.

They not only decorated Crystal’s home and yard, but they also decked out their homes in memory of Jayden. They told her, “You’ve given a whole new meaning to Halloween—it’s not just about the candy, it’s about keeping kids safe.” One added, “Halloween is an emotional time for Crystal. But what she’s been doing every year is a good thing.”

The full moon will be a “blue moon”

Tomorrow will be a Halloween unlike any other in living memory.

The holiday will be unusual in part because a full moon will be visible across the entire US on Halloween night for the first time since 1944. This will also be a rare “blue moon” (a second full moon in a single month). Parents are looking for safe options for their kids to trick-or-treat and for alternatives during the pandemic.

But when the holiday is over, our larger fears will remain.

A man shouting “Allahu Akbar” killed three people yesterday at a church in Nice, France. A new wave of lockdowns and business closings swept across Germany, France, and other places in Europe this week in response to surging coronavirus infections.

The US reported a record five hundred thousand new cases of COVID-19 in the past week. The virus is now reaching areas previously untouched…

Only 38 Percent of Evangelicals Affirm God’s Sovereignty in Salvation: Survey

Only 38 Percent of Evangelicals Affirm God’s Sovereignty in Salvation: Survey

Nearly 4 in ten American Evangelicals believe that God has already chosen his people for salvation before the world came into existence.

The State of Theology Survey, which was conducted by Lifeway Research in collaboration with Ligonier Ministries, found that 38 percent of evangelicals agree with the following statement: “God chose the people he would save before he created the world.” By contrast, 44 percent disagree with the aforementioned statement.

U.S. adults, however, displayed further disagreement than evangelicals with 50 percent of respondents rejecting God’s plan of salvation while 26 percent were in agreement.

In response to evangelicals, Ligonier Teaching Fellow Dr. Stephen Nichols explained how most Christians today have a difficult time affirming that God is sovereign in salvation, otherwise known as the doctrine of election.

For Christians who do affirm God’s election of His people, Nichols explains that “we cannot live the Christian life without it.”

“But sadly, there are many who do read their Bibles, and they attend evangelical churches, and they call themselves an evangelical, who stumble over this doctrine and outright find it offensive,” he noted. “They cannot envision a God who would violate their free will, and they cannot attribute to God this doctrine, which we would say is a biblical teaching, of divine…

Fulani Herdsmen Kill, Wound Christians in Ambushes in Nigeria

Fulani Herdsmen Kill, Wound Christians in Ambushes in Nigeria

JOS, Nigeria, October 28, 2020 (Morning Star News) – Fulani herdsmen wounded two Christians in north-central Nigeria on Sunday (Oct. 25), a little more than a week after herdsmen in the country’s northeast killed another church member while a Christian woman and pastor were kidnapped, sources said.

Herdsmen shot and wounded the two Christians at Ratsat-Rat Junction in Plateau state’s Vatt village, Barkin Ladi County, at about 6:30 p.m. on Sunday (Oct. 25), said Dalyop Solomon Mwantiri, director of the Emancipation Centre for Crisis Victims in Nigeria (ECCVN), an area resident who spoke with one of the victims, Victor Markus.

“The Fulani herdsmen shot them as they rode on their motorcycle,” Mwantiri said. “Both of them escaped with bullet wounds. Victor Markus was shot on his hand and legs, while Gyang Gwom was also shot on his legs.”

Markus, 20, and Gwom, 30, were treated at Jos University Teaching Hospital, he said.

In northeast Nigeria’s Adamawa state, a group of armed Fulani herdsmen shot David Titus to death on Oct. 17 as was returning to Nega village from nearby Bang village, according to Aslem Nuhu Kyauta, a community leader and a resident of Numan town.

“He was shot and killed on the spot,” Kyauta told Morning Star News by text message. “This happened just a day after another Christian by the name of Kennedy Bitrus, from the same Bang…

Joe Biden Quotes Scripture, Says God Is Calling for Healing, Unity in America

Joe Biden Quotes Scripture, Says God Is Calling for Healing, Unity in America

In a speech at Warm Springs, Georgia on Tuesday, Democratic presidential nominee Joe Biden told a rally of voters that America must become “one nation under God” again, The Christian Post reports.

“I run to unite this nation, to heal this nation. I’ve said that from the beginning. It’s badly necessary,” Biden asserted.

The former Vice President then cited Ecclesiastes 3 as he stressed that God is calling the nation to a time of healing and unity.

“The Bible tells us there’s a time to break down and a time to build up, a time to heal. This is that time. God in history has called us to this moment and to this mission,” he argued.

“With our voices and our votes, [we] must free ourselves from the forces of darkness, from the forces of division and the forces of yesterday, from the forces that pull us apart, hold us down and hold us back.”

He continued, “And if we do so, we’ll once more become one nation under God, indivisible, a nation united, a nation strengthened, a nation healed. That is my goal. That is why I’m running.”

While America continues to deal with the COVID-19 pandemic, racial injustice, political division, and a damaged economy, Biden reiterated that the healing of the nation is possible.

If elected, Biden pledged to be “a president who is not in it for himself but for others, a president who doesn’t divide us but…
