John Macarthur, Pastor Who Defied COVID-19 Orders, Will Face New Hearing in November

LOS ANGELES (RNS) — The same state social-distancing measures that have ensnarled Rev. John MacArthur in legal proceedings for his refusal to close his church have now delayed a reckoning for the Sun Valley, California, pastor, as a Los Angeles County Superior Court judge on Thursday (Sept. 24) scheduled a hearing until mid-November.

County officials, in a statement, said the decision was due to the current COVID-19 restrictions.

Los Angeles County representatives requested a hearing for civil contempt against MacArthur, who has continued to hold services at his Grace Community Church despite a ban on large gatherings issued by Gov. Gavin Newsom that includes services in houses of worship.

County officials said the court can’t “adjudicate this issue now because of court rules prohibiting people from being present in the courtroom to combat the spread of the virus.”

Attorneys for MacArthur see the delay as a victory, but county officials say the church “has not been exonerated for its violations.”

“This ruling prevents Los Angeles County’s attempted rush to judgment in its continued prosecution of Pastor John MacArthur and Grace Community Church for courageously exercising their First Amendment rights,” said Charles LiMandri, special counsel for the Thomas More Society, in a statement. The More Society, based in Chicago, is a “national interest,…

What a self-described liberal said about Amy Coney Barrett: Fighting for truth with courageous grace

It’s not often that we get to see history being made, but that’s what happened Saturday afternoon when President Trump nominated Judge Amy Coney Barrett for the Supreme Court of the United States.

Any nomination to our nation’s highest court is historic. If confirmed, Judge Barrett will become only the 115th person in American history to sit on this court and only the fifth woman. Moreover, she will be the first person with school-age children to serve.

But what most concerns opponents of the president’s nomination is another historic fact: she would give the court a six-to-three conservative majority by replacing Justice Ruth Bader Ginsburg, long considered the leader of the liberal faction of the court. This could be crucial with upcoming cases on the Affordable Care Act, abortion restrictions, and perhaps the 2020 presidential election.

Much has already been said in opposition to this outcome. Today, I’d like to explain why this opposition is so heated and what it means for every evangelical in America today.

“A brilliant and conscientious lawyer”

Judge Amy Coney Barrett’s judicial qualifications to serve on the court are beyond dispute. Harvard law professor Noah Feldman, a self-described liberal who is “devastated” over Justice Ginsburg’s death and “revolted by the hypocrisy” of considering the president’s nomination, nonetheless writes: “I want to be extremely clear. Regardless of what you or I may think of the circumstances of this nomination, Barrett is highly qualified to serve on the Supreme Court.”

He explains: “I disagree with much of her judicial philosophy and expect to disagree with many, maybe even most of her future votes and opinions. Yet despite this…

Four Key Attitudes of Leaders Whose Churches Will Thrive in the Future

The topic of COVID or the pandemic often brings feelings of gloom and despair. Indeed, the year 2020 will be, in many ways, a year we will choose to forget. It has been difficult for many people and many organizations.

But during this trying season, I have been devouring news and studies of churches and other organizations that are poised to move positively in the future. These organizations are not succumbing to the inevitability of life getting worse and organizational health deteriorating. They do not have their metaphorical heads in the sand. To the contrary, they are looking up and looking around to see the new paths and the new possibilities in this new reality.

When I recently synthesized many of the articles and podcasts addressing these challenges positively, I saw a pattern. There were four attitudes among the leaders common to most all of them. I believe these four attitudes are emblematic of successful organizations of the near future.

  1. “God is not done with us yet.” To be clear, the leaders of secular organizations were unlikely to articulate this attitude in the same way church leaders were. But all of the healthy organizations had attitudes of hope and possibility. Defeatism was a foreign concept to all of them.
  1. “We are not waiting for things to return to normal.” Any organization waiting for a pre-COVID normal is already in trouble. Any churches expecting patterns of attendance, giving, and ministry to be similar to 2019 are really up against a wall. There…

Thousands of churches across the US to gather for Repentance Sunday

Prayer | Getty/Stock photo

Thousands of churches across the United States will pray for repentance and revival on Sunday in response to calls by the leaders of more than 50 churches and ministries to observe Repentance Sunday as the country is going through “division, destruction and degradation.”

“Inspired by Old Testament calls to sacred assemblies, this special day (September 27) marks the beginning of Yom Kippur, the Day of Atonement, in the historic Church calendar,” say the organizers on the event’s website.

“This is one of the most sacred days of the year for the Jewish community and an opportunity as the Christian church to practice what Revelation 2 and 3 require, a return to our first love, seeking forgiveness of our personal and corporate sins,” explain the organizers, including Matt Chandler from The Village Church in Flower Mound, Texas; Gabe Lyons from Q Ideas in Nashville, Tennessee; John Stonestreet of Colson Center in Colorado Springs; and Francis Chan of Crazy Love Ministries, among others.

During worship services or special evening services on Sunday, churches will pray for repentance “in response to the continued division, destruction and degradation…

In the first episode of her new podcast, Vice President Mike Pence’s daughter Charlotte Pence Bond opened up about her spiritual journey as the daughter of devout Christian parents and how she went through her own born-again experience to realize what it means to live for Christ.

Her new podcast program is called “Doubting It” and aims to be the “start of a conversation” to encourage listeners not to shy away from their spiritual doubts.

“I think that doubt is something that most people experience when they are kind of going through their faith journey or they are figuring out what they believe,” the 27-year-old graduate student at Harvard Divinity School, said.

“It can be common … to have these questions, especially if you are raised in a religious household, in a household where everybody around you might be very devoutly religious. That can be kind of intimidating because when you get out into the real world, it can be a little different and look a little different.”

Bond, who got married last December, spoke about how she grew up as a middle child in the home of Mike and Karen Pence, whom she said both grew up Catholic but have since become nondenominational Protestants.

Today, Bond is in the second year of a master’s program in theological studies. During her studies, she said, she has noticed a…

Pope Francis Accepts Resignation of Cardinal Named in Vatican Financial Scandals

Pope Francis Accepts Resignation of Cardinal Named in Vatican Financial Scandals

VATICAN CITY (RNS) — Pope Francis accepted the resignation of high ranking-prelate Cardinal Angelo Becciu from his role as the head of the Vatican’s Congregation for the Causes of Saints, along with the rights of Becciu’s cardinal’s title, on Thursday (Sept. 24).

The Vatican informed journalists with a statement late on Thursday, providing no further details.

The cardinal, formerly a right-hand man of Emeritus Pope Benedict XVI, was made secretary of state by Benedict in 2013 and held the position until 2017, when Pope Francis moved him to his more marginal job in the department that oversees the progress of candidacies for sainthood.

Becciu is the third cardinal in recent memory to lose the privileges of the red hat, which include the right to attend the conclave that elects the pope. Known sexual predators Theodore McCarrick and Keith O’Brien were also prohibited from exercising their role as cardinals.

“I prefer silence,” Becciu said with a “broken voice,” speaking to local news outlet Il Messaggero after news of his resignation became public.

Known as an astute diplomat and an avid gun collector, Becciu has recently seen his name mentioned in connection with an array of scandals concerning the Vatican’s financial dealings. In 2019, the Institute for Religious Works, also known as the Vatican bank, flagged suspicious activities at the Secretariat of State…

Helicopters, armed police swoop in to arrest Russian cult leader who calls himself Jesus reincarnated – Urban Christian News

A former traffic police officer who has declared himself Jesus reincarnated has been arrested by Russian authorities in a special operation deep in Siberia.

Helicopters and armed officers were used to infiltrate the communities run by Sergei Torop, 59, who is more commonly known by his cult name “Vissarion.” He and two aides – Vladimir Vedernikov and Torop’s right-hand-man Vadim Redkin, a former drummer in a Soviet-era boy band – were arrested in the operation run by agents from Russia’s FSB security services, as well as police and other agencies. All three were led to waiting helicopters by masked police.

Torop has been running his cult, the Church of the Last Testament, deep in the wilderness of Siberia since 1991. As the Soviet Union collapsed, and after the loss of his job in 1998, he claims to have experienced an “awakening” in which he adopted the persona of Jesus.

“I am not God. And it is a mistake to see Jesus as God. But I am the living word of God the father. Everything that God wants to say, he says through me,” he told UK newspaper The Guardian in 2002.

Churches Hit Home Run with Services in Ballparks, Stadiums as COVID-19 Cancels Sports

Churches Hit Home Run with Services in Ballparks, Stadiums as COVID-19 Cancels Sports

SOUTH BEND, Ind. (RNS) — It was sunny and 73 degrees, the perfect day for a baseball game.

But that’s not why the crowd filled the stands Sunday (Sept. 20) at Four Winds Field in South Bend, Indiana, home of the South Bend Cubs.

They were there for a church service, complete with worship leaders on the third-base line and Scriptures on the Jumbotron.

South Bend City Church — a 4-year-old church that draws on a number of Christian traditions for its music, messages and mantras — has been meeting at the minor league ballpark since the novel coronavirus pandemic threw a curveball into large gatherings like worship services.

“In March, we shut down gatherings pretty quickly, and we’re really, really grateful to work with the Cubs to have a place that’s safe and spread out and be outdoors,” said Jason Miller, lead pastor of South Bend City Church.

Amid stay-at-home orders and social distancing guidelines, churches across the country have found creative ways to touch base with their members this year.

Many churches have moved online. But, Miller said, it’s not the same when Christianity “is inherently communal.”

“Digital is great. It’s a wonderful tool. But I think we all know the difference between Zooming your parents and hugging them at Thanksgiving,” he said.

Those churches that have continued to meet in person in their buildings have done so with…
