“The Brett Kavanaugh sleaze machine is back”: The power of courageous people in chaotic days

As Judge Amy Coney Barrett prepares for Senate confirmation hearings scheduled to begin on Monday, conservatives are warning that “the Brett Kavanaugh sleaze machine is back.” As an example, they are citing a Washington Post article titled, “Amy Coney Barrett served as a ‘handmaid’ in Christian group People of Praise.”

The group changed the title of “handmaid” to “women leaders” three years ago in light of the dystopian novel, The Handmaid’s Tale. Nonetheless, the Post used that misleading title in its headline and waited until the article’s tenth paragraph to note that “handmaid” was originally adopted by the group “in reference to the biblical description of Mary as ‘the handmaid of the Lord.’”

Christopher Scalia, son of the late Supreme Court Justice Antonin Scalia, tweeted: “It’s no coincidence that people who don’t like originalism are basing their understanding of the word ‘handmaid’ on a novel from the 1980s.” The organization Catholic Vote condemned the story as well: “The Washington Post is suggesting that Judge Barrett’s religious faith should be on trial during her confirmation. Democrats [are] playing with fire.”

Judge Barrett’s upcoming hearings are already so divisive in large part because her influence, if confirmed to the Supreme Court, will be so significant.

Mike Pence’s father ran gas stations

Whatever our position on Judge Barrett’s nomination, it is worth noting that across most of human history, a person with her background would have had few opportunities to achieve such stature.

Barrett grew up in a suburb of New Orleans, the oldest of seven children. Her father worked as an attorney for Shell…

Having the Conversation We All Hate to Have

Restructuring is hard… but the alternative is much harder

I’m convinced that the last 6 months have forced most churches to make more than a decade’s worth of changes. Whether it was building out our online ministry platform, rethinking our ministry priorities, or learning how to do congregational care when we can’t sit across a table from one another, much has changed.

Now, six(ish) months in, we are at a point where it would serve us well to pause, survey our current landscape, and think through what the road ahead looks like for us. While our vision and mission are likely still the same, this is a good time to ask ourselves whether our current ministry structures continue to serve us well in this season. What do I mean by ministry structures? I’m glad you asked. Our ministry structures are those things that enable us to achieve the vision that God has given our congregation. For most churches, this means your budget, facilities, programming, and staffing.

Now is the time to stop and begin to ask yourself, and your team, the hard questions about your ministry structure and begin to evaluate whether your current structure is serving your vision… or forcing your vision to serve it. A few questions that might be helpful for you as you begin your evaluation process:

  • Budget: Based on what you have learned since January, does your current budget prioritize those areas of ministry that will be most important for your church’s vision in the next 6, 12, and 24 months? What areas…

Facebook shuts down Christian ministry’s page with no explanation

Facebook still is the largest social network in the world as of 2018, with 2.2 billion monthly active users. | (Photo: Reuters/Philippe Wojazer)

Facebook has removed the page of Restored Hope Network, a Christian ministry that helps those with unwanted sexual attractions and gender confusion.

While no explanation was given as to why the page was taken down, the ministry believes the social media giant’s move is part of ongoing efforts in support of government prohibitions on the practice of what some refer to as “conversion therapy,” a phrase RHN maintains has been weaponized to shut down any kind of counseling that coheres with the historic Christian faith’s view on sexual ethics.

“It is a deliberately and misleadingly provocative term coined by the LGBTQ activist community that does not describe any type of actual counseling assistance offered to men and women who struggle with same-sex attraction,” explained Anne Paulk, executive director of Restored Hope Network, in a statement sent to The Christian Post on Thursday.

Paul said Facebook’s actions amounted to an example of viewpoint discrimination.

“Facebook is deciding they have the authority to silence the stories of those of us whose…

New Bill Seeks to Designate the Chinese Communist Party as a ‘Transnational Criminal Organization’

New Bill Seeks to Designate the Chinese Communist Party as a ‘Transnational Criminal Organization’

Last Thursday, a new bill was introduced by U.S. Representative Scott Perry (R-PA) titled the “Designating the Chinese Communist Party a Transnational Organized Crime Group Act.”

According to The Christian Post, a press release of the proposed legislation seeks to “add the Chinese Communist Party (CCP) to the Top International Criminal Organizations Target (TICOT) List and provide the United States law enforcement agencies a strategic directive to target the CCP’s malign activity.”

“The CCP is an abject moral failure,” Perry said, as he introduced the bill. “You know this. It is decrepit, it is demonic, it is an institution that subjugates and enslaves the people it has dominion over. In the past hundred years, our world saw the rise of communism in the Soviet Union and we witnessed freedom imperiled by evil. And we’re witnessing it right now today. Right as we stand here, it is happening right now today. But it cannot be allowed to endure.”

Chinese diplomats in the U.S. involved in criminal activity would also be removed from sovereign immunity, according to the bill.

The press release explained that “the CCP’s coordinated and government-directed theft of American intellectual property, cyber-attacks on U.S. systems, espionage, and international fentanyl trafficking, are amongst the top reasons the CCP qualifies to be on the TICOT…

Church Behind Arrested Hymn Singers in Trump Tweet Plans Another Event

Church Behind Arrested Hymn Singers in Trump Tweet Plans Another Event

(RNS) — President Donald Trump tweeted out a warning to his followers Wednesday (Oct. 7), claiming religious liberty in the U.S. was in danger.

“DEMS WANT TO SHUT YOUR CHURCHES DOWN, PERMANENTLY,” he tweeted in all caps. “HOPE YOU SEE WHAT IS HAPPENING. VOTE NOW!”

For proof, the president retweeted a video of an unmasked local politician in Moscow, Idaho, being arrested in late September while a group of people around him sing a hymn.

The video had originally been posted to Twitter by Cliff Maloney, who heads a group called Young Americans for Liberty, according to his profile.

Maloney claimed the video showed Americans being arrested for “holding outdoor church services.”

“This is one of the most heartbreaking things I’ve ever seen. Pray for America,” he wrote.

A clip from arrest at the psalm sing is also used in a video from California megachurch pastor John MacArthur as an example of what he calls “leftists and secular government officials” using “COVID as an excuse to shut us down.”

While a pastor in Florida was arrested in March for holding indoor services despite a coronavirus ban – the charges were later dropped — there’s no sign authorities are arresting church members for holding…

Trump Says Catching COVID-19 was a ‘Blessing from God’ because it Revealed New Treatment Options

Trump Says Catching COVID-19 was a ‘Blessing from God’ because it Revealed New Treatment Options

On Wednesday, President Trump shared his experience with COVID-19 noting that ultimately catching the virus was “a blessing in disguise” because it revealed what he claims is an extremely effective treatment option.

“For me, I walked in, I didn’t feel good, a short 24-hours later; I was feeling great — I wanted to get out of the hospital. And that’s what I want for everybody,” Trump said in a video posted on Twitter. “I want everybody to be given the same treatment as your president, because I feel great. I feel, like, perfect.”

“I think this was a blessing from God that I caught it,” Trump asserted. “This was a blessing in disguise. I caught it, I heard about this drug, I said, ‘let me take it’ … and it was incredible the way it worked,” he added.

President Trump then shared that he is calling for the emergency authorization of one particular experimental drug, Regeneron – which was a part of a cocktail of experimental drugs used to treat him – to be released “soon” and for free to the American public ahead of the vaccine. Trump says he anticipates a vaccine being released after the Presidential election.

“So, hopefully this is going to be not just a therapeutic, it’s going to be much more than a therapeutic. You’re going to get better, you’re going to get better fast just like I did. So, again, a blessing in…

5 Major Takeaways from the Pence-Harris Vice Presidential Debate

The sole vice presidential debate was held Wednesday night, giving Americans a chance to hear from the two candidates who could reside in the White House if the president dies or becomes incapacitated.

With the election less than one month away, it was one of the final times voters were able to hear directly from the campaigns.

Here are five major takeaways:

Kamala Harris and Mike Pence, Harris refused to say whether Bide will add seats to the SCOTUS

1. It was a Huge Improvement from the Presidential Debate

The debate between Republican Mike Pence and Democrat Kamala Harris was similar to most presidential/vice presidential debates in modern times – no name-calling, no shouting, no constant interrupting. No one was called a “clown.” “Shut up” was never muttered. There were points … and counterpoints….

Support Grows for Confirming Amy Coney Barrett: Double-Digit Margin Wants Her on Court

Support Grows for Confirming Amy Coney Barrett: Double-Digit Margin Wants Her on Court

The Senate Republican push to quickly confirm Supreme Court nominee Amy Coney Barrett appears to be gaining support from American voters.

A new Morning Consult/Politico poll, released Wednesday, shows a plurality of registered voters now favor confirming Barrett to the high court, 46-31 percent, with 23 percent saying they don’t know or don’t have an opinion. Support for confirming Barrett increased nine points from one week earlier, when the same question was asked.

The new poll of roughly 2,000 voters was taken after President Trump introduced Barrett Sept. 26 as his choice to replace the late Ruth Bader Ginsburg. It was conducted Oct. 2-4. The earlier poll, which showed voters favoring confirmation by a slim margin of 37-34 percent, was taken Sept. 26.

“Democrats are losing the Supreme Court messaging war,” Morning Consult said in an online analysis.

Republicans (77-7 percent) and independents (36-31 percent) favor confirming Barrett, while Democrats oppose it (only 24 percent of Democrats back confirmation). Support for Barrett’s confirmation has grown by 10 points among Democrats, eight points among independents and six points among Republicans.

The GOP is pushing to confirm Barrett prior to the election. Hearings are scheduled to begin next week.

On a slightly different question, voters also back Barrett’s confirmation even if President Trump loses in…

Olympic Gymnast Said to Be Vladimir Putin’s Lover ‘Vanished After Giving Birth to Twins in Moscow Last Year’ – Urban Christian News

A gymnast rumoured to be Vladimir Putin’s lover cut contact with friends and ‘vanished after giving birth to twins last year’ – but regularly carries out touching gestures for a former team-mate, a pal has revealed.

Alina Kabaeva, a famous 37-year-old Olympic gold medallist, has not been seen in public since 2018 when she was said to be two months pregnant with children thought to be fathered by Putin.

It was reported that Kabaeva gave birth to twin boys by caesarean section in April last year at a Moscow clinic but neither she nor Putin have confirmed this.

Despite her apparent disappearance from the public eye, she has kept up the touching habit of leaving flowers at the grave of the mother of a former teammate, a pal has claimed.

During her heyday in the 2000s, Kabaeva was part of an extremely successful trio of Russian gymnasts, along with Lyasan Utiasheva and Irina Chashchina.

The three friends won multiple medals but are no longer in close contact as Kabaeva and Chashchina prefer to live quietly, Utiasheva told Infox.ru this week.

Kabaeva’s former team mate says that every time she visits her mother’s grave there are flowers with a card saying: ‘With love from Alina’.

Utiasheva said she knows for certain the flowers are from Kabaeva because she doesn’t know anyone else named Alina.

While the pair now see each other only very rarely, Utiasheva said she knows she could call Kabaeva if she ever needed to and doesn’t begrudge her decision to shy away from contact.

‘If a person decides to lead a life that is closed from the eyes of society, this choice…
