Teenage Christian cousins kidnapped at gunpoint outside their house

On 16th August 2021 two teenage Christian cousins from Warburton, District Nankana Sahib were kidnapped at gunpoint outside their house by local Muslim men.

According to Mumtaz Bibi, the mother of Simran and aunt of Sheeza, on 11 August she went to attend the funeral one of their relatives in Faisalabad with another family member, but she left her daughter Simran, aged 15-16, her son Anoos and her brother, Ghafoor Masih’s daughter Sheeza, 15, to stay together and look after Anoos, who is disabled.

But when she returned Simran and Sheeza were not at home. Crying, Anoos told her the girls had been kidnapped by two Muslim men, Ali Raza and Lali Iqbal, at gunpoint outside their house.

Anoos told his mother that around 4PM Simran went to the shop to buy some food but Ali Raza and Lali who were present outside their house dragged Simran and forcefully pushed her into a rikshaw parked nearby. Simran started shouting and called for help. Sheeza went to help her, but she was also attacked. She started crying too and in the meantime Anoos came out and when he saw that both girls were struggling against Ali and Lali who were pushing them into the rickshaw, he started shouting for help to save his sister.

Their neighbour Sahil and some people gathered around and tried to rescue the girls but Ali and Lali pointed their guns toward them and threatened to kill them if anyone interfered and tried to stop them.

Mumtaz further said in her statement the family tried to search for the girls but couldn’t find them. They went to the kidnapper’s houses, but their houses were locked and there was nobody there.

A local resident, Nadeem, said that he saw Ali and Lali in the Warburton area about 5 PM.

The Police has registered a case against Ali Raza, Lali Iqbal, Sabira Bibi, Sarang Chanan, Gongloo Sumendar and some other people who are believed to be involved by the victims’ families. Until now nobody has been arrested but the family is fearful about the girls wellbeing as several days have passed and they don’t know whether the girls are alive or not. They have heard horrible stories about such cases but hope their daughters will return home safely.

Nasir Saeed, Director CLAAS-UK has expressed his concern over the ongoing situation, saying the kidnapping, forced conversion and forced marriage of teenage Christian and Hindu girls has become an everyday matter.

He said: “Parents of young Hindu and Christian girls are fearful of their future in Pakistan.

“In this year alone we have recorded over two dozen cases, and the majority of cases are of Christian girls from Punjab.”

He further said that it is frustrating as the government and law enforcement agencies – those with power – are aware of the situation but turn a blind eye.

Mr Saeed said: “Forced conversion of religious minorities primarily in girls, some younger than 12 years old, seems to have become a norm not only for the Pakistani government but for the community as well. Hardly any member of society admits to seeing the severity of the problem at hand.

He added that comments made by Minister for Religious Affairs Noorul Haq Qadri that there should be no restrictions on converting religion before the age of 18, saying that if someone aged 14wished to convert to some other religion, they could “not be stopped”, were very disappointing.

Qadri said in the Islamic faith, anyone could convert to the religion regardless of age. He said “There are several incidents where someone expresses the wish to convert their religion out of their own choice before the age of 18. There are several examples in Islam of religious conversion before 18”.

Mr Saeed further said that the Islam-influenced judiciary system has also become a safety net for paedophiles and rapists who take advantage of the Islamic faith’s inherent good deeds to justify their criminal minds.

Mr Saeed said forced conversion and forced marriages are serious crimes and the government must pay attention and introduce new legislation to stop this growing problem.

Doctor in Kabul, cries out: ‘Please help get people out of Afghanistan!’

Vatican News report – A doctor in the Afghan capital of Kabul, who wishes to remain anonymous, describes the situation in Afghanistan, and urges the international community to help get people out of the country.

Evacuations from Afghanistan are gathering pace, with more than 2,200 diplomats and other civilians flown out of the country as of Wednesday, according to a Western security official cited by Reuters news agency.

Civilian flights have been halted, but foreign governments are working quickly to get their citizens and Afghans who worked with them out of Kabul after the country fell to the Taliban over the weekend.

The Taliban, meanwhile, is promising to respect the rights of women “within the framework of Islamic law”, according to the group’s spokesman at a press conference on Tuesday.

Reports from the ground indicate that local Afghans are unsure of their prospects for a bright future.

Uncertain future in Afghanistan

One medical doctor in Kabul, speaking anonymously to Vatican News, said local lives are at risk, adding that most people are being prevented from leaving Afghanistan.

He cited news reports as proof that foreign governments understand what the future holds under Taliban rule, as they seek to evacuate their citizens and Afghans who worked with them. “It means there is a lot of pressure on them,” he noted.

“Thousands of people are waiting in front of the airport without passports or visas,” he said. “They are taking them out of Kabul and all of Afghanistan.”

Britain has announced plans to settle up to 5,000 Afghans within a year, most of whom will be women, girls, and religious minorities. Around 20,000 Afghans will be welcomed to the UK over the coming years.

Germany says it is considering evacuating up to 10,000 people, including Afghan support staff and human rights activists.

Plea for help to flee

The Kabul doctor also expressed doubt about his future prospects.

“I think it will be worse for me,” he said. “There is a lot of pressure on me, my family, and everyone here.”

He said he hopes to flee Afghanistan, and has asked colleagues for help doing so.

When asked what he wants to tell the world, there is no hesitation in his voice.

“Please support us!” he said. “I think the world knows what the future holds for us. You have to help people get out of here!” Read more …

Hobby Lobby Fined $220,000 for Prohibiting Transgender Employee From Using Women’s Restroom

Meggan Sommerville, who was born male and began transitioning genders in 2007, has been fighting to use the ladies’ restroom for over 10 years at Sommerville’s place of employment, Hobby Lobby. Sommerville has been a Hobby Lobby employee since 1998. Sommerville filed a complaint in 2013 after being disciplined by the company for using the women’s restroom.

Sommerville’s battle came to an end last week when a three-judge Illinois Second District Appellate Court unanimously ruled that Sommerville’s sex is “unquestionably female,” and found the Christian-owned company to be guilty of discriminating against Sommerville’s gender identity.

The amount awarded to Sommerville will go toward attorney fees and emotional distress, according to the Illinois Second District Appellate Court. In statements describing the impact of the retailer’s restrictions, Sommerville cited nightmares about restrooms and said Hobby Lobby’s restrictions resulted in Sommerville taking in less fluid on the job, which led to health issues.

Despite Hobby Lobby installing a unisex restroom to remedy the situation, Sommerville said, “Every time you go to the bathroom, sometimes it’s four or five times a day, I have to use the unisex bathroom.” Sommerville said if someone else is using the single restroom, “I wait, but I don’t want to feel like a creeper and be waiting outside the bathroom. All the bathrooms are at the front of the store. So, I walk back to my shop at the back of the store and wait until I have another opportunity, and then go back up and hopefully somebody is not there.” The court said that the women’s restroom should be available for Sommerville’s use regardless of Hobby Lobby’s unisex restroom.

The historic decision will have national implications, Sommerville’s attorney Jacob Meister said. “This decision will have national implications and start the process of courts around the country addressing the issue of bathroom access.”

The court shut down Hobby Lobby’s argument that it was protecting women with the restriction. The company’s argument alluded to men posing as women to sexually assault, secretly photograph, and otherwise victimize females in the ladies’ restroom.

“There is simply no evidence that Sommerville’s use of the women’s bathroom would pose a safety risk to other women,” a Forbes report stated. “The presence of a transgender person in a bathroom poses no greater inherent risk to privacy or safety than that posed by anyone else who uses the bathroom.”

It is unknown at this time whether Hobby Lobby will appeal the decision.

Hobby Lobby Is a Privately Owned Christian Company

Founded in 1970 by David and Barbara Green, Hobby Lobby has more than 900 stores in 47 states across America. The arts-and-craft giant employs over 43,000 people and posts on its website that it is committed to Biblical principals.

The company’s commitments include: “Honoring the Lord in all we do by operating the company in a manner consistent with Biblical principles.” Hobby Lobby says it shares the “Lord’s blessings” with its employees.

Similar to the Christian-owned fast food restaurant Chick-fil-A, all Hobby Lobby stores are also closed on Sundays to allow employees to spend time worshipping and resting with family.

Hobby Lobby Owners Founded the Museum of the Bible

The Green family purchased a 1923 building near the National Mall in Washington, D.C., in 2012 which is today known as the Museum of the Bible. The museum is a vision brought to life by the Green family and others. It opened in 2017, showcasing historical biblical artifacts in hope of transforming all who experience it with the power of the Bible.

The success of the Green’s Hobby Lobby stores enables their ministry of sharing the Word of God with others. “God’s given us the ability to be very successful in our business, and I think to some degree it’s providential,” David Green’s son, Steve, said. “We want to share this book with people all over the world. And the more resources we have, the more we’re able to do that.” Read more …

Mother Beaten Unconscious for Leaving Islam, Marrying Christian

Morning Star News reports – A mother of four children in eastern Uganda remains in pain after her Muslim father beat her and forced her to take mosquito repellant when he learned that she had left Islam and her Muslim husband and married a Christian, sources said.

When Hajira Namusobya, 34, visited her family in Pallisa on July 31, she was unaware that her family had learned that she had divorced the Muslim who had abused her so severely that she attempted suicide, she said. Her ex-husband in Kawangasi village, Butebo District had nearly killed her with torture, besides beating her weekly, she said.

“I tried to commit suicide by hanging myself with a rope, but I failed because my furious husband was following and monitoring my actions,” Namusobya said.

She had requested her father pay back the bride price that her Muslim husband had paid him, but he refused, she said. As the abuse intensified, Namusobya last year met a Christian woman in Nakaloke village, Mbale District, who urged her to pray to Christ for help.

Later the woman, an evangelist unnamed for security reasons who preaches at her church, led Namusobya to put her faith in Christ on Feb. 2, 2020. She kept her faith secret and decided to divorce her husband the following month, though he insisted on custody of their children, now ages 13, 11, 9 and 6, which deeply pained her, she said.

Her father, Al-haji Shafiki Pande, a Haji or Muslim who has traveled to Mecca for the Hajj, after dinner called for a family meeting and asked her about her new husband, she said.

“I told him everything, how I left the furious husband who almost took away my life and got married to a Christian man who is friendly and treats me as a wife,” Namusobya told Morning Star News. “My dad in a loud voice replied that that is impossible and it’s blasphemous to leave a Muslim for a Christian man, saying, ‘More so, you are a daughter of a Haji.”

He told her to return to her ex-husband in the morning and renounce Christianity, but she refused, Namusobya said.

“He slapped me and brought out his secret stick and Doom mosquito repellant and beat me badly, then forced me to take mosquito Doom,” she said. “It was too terrible.”

Her cries brought a neighbor, a former area chairman who is a moderate Muslim, to her rescue, and he took her to a nearby hospital, she said. Unconscious for three days, she later learned that the neighbor had threatened to press murder charges against her father.

Beth Moore Calls Out Unvaccinated, Unmasked Christians

Bestselling Christian author Beth Moore‘s tweet calling out Christians who politicize the COVID-19  virus has gone viral and received many reactions, including from outspoken pastor Greg Locke and “Let Us Worship” leader Sean Feucht.

Moore’s tweet began with: “If we are in Christ, it is unconscionable for us to in any way politicize this virus. What on earth are we doing???”

“Our sides are not more important than lives,” Moore wrote, adding that Jesus calls Christians to “serve sacrificially.” Her frustration evident, Moore added: “For the love of God, we gotta love our neighbors. Even our enemies!”

The Living Proof Ministries’ Bible teacher made it clear she wasn’t talking to non-Christians. “For all our Jesus-talk, where on the ever-loving earth is our Jesus-walk?” she asked.  “Jesus wasn’t playing when He called us to a whole different ethic from the world. We’re not loud-mouth boasters. We’re servants. We SERVE.”

Moore equated unvaccinated, anti-mask Christians to saying, “My rights are more important than your life. Sorry, not sorry.” The former Southern Baptist wrote in all capital letters (which is widely understood to be yelling): “For the love of God, PUT ON A MASK IN PUBLIC PLACES WITH VULNERABLE PEOPLE.”

“Go ahead & unfollow me. I don’t care,” Moore told people who were offended by what she tweeted. Then she closed the tweet with: “FOLLOW JESUS.”

The next day, Moore expressed to her followers that she was all “worked up,” and said she cares about people. “As I live and breathe, it’s that I care and don’t want people to get sick and many die and leave loved ones devastated. I want to do right by people, protect people where possible, in Jesus’ name. Lord have mercy. Christ have mercy. Lord have mercy.”

US Bishops award $1.36 million to Catholic Church in Africa

The US Conference of Catholic Bishops’ (USCCB) Subcommittee on the Church in Africa will allocate more than $1.36 million for African Bishops’ conferences, regional associations of Bishops’ conferences, and regional associations of religious congregations this Summer.

Funding comes from the special collection taken each year by dioceses in parishes across the United States.

Supporting pastoral care and social ministry in Africa

The sum will help support pastoral care, leadership development, evangelization, and social ministry activities on the African continent, where the Catholic Church remains a beacon of hope in a context of persistent conflict, growing poverty amidst the Covid-19 pandemic and drought.

The USCCB Subcommittee approved grants for 56 pastoral projects at its meeting on June 14.

56 projects

Projects include, amongst others: popularizing and implementing Pope Francis’s environmental encyclical, Laudato si’ in Zambia; training pastoral counsellors to support those impacted by the Covid-19 crisis in Zimbabwe; promoting evangelization in local languages in Togo; creating a men’s ministry modelled on the example of St. Joseph in Malawi; reinforcing the local Church’s capacities for protecting minors and vulnerable adults from sexual abuse across all the dioceses in Burundi; building the skills of catechists in Cameroon to address the psycho-social needs of internally displaced persons who have fled their homes to escape violence; and, organizing interfaith support for the pastoral care of refugees in Uganda.

Making a difference with small gifts

Cardinal Joseph W. Tobin, chairman of the USCCB’s Subcommittee on the Church in Africa, thanked the many Catholics in the United States who contributed to the Solidarity Fund in 2020, despite their own personal hardships resulting from the pandemic.

“These gifts,” he said, “will work wonders in the lives of African Catholics, who are eager to share the Gospel, care for their brothers and sisters, and raise up a new generation of Catholic leaders who will work for a more just and faithful society.” Read more …
